I restarted my browser and am seeing ads for the first time in years so I'm assuming uBlock has gone to shit. What's the best current adblocker?

Where are you seeing them at? I got them on Nyaa and I've seen them on a few other sites no matter which adblocker I'm using.
Luckily, Nyaa uses a certain naming scheme that distinguishes the ads from the site icons so I was able to block them with a custom rule in UBorigin.
The ads you've run into are likely blockable the same way.

uBlock Origin fails on me a few times each day. I don't know what it is but if I refresh the page then the ads go away.

That could mean that the domains changed. Adblock Plus would have the same problem until the filters are updated.
