Can someone post a similar chart showing what kind of framerates I can get with the r9 cards? I'm trying to decide whether $159 for a 4gb r9 380 is a decent improvement over an a10's r7, as the only modern game I'm into is gta v

You're running off the iGPU? Anything over 100 will be an upgrade, a 380 can handle 1440p gaming pretty well
>>
>>51564015
I'm a pretty big Nvidia fan but I am thinking about going with AMD this gen. The 390X seems pretty decent despite how expensive it is. If I Can find one for around $350 I will give it a try and return it if it has problems or runs to hot/uses to much power.

If you are using 4k the 390X is pretty close to a 980(non ti).

I used to really like CUDA in the days of the 480 and actually have a 3D Vision kit. They haven't really supported 3D that much in any games lately so all I really use it for is making testing 3D renders and viewing 3D images. I will probably get a VR headset or something for that next year though.

currently the 970 is cheaper ($200 on b-stock) and is 30% faster than a 380x at reference clocks. the majority of 970s can clock to ~1500mhz boost which puts it on par with a stock 980/390x.
>>
>>51564581
Relative performance aka amd shilling charts don't reflect real-life performance as nvidia cums in the gaming world's wallets, and we nvidia customers get to see the advantages of this on our monitors. A 970 handles gta v maxed (well almost maxed as truly maxed even cripples 980tis, with aa stuff lowered) around 70 fps.

The 390X is more powerful. That VTX3D model uses the same cooler and PCB as the PowerColor and Club3D cards, just with a different shroud. It's one of the better options, behind the MSI and Sapphire cards.

If you can't be convinced by the 2 years the 290x has been out and how its performance sits now then you might just be infected by Nvidiaitis. The only known cure is a .44 aspirin i'm afraid.

>>
>>51575509

Dayum, look at that 960 go.

I know what you're saying, but more than once have I heard and seen AMD cards have issues with new games. Whether it's because of delayed driver support or nvidia being part of game development and giving their cards more favorable performance on those games. The only question is, do those snags become a non factor after a few driver updates?

I'd be lying if I said the 390x didn't look really tempting right now.
>>
>>51575798

Just wait for Pascal m8.

AMD just doesn't worth it.
Most of the games are Nvidia optimized and that'l all that it matters at the end.

>>
>>51575798

>become a non factor after a few driver updates?

Pretty much.

Let us also not forget nvidia's drivers in the last 6 months or so have been rather unreliable - the release win10 drivers flatout imploded with the OS, oen driver a few weeks later was bricking laptop displays and there has been a general trend of isntability recently. These are things /g/ tends to ignore as it prevent shitposting saying AMD drivers are somehow bad.

My 290x sure is humming along nicely - especially given when I bought it its competition was the 780, now it fights a 980.

Without memes, I can wholeheartedly recommend the 970 as a better deal for the money right now, after the price cut. The 390x was great up until they announced the price cut a few days ago. Now I'd no longer recommend it because at that point, it's better to just save up and get a 980 ti.

I recommend the MSI 970 as it's more silent and does some great overclock if you're into that.
>>
>>51572353

>>
>>51576051
Can a 650 PSU handle a 390X?
>>
>>51576080

If the temps stay good yes - keep an eye on vrm1 as that gets hot when you start adding voltage. If you have the tri-x new edition it has the same pcb (sand vapor chamber) as the vapor-x and generally has better pwoer delivery.

>>51576116

A good quality one will.

And certain settings in the options other than that too
>>
>>51576292

The box will say so. Plus (iirc) it will have 2x8pin power connectors.

>>51576337

Its an enormous vram hog on very high that just kills performance on every gpu in existence. Probably caching what it can and not flushing memory when needed.
>>
>>51576094

That's not so bad, I have plenty of backlog to go through. Sometimes I even wonder why I should be so hard pressed to upgrade when there are only a handful of new games that appeal to me. I don't even buy games new, I get them like 2 years later when they're a bargain on Steam, Humble Bundle, or GOG.

Just to show how behind I am, I'm just now going through Fallout NV.

Fug, mine is 8+6.
>>
>>51564581

>>
>>51576915

>Fug

Hardly - the reference pcb is built to take one hell of a pounding and ask for more. I slapped custom cooling on my tri-x as I got into heavy overclocking and my card wants staggering amounts of voltage, but the tri-x cooler is capable of handling respectable overclocks depending on the voltage your card wants.

>>51577015

It is some retarded formatting by techpowerup.
>>
>>51577043
Neat, I guess I'll have to try it. Are aftermarket coolers much better than the Tri-X cooler? My only complaint is that it could be a bit quieter.
>>

The tri-x cooler is generally seen as the 2nd or 3rd best cooler on the 200 series hawaii cards. When I last used it the fans never spun above 40% at stock and was silent.

Going aftermarket means going bigger, I did pic related and this behemoth at stock won't run over 50c with fans set to 7v (which are inaudible). I do need to crank them to 12v for overclocking as due to the eye-watering voltage my card wants for 1200mhz core clock I need some montrous cooling to handle 350w+

Sure, let me know when someone mounts a noctua nh-d15 to his GPU.
>>
>>51578083

The D15 won't do it as its "only" rated for a TDP of about 200w. Nearly all high end gpus today are over that.

I originally planned on using 2 NF-A15 spares on the gigabyte cooler but these are just too big for the heatsink.

What you don't realise is i'm putting nearly 1.4v through the card. At stock and fans at 7v the card runs seriously cool. Plus consider its sharing a case with a 9590 that is air cooled.
>>
>>51578321
It's just that I expected more from a 5 slots cooler. But yeah, I thought 1200Mhz was average for a 290X OC but it looks like that's quite high.

1200mhz is more or less the upper limit on what can be air cooled unless you have a chip that doesn't need much voltage - my card does.

I was looking at the XFX version. the tri-x is only $30 more though if its worth it.
>>
>>51579317

XFX cards are generally for being silent and running at stock speeds. The tri-x cooler is built to handle some overclocking.

As ever though, do your own research.
