what does /g/ think about 8 TB harddiscs. thinking about buying this for my highres movie archive.

heard its incredibly slow after a certain dataamount. but for moviewatching i guess its ok?

also heard 10TB coming soon.

what do you guys think?
>>
I doubt it
>>
It'll be fine.
Just don't use it for stuff you can't easily redownload.
Don't worry about waiting, all that matters is you get a good price/TB
Usually they're $50/TB, with the black Friday sales you should find some for $25/TB, or $200 for 8TB.

you doubt what?

>Just don't use it for stuff you can't easily redownload.
you mean high failure rate?

also kek at blackfriday - we dont really have this at eurpe/germuny
>>
>>51504164
been running two ST8000AS drives in our backup server, they take fairly regular dumps of data and have been ok

also kek'ing hard at having 20tb of storage in one machine 4tb+(2x8tb)

See if amazon ships anything to you.
They're shipping fucking SSD's to australia now for god sake.

And yes, high failure rate.
Important work documents could almost be trusted to a western digital, if it's 6 months old and in good condition, but I'd still keep a backup.
A segate, nope. Never.
>>
Do you think Seagate will ever lift their reputation out of the trash /g/?
>>
Why fuck do you keep storing shit you will never rewatch/play/read/whatever fucking turboshits
>>
>>51504388
Digital hoarding is one hell of a drug.

nope, we can only use local european amazon domains and of course no newegg, black friday here is "we will increase this shit that is already 200% more expensive than the murrican shit because muh yurotaxes and € price 40% and sold you with 30% off"

Hell, most of the shops here started the black friday yesterday just to sell overpriced shit with "discounts" for a fucking week
>>
>>51504424
I feel you man, I feel you.
>>
>>51504424
This pretty much. Europeans always get fucked over on hardware matters. Discounts don't exist here.
>>
>>51504388

Hoarding and actually it is nice to have a high-res copy on hand when you feel like watching a movie right now rather than wait hours for the poorly seeded torrent to download.
>>
>>51504698
Well i have 500/500 FTTH and 7/1 ratio in a private HD tracker, so I can download a full BD movie in the time I make a coffee

>even my 15 years old pentium 3 hitachi hard drive is still working
>the only time I got a fucking Seagate it died 1literally 10 days after warranty expiration
Yeah
That said, I fucking hate my WD black, its noisy and perfomance is pretty bad
Hitachi is the only way
>>
this is so strange all the drives i had have been western digital while the seagate 160GB i have is working for 5 years now...

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-q3-2015/

See 8tb in the chart
>>
>>51506005
Hitachi is owned by WD you moron.
>>
>>51506221
The only seagates I have left working are the old 160GB ones, most of the larger capacity seagates that I have has died, 3/4 500gb seagates have failed in the past 24 months.

Currently still have 2 blue caviars, 1 seagate and 1 Hitachi in the 500gb capacity range.

The Hitachi one is my dedicated torrent drive too.

So
>>
>>51507135
WD bought Hitachi, but during the merger they were forced to sell the 3.5" division to Toshiba.

HGST drives on the market right now are WD drives.

Toshiba makes the true Hitachi 3.5" drives now.

>implying normal users are cramming 20+ drives into a single enclosure and running them hard 24/7
>using consumer drives in a datacenter

buying a drive is hit or miss regardless of what it is, but an 8tb is pretty fucking sketchy

Not even once.
>>
>>51504164
so what is the smarter thing to do?

buy several 2TB WD or HGST?
