Please critcize my build.
Using my old case and I have the motherboard and psu already. Been getting stuff when on sale.

Build your PC to ITX or mini ITX.

Comfy and easy to move around.

I have a i7-920 now and don't really overclock. I might get the k, depending on what one comes up for sale first.

Partpicker is wrong here.
The Samsung SM951 256GB is compatible with the motherboard and it is NVMe.

Whats ref. gpu and why is it a bad choice?

To my understanding Fury X are all 'reference GPUs' (that are sold), no?

Sapphire Fury X comes with Sapphire's modified water cooling and is pretty cheap 644 euros where as 980TI is 270 euros more expensive.
>>
polite sage in case this thread isn't naturally bumping.

I bought a fx-8350 and a Gtx 960 4gb (it was on sale for same price as 2gb, snatched it up). This is a 1080p build. Did I do good? Inb4 should have bought an i5 unlocked.
>>
>>51454811
>Whats ref. gpu and why is it a bad choice?
Nvidia comes up with a GPU design, then a company like EVGA pays Nvidia to use that design. EVGA then may take this reference design and modify it slightly to their uses. In the above case EVGA modified the reference design, overclocking it and adding water cooling to deal with the excess heat.
>>
>>51454913
>Did I do good?
No because AMD is going bankrupt and Intel is now two generations ahead.
>>
>>51455045
So sometimes a card is sold as is - without the brand owner (EVGA) making changes it to - yet it is sold under the brand?

So you might have two EVGA GTX GPUs, one reference and one not?

How can I tell if card being sold is a reference card?
>>
>>51455084
Nvidia doesn't compete with its distributors, like EVGA. There is no Nvidia 980Ti for sale, it is an EVGA 980ti, using Nviida's design.

You tell the difference by price and look. You can easily see if they put different cooling on the card. Then you look at price. An overclocked card with a different block is more expensive than the reference design.
>>
>>51455169
So by default a good rule is, if it is branded (EVGA, Sapphire etc) it is not a reference card?

Damn this got me even more confused since I read Fury X was being sold as reference card but I only see branded Fury Xs like Sapphire CLub3D etc (of which I plan to get the Sapphire since their watercooling got some positive words)

idc about that. Just wondering it was a good selection of parts. I'm running fallout 4 at about 65 fps at 1080 so i'm pretty happy. Just wondering If i kinda overspent or anything. Hence the polite sage in my other post.
>>
>>51455262
>Just wondering If i kinda overspent or anything.
Then yes if you paid retail. I paid $156 for the motherboard and psu in my OP pic. Waiting for a good sale on the ram, M.2, and cpu. Probably won't buy the gpu until late next year.

>>51456455
I don't like the wattage. Get a higher psu with at least a gold rating. Also I recommend an M.2 drive like the Samsung SM951 256GB NVMe. Speed is unbelievable. And I still would rather this gpu:

Is this super optimized for a r9 380 build? My min/max tendencies are driving me crazy. Trying to get a as-good-as-it-gets build for under £600, if that isn't possible then under £650.

Better than OP's build, and wattage of the PSU is fine. You can make do with a 550W even. however the quality of the PSU is barely above shit-tier and for such a build you really want a better PSU. If you're really broke, you can get a Seasonic S12II-620W Bronze, but I'd suggest the EVGA GS-550 or G2 series (avoid G1).

Storage isn't optimal really, but the PSU is the issue that you really should change.
>>
>>51457294
The 380X just launched, you might be interested on it. Otherwise looks good.
>>
Hope OP doesn't mind if I ask for rates on my first build. Already have a hard drive. Does it look good otherwise? Looking to stay under $600.

Swap SSD for 500GB SATA. These Samsung drives aren't fast enough to cap SATA so you're wasting money on half the size
>>
>>51458865
ASrock is a mediocre company and H97 is a bad chipset. Look for an MSI Z97 PC MATE. I think you can get one for $10 more.

Swap the RAM for a single stick of 8GB. Dual channel give you an increase of like 5% speed. Better to just get a higher capacity part and leave more slots open in my opinion because it has more resale value.

If you can spare a few more dollars, swap the power supply for an EVGA Supernova 650. It's higher quality in every way and costs $10 more. The one you have chosen is NOT MODULAR. This means you are going to have a bunch of junk cables sticking out around the case BLOCKING AIRFLOW and generally looking bad. The supernova 650 is fully modular meaning you only plug in what you need.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head but maybe someone else can.
>>
>>51459936
Oh right, I just thought of it. SSD. Ignore the motherboard change. Ignore the power supply change. GET A 120GB SSD. You'll go $20 over budget but it is WELL WORTH IT. Personally I'd even go as far as to get an SSD and no GPU, then run on my CPU's IGP until I can afford a GPU, if it was the only way I could afford an SSD. That's how good they are compared to a hard drive (as a boot drive, not for storage obviously). It's a real bitch to go back later and have to delete all your data in order to clean install Windows onto an SSD later. Buy it now and start with it so you don't end up having to do that.

Also if you can spare the money after that for the PSU upgrade I'd still do it, but the SSD is key.

A cheap great SSD is the Samsung 850 EVO 120GB.
>>
>>51459936
>>51460001

Thanks a lot for the advice man! Didn't think an SSD made THAT much of a difference but I'll definitely look into all the changes you suggested.

M.2 is a slot on the motherboard that has recently been gaining steam. The main use is for SSDs. M.2 uses PCI Express lanes rather than SATA, and as a result has a much higher theoretical max speed. Although as of now you probably aren't going to get anything M.2, especially in this budget. By the time you make your next build after this one, then M.2 will have matured to the point where M.2 SSDs are on average fast enough and cheap enough to take into consideration on your build. You can ignore him.

On point, this is a really decent build. Probably around the exact same I would have made if going for this budget, but two things to note.

1. You NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED a fucking SSD. This isn't 2009 anymore. They're cheap as dirt and give you a gargantuan performance improvement to everyday PC use. A good 120GB SSD goes for $60 USD. Buy one and use it as your boot drive. It'll be more than enough as long as you don't have horrible habits of storing many huge files on your desktop or documents folder because it uses the main drive.

2. The case. It's underwhelming. Invest 8 more pounds for a Fractal Design Define S which is a top of the line quality case that utilizes a new design style of mounting drives and such in the back so as to allow maximum cleanliness and airflow. Also it's really, really well built. 10 pounds more than that gets you the windowed version.

Fractal does a good job showing off the features here

>Skylake
Stopped reading there
>>
>>51460341
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/MR7VVn
So it kinda bumped the price up a bit, and the lack of a disk drive space is bugging me because I like buying games on disk to compensate for my awful internet.
>>
>>51460517
You can get the Define S with no window. It's 10 pounds cheaper, if you think it's worth saving 10 pounds over.

You could invest in an external USB optical drive if you really, really want to use physical discs. In my opinion having a super high quality case that will have insanely good airflow is more important than the convenience of a 5.25" internal disc drive.
>>
>>51460611
Also, Haswell CPUs come with a stock cooler unlike Skylake. You could buy the cooler later down the road if it's just out of your budget.

Downgrade from an 850 Pro to an 850 EVO to save even more money. The performance difference is negligible. It's already such a jump up from an HDD that the small difference between the two won't be missed.

>>
>>51460678
MSI Z97 PC MATE is a better motherboard for less money

i5-4590 is a $5 difference so get it for the increased 100MHz clock speed

Corsair CX series is garbage. EVGA Supernova 650 NEX is the same exact price before the mail in rebate (let's face it you're probably not going to remember to do it). The GS series 650 is just $5 more so get that.
