>>51312684
Even though I don't use mac I really think column view is great. The only thing that comes somehow close is Ranger but it's buggy and slow at times...
>>
>>51312684
Is there any Linux file manager that does the same column view?

I loved that view in NeXTStep and later in OS X but I won't use Apple products any longer so it would be nice to get something with a similar view.

I used Apple products from the late 80s and I was the only UNIX engineer in my workplace that used a PowerBook (the black Pismo) with OS 9 and later the Kodiak public OS X beta.
I loved it but I hated the way Apple has gone, the dumbing down of the OS and the hand holding. I don't like the restrictions on the hardware and software so I moved over completely to free software.

On my current PC, I just use OS X's default Finder. The only features it leaves me wanting are an "Up" button, and the ability to sort folders-before-files. I always use "New Window" over "New Tab".

>>51313273
>default plasma 4 color scheme with actually matching wallpaper
>everything is shaded and polished off
I'm sick of all the new themes trying to be flat and material, while many applications still clash with this. This desktop, I always like, though configuration takes longer due to its bevy of tweak-able features (considered "bloat" by people using their machine as a browser).

To jump to the parent directory? That's just Cmd+up arrow

Sort by kind is fairly similar to that, though not the same. Personally I find it better.
>>
Thunar, pretty much perfect, except it doesn't have split view. I also use ranger occasionally.

>>
>>51313430
>Sort by kind is fairly similar to that, though not the same. Personally I find it better.
I can't combine it with arranging the folders by date, though. I'm fucking baffled that "Up" and "Move to..." are features that need key combinations to use.
>>
PathFinder due to preview pane and not leaving fucking modifying directory mtimes to drop a .DS_Store everywhere.

>>51313495
>I'm fucking baffled that "Up" and "Move to..." are features that need key combinations to use
What? Why the hell wouldn't you use key combinations for those?
Are you one of those morons that uses the mouse for everything you possibly can?
>>
>>51313493
Why would you use english, and not japanese, the clearly superior rising sun country language, in your UIs? :o)

It's just a matter of preference. I'm used to having my whole OS in portuguese.
>>
>>51313493
Because i am german and my language is nice and more precise. so tell me, why should i use anything else.
>>
>>51313493
As a non english speaking person myself, why on earth would I use anything other but by native language on my hardware?
It's not like I'm going to let some anglo fuck use it in the next 100 years.

Plus conemu Cygwin tends to bork curses UI's.

I have some troubles quickly finding advanced options in the search bar because I only know the Dutch word for it.

If I were to set my system to English I'd have to google certain translations first.
>>
>using nemo
>no "compress" option in the right click file context menu

This is really annoying how can I fix it?
>>
>>51313540
I use the key combinations, but this seems alienating to new users, especially because some of the combos don't initially appear inside the context menus until the Option key is held down. The new user is typically very uneducated with their new software, so they need a way to learn before they can fly on their own, and hiding options from them doesn't help. OS X is very functional and consistent, and the key combos are great, but this doesn't help the learning curve. I feel like the Finder is one of the weakest parts of the UI, though I don't dislike it. It could be the System 9 finder, where everything is spacial and all over the place.

Probably because it's not trying to emulate a vt100 it's only a fancy windows terminal.

The problem is not with the file managers as much as it is the GTK+ FileChooserDialog.

Was going to ask a similar question, is there any way or workaround to direct the filechooser dialog to an actual file manager e.g. Thunar?

as if 90% linux file managers aren't all fundamentally the same thing because all of them use the same simplistic library. Differences can be found in aesthetics/performance only. That being said, pcmanfm ftw. Does anybody know a fully keyboard driven gui filemanager à la ranger?

On Windows when I was still a mouse pleb, I loved FreeCommander. Probably the most customizable UI I ever used.

i discovered the other day that windows explorer has a very nasty bug in it relating to .wav files. if you make\download a wav file with a marker in it, and then open the folder containing that file windows explorer will jump to 100$ CPU usage, and will stay at that until it's restarted. it is also not able to open or delete the file, nor the folder that contains it. you have to use a third-party utility that can delete the file without trying to grab the metadata

they released one hotfix for it, for windows 7 only, and the hotfix doesn't even work. there is no hotfix in win8/win10 but the bug still remains

markers in wav files have been standard for decades.... thanks microsoft
