To the anon that had posted their resume. You really need to look for a template to base your resume off of.

Also, I'm down here in Keller, TX.

I really would like a real job now... what changes should I make to me resume? should I include a hobbies section?
>>
>>51439680
Oh god, I remember telling /g/ i was going to do some of those courses, and one guy said it was all useless baby shit and he did them in high-school as a joke. What he claimed to do turned out to be 1500-2000 in exam fees alone, i think he may have been lying...
>>
>>51442909
Someone on /g/ lying? I can't believe it.

Well since you didnt do any of those certs then what have you been doing anon?
>>
>>51442955
Video-games, mostly.

What certs are good?
>>
>>51438656

>Network Engineer
>8+ years exp
>CCNP (expired)
>I got a 4 year STEM degree and interned
>80k year (public sector)

As you all should know, degrees and certs are worthless without experience. You'll need to intern/work the help desk to get started in most places. Interning is your best bet.
>>
>>51442886
No hobbies, list some more technical skills you know. Do you under OSPF now? Then list that shit.
>>
>>51442886

If you have to limit your resume to 1 page, you dont have enough.

Don't be afraid to break out into multiple pages. Really beef out your personal accomplishments.

Second that. You'll need to know people as well, this is what gets you the good jobs. Do your best at networking if possiblities arise.

In Australia, Internships are not available to people with a bachelor's degree

>>51443056
What technical skills? I've spent two years since i graduated not getting employed, i turn up to entry level positions that literally pay less than working in a supermarket and are up against people with 5+ years in the industry. Everybody demands STRONG EXPERIENCE in entry level roles.
>>
>>51443209
>In Australia, Internships are not available to people with a bachelor's degree
it doesn't have to be official, just something to get your food in the door. Go work the help desk and company X even if you want to do database stuff. Any tech experience is good experience.

>>51443209
>What technical skills? I've spent two years since i graduated not getting employed, i turn up to entry level positions that literally pay less than working in a supermarket and are up against people with 5+ years in the industry. Everybody demands STRONG EXPERIENCE in entry level roles.
In that CCNA book you're learning about spanning tree, and routing protocols. List them out. Don't list all of them, but put stuff on there to full up your resume. The HR lady doesn't know that CCNA people know OSPF, but the database system is scanning resumes for people who know OSPF.

>>
>>51443390
Depends on what you mean by "know anything about networking"
>>
>>51443010
Depends on interests.

At the very quick end I'd recommend Network+ and Sec+

Better would be studying for a CCNA, MCSA and the like.

You need to start applying for entry level helpdesk jobs or such now as its difficult even with certs to get jobs without some experience
>>
>>51438656
In high school only know HTML/CSS and on codecademy 75% done with JavaScript lol.
>>
>>51443368
>Go work the help desk

OK, i'll just walk in the door and take a job at the help desk, i'll just work there!

Those jobs are the ones people with 5+ years of experience are going for. And If you ask anybody how they got that experience in the first place, they smile in the most punchable way and say "it's not what you know, it's who you know" and do that fake chuckle. they ALL do this.

these same people have been in the entry level roles since they got them and show no signs of ever advancing, if they had no interest in IT what the fuck are they even doing there?

I have a degree in psychology. (yes, it's useless without grad school I know.)

I want to get into this field, but have no prior experience. What would you guys say is the best route to get into IT? Should I just get certs and hope for the best?

I need to get an A+ and Net+

stay away from general admin stuff

cisco if you're into networks
microsoft or rhel if you do servers
citrix or vmware if virtualization/cloud

Are there any entry-level jobs that do not require being on the phone all day with outside customers? I'd rather not spend 8+ hours a day on the phone.

>Systems Analyst

>B.Sci CompSci, Dipl. Tech in Network/Systems Administration. Never bothered writing certs but know quite a bit about them.
>Charisma and spamming lots of resumes
>80k

Any questions on server or networking certs I can answer a few questions since I know none of you want to go into the more business like shit.
>>
>>51444330
Both courses are very simple man, as long as you have year 1 compsci or year 1 of a diploma you will ace these no sweat.
>>
>>51444651
IT Analyst at business that has onsite infrastructure. You would more so be running around to desks, there would still be some phone shit but not like you described with an outsourced help desk.
>>
>>51444688
Meant for >>51444640
>>
>>51444688
Do these positions require Bachelors generally?
>>
>>51444724
IT Analyst mostly just needs diploma and two years experience, a bachelors , or 4-6 years raw experience with no degree. Be careful though because sometimes this position title can be an outsourced one where you will be on the phone a fuckton so research into the position. You still will be helpdesk but local help desk so it is more personal and you aren't on the phone for a long time.
>>
>>51444769
Seems like without experience you have to suck it up and be on the phone all fucking day. What about NOCs I know they are on the phone some but any info there?
>>
>>51444769
Some places will take fresh diploma grads though too, if you just sell yourself. Two certs looks best but a solid resume can get you hired with no certs if you are lucky and you hit it off in an interview.
>>
>>51444665

what if you dont
>>
>>51444801
Then you have a lot of studying to do and will need some materials.

