>7-Zip 15.12 FINAL
The first stable release of 7-zip in 5 years
http://www.7-zip.org/history.txt

I read it also supports Winrar5.0 now, can somebody test it? cause I don't have any rar5 files

IT'S HAPPENING
>>
The last release version was on 2010-11-18 so it's (almost) been exactly five years
>>

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/winrar-winzip-7-zip-magicrar,3436.html

>7-Zip is the clear performance winner of our file archiving and compression tools round-up. It sets the standard for both compression ratio and time with its very own 7z compression format. It manages to beat MagicRAR, WinRAR, and WinZip for the best compression ratio, even with its Fastest Compression setting enabled. 7-Zip is also a lot faster than the competition if the LZMA2 algorithm is used. It took 7-Zip only 25 seconds to compress our benchmark files and folders with Hyper-Threading enabled. Meanwhile, WinRAR took 44 seconds, WinZip 51 seconds, and MagicRAR an arduous 159 seconds.

rar5 support was present from late summer, but final release is nice.

B-but anon, i am.

Are those tests using the older RAR format, or RAR5? Because the last time I cross-checked RAR, RAR5 and 7z, RAR5 was slightly better in compression but significantly faster (2x or more).

Although they removed the pcm compression from it, so on console game images, the old RAR format is still king.

Does it finally fucking have an "extract automatically" option? Auto extract: top level archive content = 1 file -> extract here, > 1 -> extract to subfolder

"Extract automatically" is the thing keeping me from using 7zip because I'm tired of having to open an archive first to check if it'll make a mess or not instead of just extracting it right away

Ffs why do people always look at me like I'm speaking chinese when I bring that up?

Last time I checked, 7zip's context menu had (among others) "extract here" and "extract to <auto named subfolder>".

What I want (and found in bandizip) is "extract automatically": it extracts the archive contents directly if the root of the archive contains 1 item, and extracts to the automatic subfolder if the root of the archive contains more than 1 file.

It's stupidly simple and trivial as fuck to program, but for some reason it's taken the fucking dev years to do it (if he's done it yet, that's what I wanna know) and yes it is an important feature to me: I wanna just extract an archive and get its contents cleanly, automatically. If I have to check the root contents myself, I either lose time checking it, create a useless subfolder in the middle, or extract a clusterfuck of files into my currect directory.

This look great, why isn't that guy trying to include his code into the main 7zip code ??
Or did he try and that didn't succeed ?

Apparently Igor Pavlov is a fucking cunt that doesn't want anyone messing up with his code.

No wonder it took 5 fucking years to push out a new version

I'm serious, why do you pirate winrar? Unless you consider not paying and keep using their illimited trial pirating...

There is no one reason it's just GUI in pascal for 7zip/PAQ etc.
But PAQ itself the best archivers.
