So I have a Thecus 2310 NAS, two 4TB WD greens in JBOD.

When I transfer files between my laptop and it over wifi I get speeds of around 30mbps, pretty decent since my router only does 65mbps max so i know the transfer speed is sufficient. However When I try to stream stuff on smplayer it stutters every few minutes, even streaming a 300mb episode of something. Adjusting the cache size doesn't seem to help what gives?

Oh, I dunno. The 2GB 380 is 125 so it seemed like a deal. Couple that with selling my old gpu for around 70-80 I'd be paying around 65. But I guess I could wait on the 380X...

So I mean if you can get a 380 for $125 go for it.

Is it possible remount a fan from one frame to another fan's frame?

I ask because about a month ago a cable got caught in my 140mm CPU fan (which has 120mm hole spacing). Consequently 1 blade broke, but thermal performance didn't change drastically. (Or at least I didn't notice a huge difference.) Now the fan wobbles and make really awful creaking sounds, most likely because the fan blade balance has been affected for a month now.

I'm a cheap bastard. I got a spare 140mm case fan, but it has 140mm hole spacing, and won't fit on the wire retainers on the fan clips.

Is there any way to splice the 140mm fan from the 140mm frame into a my broken 140mm fan's 120mm frame?

What sorts of hardware do you need to run Skyrim on PC at a normie FPS? My friend is interested but I only do MCMC simulations and turn based strategy - no knowledge of CPU/GPU combos...except that you assholes will say something about 10nm i7 with over 9000gb.

>>
>>51447216
>>51447281
Basically. My CPU fan died a few monthes ago and the worst thing I had to do was take another fan from inside my case and stick it where the old one went. Sure the airflow isn't as good and it's a bit of a hackjob, but whatever works, and it's probably cheaper than buying a new fan.
>>
>>51447281
Tried that, but my zip ties are the big fat thick ones I bought to really zip the shit out of thick power supply cables and such.

They won't fit between the fins, nor will it even insert into the screw hole of the fan.

I'd rather not spend $3 of gas to buy a $8 jumbo bag of tiny zip ties just to get 4 zip ties that I need. That's half a 140mm fan with 120mm mounting holes.

steambox? A wireless media/file server is so handy, I can stream stuff to my tv using my playstation, to my laptop, to a desktop pc, to my phone even. It's all centralised. I realised using JBOD is not the best but I have everything important backed up properly anyway so I'd rather have a bigger array over redundancy.

It's little fuss with the exception of this annoying buffering problem I'm having. I can copy the movie from the server to my laptop in less than a minute, but on playback it stutters. It's fucking killing me.

Stupid question true reality this is what I actually want to know:

I have a budget of about $900. I have a computer that has some parts I like and some parts I don't fucking know what's best and what's terrible. I spend a lot of time photoshopping and video editing, but that's basically it. I just get bored and "play around." Nothing gets published in any capacity. No tumblrs or drawthreads.

ANYWAY, the key part of the last paragraph was "I get bored." I want to play and edit games, again, for my own amusement. I specify this because I don't want you to think I'm some youtuber who is out to get the best quality AND to capture it all. I just want to play one game, and I want to mod that one game.

Let's say, hypothetically, I wanted to play and mod Fallout 3 (and, of course, New Vegas), what would be the optimal assortment and configuration of parts? I assume I need a new CPU, and graphics card. what else do I need to know? If those are the parts I should go new on, what should I get?

I said the bad words. I said "Fallout 3." The answers I get will not be nice. I'm stupid, as per the thread theme.

Trying to get ahoviewer working with webm's and rar's. Apparently it cant find them when I run ./bootstrap:
checking for gstreamer ... no
checking for unrar/dll.hpp ... no
checking for libunrar/dll.hpp ... no
and those features don't work after compiling. I'm not sure why it cant find gst as I have what I assume to be all the needed packages for it. As for unrar, I think i managed to install this https://github.com/vilkov/libunrar (I assume this is what it wants), but what I did didn't make those specific files (I made libunrar.so).

If anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong that would be great.

Windows user here, wanna try out Ubuntu. As a rough estimate, how much hdd space should I reserve for what, at the very least? Like, size of swap partition, and how big should the system partition be if I want to be on the safe side?

Or wait, let's rephrase that. I got ~500GB free space for an Ubuntu install. How should I partition that for Ubuntu?
>>
>>51448632
Just give Ubuntu the 500GB and go with what it sets up, worry about partitioning when you know what will be best for your needs. You'll be reinstalling when you learn more about Linux anyway

>>51448630
Do you have all the -dev packages you need?

>>51448632
like >>51448679 says the defaults are sensible

but if you want to get autismal:
You don't need a swap partition if you have enough memory. A typical partitioning scheme is to separate / and /home. The system (and installed programs, which can get quite big in the case of video games) go in / and all user files go in /home.

