why download when you can stream in browser using the "native" firefox player as you go?

I use youtube-dl nearly daily for my commute but I can't get the :ytsubs flag to work. :ytsubs is there to log you in and download your full subscription feed.
It is broken on github and the last issue stems from may this year. After an hour of searching I read some vague mention about enabling some cookie somewhere with the new YT API but that doesn't do anything.
Anyone know a fix for the :ytsubs option?
