I have a desktop and an i7-4700 12GB laptop with a GT860M.
It runs everything at perfectly incl 4x VMs simultaneously, but the thing is when a class expects you to do that kind of thing, you're going to be sitting in a computer lab the entire quarter anyway, so having a powerful laptop isn't even necessary.

Plus at 5.5lbs it's a pain in the shoulder once you start carrying it everywhere.

If I had to choose again I would've gone with a ASUS T100 or a chromebook that I can toss in my bag and not notice for the non technical courses.

would you bother with even having a desktop, though?

Is it really a good idea to just go with a chromebook? What do you need a desktop for when your uni will have loads of computer labs that you're paying for access to with ALL of the software on them anyway?
>>
Very few people take notes on laptops or tablets.

98%of the class just prints out powerpoint outlines and writes on them

1% uses laptops

1% are dindus that don't do anything in class
>>
>>51551244
....so why would you need a desktop...?

i'm starting to get the feeling that you really don't even need a personal computer for uni. those guys that would tell me to just buy a tablet are making more sense. maybe they actually know some shit.
>>
I have a Macbook Air (it was a present, I was considering switching to a Surface or Chromebook) and powerful desktop.

>98% of the class just prints out powerpoint outlines and writes on them

Holy shit this so much. Baffles my mind that students copy down the actual power point slide the professor is teaching off of instead of just printing it out, listening to and deciphering the lecture, and writing down even more important information that the teacher stresses. Absolute gigantic waste of time to not print shit out. Definitely worth the 10 cents or whatever you pay for printing.
>>
This thread is basically teaching me that I should just not bother with buying some nice laptop, to buy the cheapest thing possible, and always print out slides to write on
>>
>>51552240
Yeah, don't take your laptop to a lecture, unless the professor requires it.
Best way to get it stolen.
>>
Chromebooks are not worth it.
An ultrabook/2in1 is probably your best option.
When I was studying I made the mistake of buying a large laptop because "I want to be able to type comfortably and lay out my windows.
But then I remembered I needed to take public transport and carry that thing to every fucking class.

A used Thinkpad with an SSD thrown in. X220 or T420 if just doing basic school work, a W520 with a 1080p screen if you need to do more intense work like CAD. If you want to game on your laptop, be prepared to dump a shitton money on something like a Sager or Clevo, and realize that you're spending 4-10 times as much as you would on the Thinkpad.
>>
>>51552311
You sound pretty sheltered, so here's a piece of advice:
Niggers will steal anything that isn't bolted down. Colleges are prime targets, because most kids there are naive as hell.
>>
>>51552401
Man, I seriously don't want to live in your country in some guy can steal a fucking computer in front of a whole class during a lecture, and get away with it.
>>
>>51552440
It usually happens outside of class
Say you put your laptop in your backpack, they might unzip it and get your laptop while you're still wearing the damn thing. They'll work in teams too; one to misdirect your attention, while the other gets your stuff...so in a sense, it is a lot like performing magic.

My university has pc labs full of aged computers that are always being used, a shitty IT department that can't run the network properly, and patchy WiFi. I'm doing an engineering degree so I need to be able to run various simulations.

So the only option was a somewhat powerful laptop. It can get pretty heavy but running simulations remotely over this crappy internet would be a nightmare.

That said I can see the case for a desktop and a book for on the go, and will probably do that once I graduate.
>>

Just get a midrange laptop + midrange desktop.
Ultrabooks can be had cheap enough like the Asus UX305

You have the portability of a laptop that doesn't weigh as much as a brick, yet still powerful to work on and battery lasts a while and then a desktop to game and whatever on.

Desktop for work. Tablet for relaxing on the bed. There's no reason why you would ever need a laptop for university. If you do find yourself needing one for some reason, buy some $100 piece of shit that's barely good enough to get through what you need to use it for.

Re-entering the notes once I get home just seems like extra busy work though, I'm sure I'd want a digital copy. And I'd need some sort of chem software or a wacom-style tablet.

I'm not concerned about being distracted, I'm one of those boring nerds who enjoys doing school work. I'm just not sure if it's worth getting a Surface 4 over a Pro 3 or one of the other 'hybrids' on the market. I'm pretty set on having a tablet laptop I can write on.

Does Android run Onenote or something comparable? Do you miss having a desktop-equivalent OS? I've been hesitant to look into Android based tablets (or an ipad lmao) because I don't want a separate laptop/tablet. The device would need to be a 'laptop replacement' that I use exclusively on the go.
>>
>>51553846
Yep, I've got OneNote on it and my phone.
If you want a laptop replacement, you might look into a tablet with a removable keyboard, since the screen keyboard sucks for typing more than a few sentences... I do like the Wacom pen though.
You could always get a keyboard cover or even a little bluetooth keyboard.

fuck the university. it's not like they have any actual way of figuring it out anyway. it's just a bluff so morons don't just start walking in with guns they have no idea how to operate and accidentally let it go off in their pocket or have no trigger discipline or some shit. there are lots of guys that CC on campus. nobody that CCs all of the time is going to drive back home just to put their CCW in their safe or whatever just because the fucking uni doesn't want them to carry it. what a fucking wank. when your uni gets shot up and the robot is coming into your lecture hall with 600 students in it, these faggots will be happy that I'm there to shoot him before he hurts anyone else.