I did this in like 5 minutes using the clonestamp and content aware fill.

Say I put these test tables in a database. Why wouldn't it be a one-to-one relation? The ids in both tables have to be unique within the table, so be default wouldn't that mean only one id can be associated with the other id and vice-versa without any sort of duplicates? I can't see why this wouldn't be 1-to-1 but reverse engineering it in mysql always gives a one-to-many relation.

create table test(
id int not null,
name varchar(15),
primary key (id)
);

create table test2(
id int not null,
description varchar(20),
primary key (id),
foreign key (id) references test(id)
);

Now getting a make error:
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lGLESv2
likely because none of the libgles* packages are installed. Doing so would remove libglapi-mesa for a newer version, however, a shitload of other things depend on the older version unfortunately, so it wants me to remove them as well.
The second option it gives me is in the pic.

I guess my question is now whether or not I should go forward with this, or if it will break everything.

I will use letters x,y,z for the values of type a,

and p,q for transition functions of type s -> (a,s).

Best thing I do with the few drives I've dropped like that is push some stuff to it I really want backed up, then put them away. I already have that stuff backed up properly, but if the planets aligned and all my other good backups were destroyed there is still a small chance the damaged drives will save me.

The old WinXP machine I used to control my 3D-Printer doesn't start up anymore. Black screen, no beeping (I haven't found a bios speeker anyways). Just all fans running at max speed like they usually do for ~2 seconds but now they do it full time.
I tried powering it up with everything but PSU, CPU and graphics card disconnected (MB has no RGB output) but I got the same result. PSU and graphics card are tested and work fine I can't find any obviously dead caps either. Anything else I can try?
If no, can I just take my C hard disk drive and connect it to another PC to retrive some data?

I'm too scared to build it myself. Thermal paste is one of the things that scares me the most.

Prebuilt (if reputable seller) means I won't have to deal with compatibility issues

I get a free win 8.1 key. This may not seem like a plus to you, but I'd never feel safe enough to use my credit card online with a pirated windows.

IF I actually get to save anything, it will be pocket change at best, since chain stores gets bulk discounts. I'll gladly pay that pocket change to have it assembled for me.

I can link you the machine I'm looking at, but unless you're scandinavian you won't be able to read it.
>>
>>51451111
not the guy you were responding to, but you should know that most hardware stores offer you to build it for you for like 20 bucks. you'll save money on the parts, get the parts you actually want and you don't have to build it.

come on son, really? it's easy as hell. there are literally hundreds of guides to teach you how, and if you're really worried, just run some benchmarking software to stress the cpu and get it hot to see how it cools

If you're a massive pussy and want to keep yourself from learning, they will build your PC for you, lightly cable manage it, and test it for stability before shipping it to you for a $50 fee.

i want to create a rather simple website is a service to a large group of people working within a specific industry.

how do i figure out 'everything' ? all i have is a very clear idea of what i want and very solid design skills. i need to know these:

- what to pay a competent reliable developer?
- what running expenses would be attached (domain name, hosting etc) ?

btw i'm not asking for answers to these questions (you'd need much more info etc). i'm basically asking where to ask these questions, lol.

i'm willing to pay somebody 100$ for 2 hours of their time to give me a written consultation-reply-email thing, but i just don't know where to look for a reliable person that really knows what they are talking about.

A competent, reliable, web developer?

First thing first, know that most web devs are petty shits because they get used by a lot of smaller/medium sized businesses who don't think they need to pay once the work has been finished.

Second, you're probably looking at $30/hour if you do hourly, but quite frankly it's hit or miss. Look for webdevs who have websites they've done in the past for reference. You should try to get a quote on the price once you've both come to understand what you want.

Now, I'm not sure if I've completely understood your questions -

Are you looking to hire a webdev long term for maintaining and managing a website? because I'm assuming you're looking for a freelance job to design a site and you handle it from there.

Running expenses are next to negligible on a small scall. On a large scale, it's worth looking into infrastructure as a service (IaaS)

>>
>>51451358
>>51451466

I really need trustworthy information though, you can only reliably get that by being willing to pay for a professionals time.

1. the website will be simple visually but the underlying mechanics might be a little more complex. it will essentially be a service for people within an industry to peer review eachothers products, either anonymously (say you want to evaluate how competitive your product/service is) or with name attached. the idea is then that the system calculates the rating by considering the reviewers rating. am i making sense? it's a little hard to explain without disclosing everything. i'm not super worried about 'someone stealing my idea' because it relly only works within a very niche industry but i still rather keep a low profile for now (i'm not after profit although i think the idea is valuable).

