I've been using this since 2010 I guess. AMD Athlon 2 - X3 440. It was one of the best budget processors with great performance.
I use this workstation for freelance work with Adobe Creative Suite. My Pen tablet etc. I'm also a huge PC gamer, although having state of the art graphics aren't my priority, I play alot of PC games.
GFX card that I use is the AMD Radeon 7770.
Now using this processor for so long, I haven't really bothered researching or reading up on the current processor options available. I am looking for a budget processor though. I although understand that USB-C might be becoming mainstream soon, and I'm still on a MOBO that has USB1 & 2
What would be the best budget processor going forward? Or is there anything to wait up for? I am okay with AMD Processors.
Cheaper i5 with one of the newer chipset mobos. H170 or what it's called. That's what I'd do.
Wait for AMD's zen that will be there in 2016, or go with a Athlon X4 860K or A10-7850k. If you want a good one real cheap go for the Athlon 5350, I have mine in a M-ITX case (CM elite 110) with 3 fans and a Scythe Mugen CPU cooler and on Manjaro it idles around 7 degrees Celsius and the system takes 35W at max

Wait for Zen, or for the skylake refresh so you can pick up an i5 for cheap.
No point buying anything now when USB3.1, Type-C and NVMe is just starting if you're planning on doing another 5-7 years.
Alternatively, go for a budget haswell build with a used GPU and CPU, like a 4430/60.
Don't forget jewtel's AMT/vPro bullshit, your CPU has a radio transmitter and killswitch built in

if you have proper mobo (you probably don't, but let's try) - something around 770 chipset - consider phenom x6 1100t or even some nice 8320 if your mobo can handle it. This kind of upgrade would give you some nice performance boost, enough to live few more years on this machine and then do full upgrade later.

if yours are 2010 am3, then fat chance that you will be stuck using k10,5. you can find lots of phenom2 on ebay for under 60$, my advice is look for the 95 watt phenoms.
if you going for a new mobo too, then today going for jewtel is the best choice, any dual core haswell will be much faster than your current x3

bulldozers on the list are kinda meh, but 1100t can be awesome if you'll find cheap one. prices of used 1090t/1100t varies a lot, sometimes people think it's deprecated and fuck and then you can get it for pennies, search your favorite used shit auction website.

even the budget 95w phenom II will feel like a thousand dollar upgrade. it was only 80 bucks five years ago. still runs every game i throw at it nicely. admittedly with an 800mhz overclock.
