I am looking for a cheap placeholder card until the new AMD 14nm HBM 2 cards come out.

I am seeing GTX 480s on ebay for around 50$. How do they hold up to modern cards?

I've used a GTX 570 at various points this year between cards, which is the exact same chip with 0.25GB VRAM shaved off. It honestly did pretty good. Performance is roughly equal to a 750 Ti. Good enough for 1080p/60fps at a mix of medium/high settings with post-process AA in things like GTA V and MGS V, as long as you tweak properly to stay within VRAM limits.

The 480 uses a metric fuckton of power though. They managed to calm it down a bit for the 570 respin, although my MSI one got hot and loud as fuck under heavy load. Still have it around as a backup card.

Get a fucking job

The power shouldn't be a issue. SeaSonic Snow Silent-1050. I don't intend to keep the card long. I wonder if my accelero 2 from my 4870 will fit

Why do you think it isn't half melted already?

>placeholder card
Nothing is future proof op, you might as well wait forever since there will always be something better on the horizon.

Just buy a card that's out today instead of buying two cards.

14nm HBM2 is going to be a significant jump from what is out now. No point in spending 600$ on a card now when something better is coming out in quarter 2. It doesn't need to last long.

The next card after the 14nm HBM2 is going to be a significant jump from the 14nm HBM2. No point in spending 600$ on the 14nm HBM2 when there's a better card coming out in another year

The next big jump from HBM2 14nm won't be for at least another 2 years. There is a significant difference between waiting 3 months and waiting 3 years.

We're six months away from the first GPU die shrink in half a decade. Usual "hurr you'll be waiting forever" rules don't apply here.
>>
Just get an r9 390 to last you a few years.
>>
>>51412439
the 14nm die shrink for CPU's didn't really bring big performance breakthroughs though. why are people thinking there's going to be huge improvements for the same die shrink for GPUs?
>>
>>51412498
Because GPUs are on ancient 28nm and both major dGPU manufacturers have announced that they are pretty much doubling perf/watt. Since the power envelope of the top tier cards has stayed pretty much the same for quite a long time now, I'm sure you can see what that means.

The top cards from Arctic Islands/Pascal should pretty much double performance of what we have now. 100% performance increases don't come that frequently with GPU gen updates, so we're now actually at a point where waiting is a pretty smart idea. The performance increase will be very significant, even if it isn't 2x.

really? i thought i had to wait at least another 6
