I had zero idea so many people were autistic about this topic until earlier this year when one of my friends dropped buckets of spaghetti trying to tell me I was wrong for pronouncing it "jif".
I never looked up how people pronounced it, what the original pronunciation was, etc. I just thought it was "jif", like G in George Washington.
The funny part is there are so many people that insist it ABSOLUTELY HAS TO BE "G" as in "gift" and they pronounce "jpeg" like normal as opposed to "jfeg" (joint photographic experts group).
Why not just have it be both? I don't understand why it can't just be either or. We clearly understand what each other mean when we pronounce it either way. It honestly seems like to me people who absolutely have to have it their way (normally people who pronounce it with a soft g) are on the spectrum somewhere.

Sometimes g is pronounced j before I or e, sometimes it isn't. Generally in Romantic loanwords is it pronounced soft, otherwise it is pronounced hard. Since gif fits in neither of these and the words that make up an acronym sometimes have no effect on its pronunciation (see scuba and laser), it doesn't matter how it's pronounced