2. i know domains are cheap i own some of those however i'm getting mixed feedback with hosting?? the amount of data i'd need to host is not massive, but not entirely neglible either... i think. shit this stuff is confusing for me...

>>51451466
30/hour is totally what i would be willing to pay, rather than flat rate (i'd feel like any web dev working for a fixed price will be somewhat shitty and amateurish because i'd expect there to be quite a bit of back and forth and fixing near the end, right?

does the site require maintenance or management? design wise (visuals) i would deliver everything, i'd just need a freelance dev to code it and deliver it to me... if that's how it works. does user interaction require for a page to be mantained?

how do i deteermine wether my needs are small scale or large scale?

thanks a ton for your help already guys
>>
What is a good download manager? I used to use Jdownloader a few years back, but once they started doing adware bundled in, I got rid of it. Whether it's a program or a firefox addon, I'm fine with so long as it's good.
>>
>>51451897
User interaction does not require a page to be maintained.

What sort of traffic are you expecting? If you really have no idea, you need some that is scalable (see amazon ec2).

If you can give a webdev a decent mock-up of the website (whether it be through drawing or some mspaint job) then that is absolutely fine. If you have resources ready for them to use (images, etc.) then they'll be able to use them as you want. Hell, if you have a frontend already completed and just need them to implement a application to review eachothers products, then you can still find someone.

Now, for actually finding a person, two choices - Freelance, or firms. I'm hesitant to refer you to anyone, because honestly, it's best you look yourself and see their portfolios and decide if it's worth it to you. Big name firms are expensive, something that might be more reasonable would be along the longs of SumatoSoft.

Essentially the only way to get pageviews without being banned is to have them trickle in over time and slowly trickle out to the point where they stop.

Realistically, you would need a botnet, because proxies are obvious & a single location refreshing a page is a quick way to get caught.

by now they're the same. windows 8.0 has the least botnet, since gwx.exe and other windows 10 related updates like telemetry are not present. 8.0 performs better than 7 and almost the same as 8.1
>>
>>51453097
Isn't 8.0 a bit wonky though? I mean, everyone went on how shit it was before 8.1 was out.

But I mean, disabling all the updates and stuff from either. Are they about they about the same or does 8.1 has a lot more botnet "built in" compared to 7?
>>
>>51453117
've been using 8.0 since it came out and never had any complains. the biggest issue for people was the 'missing' start menu (in my opinion metro is superior, but that's just me). runs all the latest games and allows for all the customization i need. i had more problems with 8.1 (e.g. my laptop wouldn't shut down properly due to driver issues).

if you're going to disable all the updates, which i wouldn't recommend, windows 7 has the least amount botnet/bloat.

Are USB external HDDs reliable for backups? Or should I buy a regular old internal HDD instead.

How's this for a setup?

>Buy SSD, clean install of OS (Linux & small Win 10 partition for compatibility / future proof)
>Use current HDD as generic storage & duplicate some important stuff on the SSD.
>Buy a new external HDD / cheap internal one, do full backup on there and put it in a safe place.

At the moment everything is spread over memory sticks and an aging external drive & various old DVDs. There's no coherency (but I don't have anything that important either)
>>
>>51453509
If you can live with the super-high latencies, maybe a USB screen would work for you?
>>
>>51453544
>USB external HDDs reliable for backups
I've had mixed luck with external drives. Most seem okay for occasional back-ups only, but I've had two die prematurely without any warning.
I actually use a 960GB SSD in an external enclosure through an eSATA (not SATA Express) for back-ups and storing semi-frequently used programs. The good thing about that is you can plug it in continuously and have it run the same as a normal internal drive.
I'm pretty sure you can do the same for hard drives with a USB 3.0 enclosure (platter drives will never be able to saturate USB 3.0 or eSATA), since external drives tend to have poor-reliability drives to save costs.
Apart from expensive NAS enclosures, most external drives aren't meant to be running for more than a few hours a week.
>>
>>51453509
I'd rather not, and those are quite expensive as well. I actually just need like, a tablet but without the ability to run software and just connect that to a hdmi port.

I found www.amazon.com/Tontec%C2%AE-Raspberry-Display-AT070TN90-Controller/dp/B00G60FJNG, but the fact that the internals are exposed makes it real nasty.

Don't buy unless you're getting an ultrawide screen. A 16:9 screen really doesn't benefit from being curved without getting ridiculously close to the panel. In my opinion, a 21:9 screen needs a curve, especially if you're using an IPS monitor.

I'm trying to train a simple NN but no matter how I arrange nodes or layers - what activation or training method I use - the error stays the same even over millions of iterations.

Are there any apps for Android like ms paint?

Hello /g/,

Does anyone have insight into why games would suddenly cap themselves to 24fps when run in Borderless Windowed mode when they used to never do so before?

