I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, SELinux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA system, developed by the NSA Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the NSA operating system: the whole system is basically NSA with Linux added, or SELinux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of SELinux.

Because the NSA had a hand in making that, it's been reviewed and audited to death. This is why an open source operating system is superior to a closed source one when evading spyware.
Of course Mr NSA thinks no software is safe from surveillance: he's right, regardless your OS the communications surveillance is the same, as you've still got your Internet traffic going through the infrastructure the NSA more or less own by this point.
IF selinux is used. AFAIK the only one that does is redhat/Fedora.
Even then, the code is 100℅ open source, is vetted, reviewed, and audited. You're even free to modify it. Or not have it altogether.