Net+ honestly isn't that great man and A+ is geeksquad tier. If you want solid versions of these that can make you real bank go for a CNAA and a MCSA -> MCSE.
>>
>>51444796
>NOC
Sorry man I don't know any bros in a NOC. That said if you are desperate to build up experience relocate to a shithole no one wants to work. If you have skills they will hire you with anything.

I'll join these threads more extensive later down the line when I actually have something going for me. I'm only in my first year of schooling, so not much in the way of advice or job opportunities. I'd love to work in a local NOC, but I don't think I have the experience or certification qualifications at the moment. I just don't know where to go for experience when it I'm as bottom of the barrel as it gets starting out. I don't want to graduate and have no experience.

Just started study for my N+. Already have my A+ and Linux+, and using my free vouchers from certiport to study for Microsoft Office Specialist and Microsoft Technology Associate. All in the mean time working on my Network Engineering degree.
>>
>>51444869
Most unis have a local IT department. Some will hire current students. Try that out.
>>
>>51444893
Unfortunately, I have tried that, and their excuse was that they had a budget to abide by and wouldn't be able to pay me anything. I've tried getting goody goody with the people in the netlab, and most likely would have a spot available in the next semester, but who knows if I'll get it.
>>
>>51444856
Any examples or more information on this?
>>
>>51444933
Best bet is to geek squad it till you grad then so you have some work experience. Those types of jobs are pretty chill, you do basic PC things and laugh at the shit people have on their Hard Drives.
>>
We have any DFW bros in there that could potentially help each other out?
>>
>>51445081
I have a local Frys, Microcenter and Best Buy.. which one of these is the best to work for as far as less bullshit helpdesk?
>>
>>51445099
Only ever been to a Best Buy of those three businesses. I'd scope them out, you want as few serious business types as possible at that low of a tier so you can fuck around.
>>
Helpdesk is awful

Glad I'm done with that shit
>>
>cyber forensics investigator

fuck you faggot i wish i was you
>>
>>51445445
Which GIAC cert specifically? Also why is your salary double the norm?
>>
>>51445487
GNFA, CEH(yes regretably), GCFA, GSNA, CFE, CISSP in 6 months (need 5 years of minimum experience to take the test)

also just so you boys know, job security doesn't exist in technology, look what happened to accounting majors, tech is going to be as shitty as them in 2 years.
>>
>>51445508
Consulting + private sector + expensive metro area
>>
>>51445553
Well I wanted to see something like that verification link for CompTIA certs.

Good thing work is paying for your GIAC shit though, they're expensive.
>>
>>51445579
They only cover 6K a year tuition-wise, but if you self study you will save a lot of money. If getting your foot in is the main concern, raw skill and learning with a home lab matters far far more than certs will give you in general.
>>
jncis ?
>>
>>51445617
What type of lab are we talking?

Actual routers, switches, routers and servers?

As for as self-study I've "acquired" some .PDFs and videos from CBTNuggets and the like. I can run VMs using Virtualbox.

I have no certs and no advanced degrees. I am 1 semester (1 elective class) from my BS in information systems.

I have just started on LPIC, MCSE and CCNA (our network engineer just gave me 3 cisco 2800 routers, 2 ASAs and 1 3750 switch to set up a lab).

my job is a mix between support, operations and devops.
>>
>>51439680
Why put all the comptia stuff on there? Just one comptia info graphic is fine, most of their shit is entry level anyway.
>>
>>51442886
Put a lot of skills you have that you don't necessarily have from work experience, if you know how to support windows/macs/linux put that on there, just don't say that you got it from your job.
>>
>>51442909
Everything comptia does is something is the equivalent of 6 months of experience.

Sucks that I developed part of the CCleaner code and I don't get paid shit.

Software creators is not a good choice if you want to live a good life, should've just became a web designer, they get paid so much and it's mad easy to do compared to programming a program.

Google how to write a résumé for the country that you're in, the standards are different. Make sure you really know everything you list in your résumé, and be ready to give examples; because you'll be asked about all of it in the interview.

Get good references from people (IT people most especially). I used my TAFE teachers because I had left on poor terms with my previous employers. Of course I went into TAFE knowing this, and set out to make a good impression them.

That's really all there is to it; other than being able to communicate with people, and being interested in learning computer things. I landed my help desk position halfway through my Cert IV in ICT, with no prior experience and no vendor certifications.
>>
>>51446137
This is true.

Just had a professor tell us medical IT was different in that they set things up for high availability.

As I a listened to her, I am thinking about my datacenter. Our ESX cluster, each physical host with 2 power supplies, each plugged into 2 different PDUs, each plugged into different circuits. All protected by a UPS and a backup generator.

Every VM on the esx hosts is backed up with veeam, from which we can instantly restore a vm to it's previous state (the previous night). All of our data on a SAN with multiple luns all raid 6, which dials home for replacement disks any time a disk might fail. All of which is backed up nightly to a backup server.

Beyond that all of our corporate data is backed up to tapes which are kept offsite in case of disaster.

If that isn't enough, our datacenter is replicated across 3 different geographic locations.

And the shit she told us the medical systems were set up for was about 1/4 as much as what I have at my site.

It's like, bitch please. Downtime is unacceptable for everyone, not just hospitals.

(We're a big data company)
