Just look up any review, the fastest M.2 are only a couple seconds faster to boot than the average SATA3 SSD. Same goes for launching programs. or just doing most shit really.

An SSD like the 950 Pro or Intel 750 is only going to flex it's muscle when doing heavy workloads like editing multiple 4K video streams.

I have the 512GB one. It's nothing special apart from benchmarks except in one key usage - scratch disk.
This thing will put 850 PROs in RAID 0 to shame. If this thing was 1TB, I'd probably be able to edit longer 4K videos, but for now I'm resigned to using this and an older SM951 512GB.

For consumer use, top jej this thing will shave a measly second or two off of your boot time. Games will not load any quicker than an 850 EVO or Vertex 180 (which I am currently using as a dedicated Steam library drive).
And they run hot as shit.
I see temps hovering near my CPU's load temps at 60 degrees or more depending on how large of a video I'm trying to edit. The SM951 is known to cut its write speed once it hits a thermal limit, one that you'll easily reach underneath a GTX 980 Ti with no air flow around it. I haven't seen any sort of thermal limiting on the 950, so I can only assume this thermal throttling was addressed. But it still runs as hot as the SM951 since it's also hidden under a GTX 980 Ti.

I think I'll just buy a regular ATX board with more PCI Express 3.0 slots to attach them to Addonics adapter cards so I can put heat sinks on the NANDs. But doing so will void the warranties on the 950 (the SM951 has no warranties, FYI). At least they won't be toasting themselves to an early death.
>>
>>51509185
>I "had" to get one, because I'm out of SATA ports
WEW LAD
Your board will need to shut down some SATA ports just to get that thing running on native M.2 ports. I hope you bought a PCIe adapter card.
>>
>>51512342
The fuck are you talking about? It uses PCIe.
>>
>>51512523
Check your motherboard's specs
I have an ASRock Z170 board with three M.2 slots... And they take up TWO SATA3 ports each. Even though they're all PCIe 3.0 4x M.2 drives on them.
It's a damn good thing they have 4 additional SATA3 ports and enough PCIe slots for a miniSAS card, otherwise I'd be up shit creek without a paddle for hard drive expansion.
>>
>>51507861
Why would I buy this thing that overheats instead of getting the Intel 750 NVME or waiting for 3DXpoint?
>>
>>51512572
That's more M.2 slots than the average motherboard. Most motherboards don't need to use the extra lanes for SATA. It has enough not to bottleneck your GPU and support M.2. on Z170.
>>
>>51508600
Newegg is a scam
>>
>>51512623
I know Gigabyte disables at least one SATA port if you plug in a PCIe M.2 into its slot. I'm not 100% about MSI, but I imagine it's the same. Most M.2 controllers come from the same maker (ASMedia, I think), so they often operate with the same limitation. Using an M.2 slot almost always costs you SATA/SATA Express ports or PCIe lanes. Sometimes both.
>>
>>51508665
you can't compare Flash ROM and its latencies with RAM. both serve a distinct purpose, but like I said and will reformulate in a more english post.
having ROM/SSD on its own DIMM format cards just like the RAM should be how things in the future would be designed, to maximize bandwidth, not going through several controllers but talk face to face with the CPU's memory controller, that's what I like with AMD's RAMdisk design. and keep a real terabyte-ish hard disk for the porn and warez.

>Its weird that the 256gb one has a shit write speed compared to the 512gb one.
No, that's actually par for the course for all SSDs. A 120GB SSD will have worse performance than a 250GB version due to the controller having to compensate for the lack of NAND to utilize, plus keeping the remaining NAND usable for as long as possible.
>Is it possible to run them in Raid 0, think of the Fallout 4 load times
No benefit over a regular SATA 3 SSD. I've barely seen a one second load time reduction on my SM951 AHCI with a heavily modded Skyrim. Games just do not come anywhere close to utilizing the SSD's full read potential.

You're all retarded, M.2 is a form factor with several different implementations. Some M.2 drives use PCIe lanes, some use SATA lanes, it's determined by the drive. The two most common types of M.2 modules are B notch and M notch, B can use two PCIe lanes or SATA, and M can use 4 PCIe lanes or SATA.

The 950 NVMe drive uses PCIe lanes and is keyed for M notch M.2 slots.

Yes, but Samsung SM951 throttles its write speed at a certain temperature. It's well documented and I've experienced it a few times while using it as my primary scratch disk.

It would, yes, but 8 years ago we were on SATA-2 which was a max of 300MB/s while PCI-e was at 2.0 which could push 500MB/s through a 1x connector AND we didn't have SSDs that could fully saturate a SATA cable.

So the PCI-e was blazing fast. Now it might be marginally faster than a PCI-e SSD or m.2 due to access times but there would be nothing in it.
