since visual studio code is fully open source now, we can all agree that it is the best editor to date?

corporate baby tit. use GNU/Linux.
>>
im digging it, been using it for a few months

>not as bloated as you would expect
>adding syntax is super easy, supports everything you should need
>doesn't have vim keybindings, but has a fair amount of conveniences to learn
>built in git functions

bretty good
>>
>>51415328
But I already am, anon.
>>
>>51415346
It's a shame about the vim mode thing.
That was the one thing I had hoped they had.

Atom has vim mode, but it is shit. why do I need a separate plugin just to :w
>>
>>51415264
Always has been. GNU/Linux users are unfortunately stuck with shit tier editors from the late 80's.

I think vscode has been opening up their plugin capabilities. So someone might make a vim plugin.

I haven't searched about this in the last month so idk if there are new announcements about it.

This is the most hip picture I've ever seen
>>
>>51415346

>not bloated

this shit installed literally over 100 useless libraries and dependencies on my computer and I cannot get rid of any of them even with software to forcibly remove crap. It cant even reliably import existing projects.
>>
I really wanna love VS Code. I mean, a text editor with full MS Intellisense? Fuck yes, sign me up.

But it's based on the horrible Atom codebase and adopted all the problems that come with it. Written in shitty hipster languages, performance issues and an entire browser engine thrown in the mix.

I wish they just built it from the ground up. It wouldn't have even been hard for MS engineers to do. They could have just ripped the text editor portion of visual studio out and turned it into a standalone app and it would be 1000000000x better.
>>
>>51415346

yeah they only dependency is an entire web browser ;^)

Wait if they're Amish and hipster, don't they cancel each other out?

Why are you using VS Code with GNU/Linux? Use Emacs.

maybe you're talking about visual studio?

This is visual studio code.
>>
I'll just stick with my vim + mingw
>>

Enjoy your shit performance. Stick to Notepad++.
>>
vscode
atom
brackets
sublime
light table
notepad++
emacs
vim

there are way too many text editors now
intellisense is cool but other editors can do similar stuff with plugins
I still use sublime, mostly because I'm used to it
>>

no thanks.

No. They just happen to use Electron as their base.

No thanks

Electron originally was the core of the Atom project, but was renamed and made a separate project. Technically it is a fork of the Atom codebase.
>>
>been using Emacs since day 1 because it was the first suggestion in an IDE page

Am I missing anything? I've literally never used another text editor.
>>
>>51417536
No. If you're happy there is no reason to give a shit.
>>
>>51417894

with this attitude we would have never progressed past being cavemen
>>
>>51418924
But VSCode isn't better than emacs, so switching to it wouldn't be "progress".
>>
>muh meme editors

vim and emacs solved the editor issue long ago.

Emacs sucks in so many ways and hasn't been a serious contender to modern editors since the early 00s, why do you even bring that up?

not him, but n, p, f, and b are too far apart.
not to mention the need to hold ctrl while pressing them.

>>

You know you can use the arrow keys or your mouse to set the cursor too, right?

Or remap those keys to anything you want. That's the power of emacs. That's a very poor complaint m8.

Except it will, to do whatever you want to your editor, like automation or to adapt it to different languages. Of course if you're only going to write 40 line code toy projects you don't need it, I agree.
>>
>>51415264
Does it have command palette and plugins like sublime text?

Vs15 is pretty good. Error messages are not total shit all the time. Works with many langs. I see no issues.
>>
>>51415264
Yes!
>>
>>51415452
This is true too. It is bloat but if set up properly it works like a charm. Try to uninstall it and it will leave breadcrumbs all over your pc.
>>
is there a botnet in this in the linux version? if so, how do I disable?

I quite like it desu, but I have not used many other editors, I like the intellisense on c# but it seems to autocomplete on space sometimes which I didn't think it was bound to, anyway tad annoying sometimes but its pretty good, just found out how to get it to compile and debug, it's nice
>>
Why wouldn't you use a IDE for C# or Java.

I use eclipse for Java, i'd use VS for C#.

I only use text editors for script shit like Html, css , Js or php.

Are all these people recommending a text editors for Java or C# just writing fizzbuzz or shitposters?

Honestly curious
>>
Where can I get sublime for Linux for free forever?

from the sublime website lol
