Google Play Music seems a bit less aggressive on my Nexus 5 shitty battery, but it's fucked up on so many levels, I don't even wanna go there.
So, /g/ which functional (as a bonus - beautiful?) Android music player doesn't annihilate your phone's battery?
First off what codec are your audio files in?
Second try Poweramp. It uses its own playback engine so it might use less, seeing as Shuffle uses the built in music playing API.

Nah, it's 320kbps mp3s, nothing too heavy. I'm listening to a great deal of podcasts via Player FM and 45 mins of local files brings me ~4-5% down.

Take a look at Winamp then. It's gapless, no trouble at all. Also shoutcast with over 50000 channels.Very light on the cpu. Not on the playstore and discontinued, but it's pretty much perfect. Wireless sync, recently added playlist, good screen-estate for album art, yada yada.

Shuttle player went to shit with material design updates.
Walkman it's decent, but since you can't get all the "Bonus" to work on non-sony phone it's nothing extraordinary.
BlackMusic Player EX (iirc the name) it's quite good, useful for amoled devices since it included themes and don't kill your battery on background.

I haven't had any issues with shuttle+ using up lots of battery. I'm using an older version but can't imagine itd be that big of a difference.