This is universal across all games and they all used to run exactly the same in fullscreen or borderless at 60+ fps (I push 144 for less intensive games).

I have dual monitors but it never used to do it before and I have messed with switching main displays and plugging into diff ports on the 980 ti.

Good day /g/entlemen. I come to you looking for direction. Long and short of it, I'm pretty sure my Mobo is fuckered after a move. I didn't have much of a choice and brought my computer with me on a day and a half bus ride and I've gone through several hours of troubleshooting to try and get life back into the system. I'm pretty sure she's dead at this point and I'm wanting to just move on and rebuild, almost from the ground up.

However, I want to rebuild with a purpose. I wish to do twitch/youtube streaming of games and still be able to play them at decent settings. Where would I be able to find information on what sort of setup would be good for this sort of thing? I ask here since it's technically a general quick questions thread. Should it warrant a full thread later today, I'll probably come back and post one, but I'm about to head out of the house a making a thread on my phone is suffering.

check your pc for mpaa trojans
>>
>>51455246
what resolution you plan to use?

for 1080p60 any decent i7 and a higher end GPU should do the trick.

see the sticky for parts.
>>
>>51455246
Depends on your budget

What power PSU for i7 4790 and gt730 ddr5? 500 W should be enough right? The GPU is pretty low end and low power consuming.
>>
>>51455323
Would probably be fine with 400 but 500 gives you room to upgrade the GPU.
>>
>>51455291
mpaa as in the generic company?
>>

>>51455291

Is this good for $700?
pls help
>>
>>51454610
GitHub pages are a great solution.
>>
>>51455372
I wouldn't consider it a ripoff
>>
>>51455372
ask them to keep the 760 and knock the price to 500 and you haveyourself $200 closer to a good GPU while getting everything else dirt cheap
>>
>>51455478
I've tried to haggle everything, the original price was $900. I've got it to $700, and gotten a 23" monitor, a keyboard and g100s mouse added in with this computer. Don't think I can do any better and the guy seems to be losing patience.

well if you got a m/kb and monitor too for that price then yes, do your own work to sell the gpu and go for it

Can anyone recommend me a good starter SQL book?

I can write basic queries and I've dealt with MySQL before, but I'd like to learn more to be able to give better and more detailed answers to job interview questions.

Why don't you ask him in the clover thread?

Doing remedial Computer Science course at Britbong college at the moment. I had no prior experience with programming but was asked to learn HTML and CSS as a very basic level via a Codeacademy rip-off. I blasted through it and most of it seemed pretty simple but I don't know how I can learn other languages in a more practical manner, I'm mostly interested in C# and RoR at the moment but I'm open to suggestions as well,

Is there a way I can backup my bluetooth drivers without downloading some software to do it?

By practical I mean in a manner that can actually allow me to experiment with my own projects etc.

comment bugged, I meant to preface by saying

'I want to know how I can go about learning a new language in a practical manner as opposed to just following it all step by step and being babysat through the whole thing.

Repeating my question from last thread.

I need to RMA my RAM, but I don't have the original packaging. The email containing the RMA said
>"Packing envelopes is not adequate packaging, as the envelope does not provide protection during transit. A shipping box with adequate packaging material should be used for the return shipping of the hardware"
What would be "adequate packaging"? I was planning on putting the RAM sticks in an antistatic bag, which would be placed inside of a padded envelope, then putting it inside of a regular box. Is that not adequate? What would you guys recommend?

Is it a good idea to use WD greens for my home server - I'll be using RAIDZ2.

I'll switch off that head parking shit with idle3-tools or wdidle.

I was thinking about 3TB or 2TB, 4 drives

Thinking of finally taking the plunge on a SSD come black Friday.

What are the ones to go for?
I'm a poorfag so cost does go a long way.

Also. How crucial is brand name RAM? Thinking of picking up another 4gb's of that as well.
>>
Whats a good motherboard for an AM3+, supports USB 3.0, has pcie slots and all that jazz?
>>
>>51456575
Whatever you do, don't buy a 3TB drive. They've been hexed or something, because they have much higher failure rates when compared to literally any other size.
>>
>>51456586
Google defines it as "unwanted software included on a new computer or mobile device by the manufacturer," which I'd say is a close enough definition.
>>51456616
Brand name RAM really means nothing. The only thing I'd advise against is buying the cheapest Chinese shit you can find. Often trying to RMA that RAM gets more expensive than just buying new RAM.
>>
>>51455297
Yeah, that's about where I'd want to be. I had attempted to stream before with a phenom II quad core and a radeon hd6790 and it just wasn't keeping up. Was at 720p as well. Just don't know how much having, say, two video cards would help.

So what's the most trusted site for cracks etc? I got tired of WinRAR begging for money, but randomly downloading some cyka blyads crack straight away doesnt sound like a good idea either.
