Welcome to the USA where every single ISP has a data cap in one way or another. Either you have limits on how fast your connection is with no actual cap or your connection has an unrealistic speed but you have a limit on how much you are allowed to use it.

Most ISP companies in burgerland choose to oversell by giving people something crazy like 50+ mbps download but a cap of something like 300 GB (pretty easy to do if you saturate your line obviously). If the companies only want mcfatties to download 300 GB a month the bandwidth speed should reflect that. Not all this overselling of hyped lines you can't take advantage of. Might as well sell me a Ferrari but tell me I could only use it for 10 minutes a day.
>>
Not only do I have to deal with Comcast but I also have to deal with no power because Puget is incapable of quickly assessing damage to power lines. That's some really shitty freedoms we have here.
>>
>>51405460
>monopolies are illegal
they are?
Cartels are illegal, and so is using your monopolistic position of power. Being the only one willing to provide internet in rural areas to provide internet is not illegal.

That's like sueing the only supermarket in your town because they have no competition nearby.

Unfortunately regional monopolies are not illegal, especially since they're not strictly defined as "monopolies" in anti-trust laws.

https://www.mackinac.org/10118

TL;DR as long as they are not given exclusive rights by State/Local governments they are not considered monopolies since they can rent out their infrastructure.

Currently have 300gb with iiNet in Australia, its almost the perfect amount seeing as Netflix doesn't count and our speeds are horrendous. (About 5mbps at current address). Was on the phone with them for an unrelated matter and they noticed I've been with them for 8 years and offered their 1TB plan for the same cost with no re-application fees. all the usage is from two ruku 3's streaming mostly hulu and netflix, steam, youtube, 4chins, and thats about it.

its really amazing just how much data you can burn just from normally browsing the web. i have chrome set to report the total amount used when i clear its temp folder and after a few hour session is about 700mb to 1gb. thats just with an average of 10 tabs open.

you can easily hit 4gb a day just from shitposting.

baffling.

i do have a 2tb cap, but i pay $100 a month just for my 300mpbs / 2tb cap. seeing how many people are getting stuck with terrible 300gb and less caps is crazy on their $70 and less connections.

No, the whole idea would work perfectly fine if it wasn't for the large dose of corruption and retarded laws allowing them to do whatever they want.
If it all worked well, another company would have sprung up and offered better/cheaper services to those getting fucked over.

The issue is that this currently does not happen, leading to exactly this.
Yes, companies should be able to do whatever the hell they want. But that does not mean that they should be capable of getting away with it. Which unfortunately is exactly what is happening right now.

I hope you are being sarcastic here.
It is a common thing in capitalism for politicians to be financially backed by companies and do them favors in return.
I don't know if you are just a fatalist or do you actually believe there shouldn't be room for ethics in business, but if you are forced to be a consumer of a product, you should fight for fair prices and conditions. You would probably act if water suddenly wasn't fairly distributed and priced.

Canada here. Data caps aren't that bad. I was with one ISP (TekSavvy) that gave me a 75 GB cap, BUT they also gave me unlimited downloads from 2am to 8am (off peak hours). So every morning I'd wake up at 6am, download yesterday's anime and anything else I'd need for the day like music, games on Steam, etc. Then during the day, I can keep my data usage under 2GB/day since all I did was check emails, shitpost on 4chan and watch (720p) videos on Youtube.
>>

Right now Comcast isn't posing a data cap in my area. I know it won't stay that way forever but competition in my area will at the least slow down the change back. Verizon is their main competitor here along 2/3 smaller local ISPs in the Richmond, VA area.

If they're going to use a cap they should at least use 500GB.

I only go above 400GB these days when I'm actively seeding a torrent.

I had no idea Verizon went all the way down to Richmond but yeah I'd say you're completely safe. It would be complete suicide for comcast to do data caps anywhere never the DMV. Head honchos in Comcast do want to cap everyone nationwide (except fiber/business because reasons), but Comcast's network team is keeping the balance by pushing for it to be limited to the "monopoly" areas.

Comcast knows if they tried that shit in Washington or upstate Illinois people will just switch to the nearest ISP, might as well keep it to dem durn southerners who can only get Comcast, a wireless network, or satelitte.

Call Verizon and ask them if they'd be willing to extend their network. If you mention how you're thinking of switching they may do it.

I was completely serious about them bending over backwards to lay down fiber. I'm from Maryland and they actually waived their "installation fee" to give us FTTH. Closest node was at the end of the block.

>Internet data caps

Even here in kikeclapistan i get 40/20 for 30$ (including infrastructure) and without any limits. Shame the infrastructure here is shit, so i can't get 100/40 at least.

And if they would impose any data caps then the shit will hit the fan, since cable tv here costs a lot (and they're even raising prices) people usually only use their internet connections.

I doubt I'll ever be able to use this much again which is fine as switching to fibre someday means paying out of the ass for a decent data cap.

300gb? how can you even use your internet with these restrictions?
and how the fuck aren't people just switching to other ISPs?

i'm already at 1.6 TiB this month
>>
>notice that Comcast is failing to show my useage for the month on their site
>call in to ask them why this is

>hang up
>they haven't contacted me back since
>enjoy 150mbps internet with over 1tb of useage a month without repercussions

Comcast, luckily, just doesn't really care that much.

Was it on an English speaking American website? I mean, most people I've spoken to internationally really don't like the US at all.

Americans (the people) are fine, but most people in developed countries would rather not live in the US because of how shitty it is for anyone who isn't rich...

This would be possible if I owned the land, but I live in a apartment complex.

Landlord doesn't seem to care about Fios and doesn't want them digging around if they don't have to.

I would move, but the area is generally safe & quiet here and it's only a 15 minute walk to my job.
