unless things massively changed, it was a PITA to rice out OSX 10.5 back when i had it : geektool to run scripts and commands on the desktop was about the tops. you could change the themes, if you spent HOURS messing with the artfile and sartfile things that contained all the raster and vector images that made up aqua.

In terms of ricing there is absolutely no difference in distro, assuming you can get up to date packages and/or that doesn't affect your rice.
The benefits to running say arch over debian or ubuntu is (usually) better packages and easier system to run if you want something more bleeding edge.

Dear vex@vex,
First off, I would like to say your colorscheme doesn't seem too bad, the transparent terminal puts a damper on it however.
Now then, you should change the color of your wallpaper with the render, the darkened effect looks quite the atrocity.
Another tip I'd recommend is to change your bar, it looks terrible with those icons and can be made to look much better.
That is all I have to say and hope my message gets across asap.
