Is there a linux distro commonly used by computer engineers? I'm trying to figure out which distro I should get used to using.

not even memeing. I studied ECE and it was like 70% windows, 25% mac, 5% linux. Most ECE software is available on windows, while linux availability is about as guaranteed as mac availability (as in probably not available, unless you're a pure software guy, in which case, why are you in the ECE department?).
Linux however was the default OS in the CS department. They used Ubunutu 12.04.
