I don't want any bias or info that doesn't apply. I want data and benchmarks for 1080p gaming that shows which is the objectively better card. Ignoring the 3.5gb vram and the overheating and power consumption of and, I'm only worried about which puts out the most frames and consistently.
>>
>>51297497
Get an R9 290 instead
>>
b-stock 970 or a 290 if they can still be found

970 is the better value for 1080p as it can be reliably overclocked to 980 performance and you won't have to deal with AMD's crippled tessellation/bad drivers
>>
just youtube "[game i want to play] r9 390 vs gtx 970 benchmarks"

they're basically the same card. same price, same performance, so it really doesn't matter. you'll find that some games get 2 more fps in one card and other games get 2 more fps in the other card. personally i'd get the r9 390 because moar vram and nvidia is run by anti-consumer kikes.

I was under the impression that nvidia was great for 1080 where the small bus wasn't an issue. The anandtech bench seems to support that idea but like all things its just one site.

I think Op wants more benchmark sites that aren't full shill one way or the other. We all fucking know that fanboys on both sides can't be trusted.

Dont even think about a 970.

I just got one 2 days ago and i have been keked from all my games. Fps in all my games are horrible, i check my gpu usuage and its at 30% when in any game.

I decided to stress test the card and what do you know, everything hits max potential and works beautful ONLY WHEN STRESSED.

I have done everything and then some but with no avail. Im gunna go into bios and change everything to default as i read some guy did that and fix his keked situation.
>>
Got the 390 because power consumtion is a huge deal for me.

I don't play much but want to use my desktop in 144hz without taking a loan for the Nvidia provided power bill.
>>

That is deliberate Nvidia sabotage and nearly only applies to GameWorks titles.
>>
>>51298123
May not be just the card. What's the rest of your specs?
>>
>>51298123
I don't know what games you're playing but you may have gotten a faulty card.

Also, do you play in 144hz?
I have a 144hz monitor and it brought on all kinds of issues. Frame stutter in GTA V, flickering white water in Skyrim, etc. All were fixed by setting frequency to 60hz while playing said games.

Yea i do have an asus 144hz playing mainly CSGO. Couple of my friends that have the fx-8350 are reporting to get 350-450 fps in game while i have my 8320 to their 8350 speed i get 60-180 fps and that flucuates dramatically.

I will be taking my card to a friends house who thankfully has the same card so i will see if this card is also gimped on his pc. I seriously hope it is and a simple RMA will fix this issue.
>>
>>51298643
Something is wrong dude, I get 300-600 FPS on my GTX 970 (depends on the map) and around 280 fps in smoke/fire. Try playing with 60hz and see if that fixes it

Thanks man ill try it out, if it work then ill wait for a driver to come out if not fuck this card.

Do you think that i increased the voltage of my ram to 1.50v (which was stated for the ram) could be limiting the gpu voltage?

If i should RMA should i go with amazon ( where i bought it from and was delivered the next day due to proximity) or go with evga rma?

The only game ive been able to properly benchmark with is the Battlefront beta. R9 390 ran flawlessly.
31% maximum usage under stressful firefights.
Helped keep cpu (fx 8350) usage down to 54%.
Havent noticed any overheating issues.
Streams flawlessly in 60fps .
Will admit that drivers were unreasonably retarded at first (only because beta drivers were out at the time for 390).
Muh 8GB onboard memory and 512-bit tho.
Rendering videos has doubled in speed since my upgrade.

Cant speak for 970 tho.

I felt this way as well. I bought myself a 390, only to find out that one of the games I play with friends, Elite Dangerous, has a game crippling driver issue.

As per AMD website
"[59475] Elite: Dangerous - poor performance may be experienced in SuperCruise mode"

This has been present in their drivers for more than 4 months now. If I had bought an NVIDIA card, I would not be having issues right now. AMD's last stable driver release was 7/28/2015, over 4 months ago. Their latest beta driver still has this issue.

Will I be waiting another 4 months for them to fix their drivers? Will it ever be fixed? Or is one of my games unplayable now because I chose AMD over NVIDIA?

At this point, I took a chance on AMD for the first time in many years and I got completely screwed, all because of their shit drivers. Not only the drivers, but the massive delay between releases.

To me, it looks like the AMD driver meme is not a meme but still reality.

They have to pay a fee to be WQHL or whatever verified and not be "beta" drivers, anymore, so they just let them be, until a major change, or they get a wild hair up their ass, presumably.

AMD beta drivers have always been the "stable" drivers.

About the same

390 is slightly better performing overall, but they compete

970 is in the center of a lot of scandals though, and I had a lot of strange behavior when pushing my 970, not to mention serious coil whine.

I'd get the 390 for sure. I have the MSI 390 8g and it's pretty solidly more powerful than my 970, and has been a better experience on the whole.

In fact I can only really recommend a 970 to anyone who needs one of those SUPER small 970s they make for some reason, and even then it's kind of a hard sell. The 390 is just better. It even overclocks well.

And don't listen to those fucking faggots who tell you to "just get a 290", they are not the same card, and a 290 is not worth your money by comparison

I finally built a new PC several months ago. I went from a core 2 duo 6420 with twin gtx 260 core 216's to a 4770k with an r9 295 x2. I found the r9 on amazon for roughly $600. I would recommend that card all day long. Nice and quiet with its proprietary water cooling, and stays cool under load. Haven't had a problem with it yet. Other games like Total War Rome 2 hated the SLI on the 260's and I would have to disable it to play. Haven't had this problem with the r9 yet.

It's not the GPU son. You have a piece of hardware bottlenecking your machine. A good gaming machine should utilize most of it's GPU. You kucked yourself.

Go sapphire, they OEM for AMD's own line. Also I remember when MSI was junk, and it still is junk, just with flashy paint and gamer heatsinkz.
>>
>>51301110
Actually I can share points here about this.
My case is old and sucks, and had only the 2 case fans that came with it, one 200mm for intake and one 120mm for exhaust.
Put a msi r9 390 8gb there, first day reached about 83ºC after 7h stress test, it was a fucking oven.
So I underclocked an tried custom fan curves and all, improved a bit but I actually hit 90ºC even when underclocked testing "the witcher 3".
So I opened the case, my temps skyrocket down, to 65ºC, from 90, in 10-15sec. Do some more testing, holds there. That brought me to clean up the case, the fans, take out some stuff in between see if I could get intake air better and put another 200mm exhaust fan on top.
Right now:
29-33ºC on idle UPLS/ZeroCore on (~4W)
40-44ºC on low use (watching videos and other 2D app ?) due to card clocking up memory and core fluctuation (not sure if this is normal) (~15-20W).
60ºC steady on load @default 1040/1500mhz(160W-200W)
65ºC crawling very slowly up on load (have to do more testing) @OC 1200/1525mhz (160W-200W).
So, someone with better case fans/airflow can go even lower for sure, no need for meme watercooling, underclocking is fine if you want to shave some degrees down when in desktop use / 2D apps if you don't want full memory speed or something but it's quite irrelevant. Bottom line, card is quite good and better than I expected and all problems came from my own inexperience.

>>
>>51302860
>>51306118

Well, thank you for the advice. Around the net, Sapphire doesn't seem to have as good of a rep from an overclocking standpoint but the temps and reliability seem good.
>>
>>51305905
That's a CPU bottleneck, The GPU has to idle while it waits for the CPU to catch up that why you see such low usage even in demanding games, there are other cases where you would get FPS drops while usage is not even at 99% and neither the CPU is at 99% usage, it happens when there is a timing discrepancy in the game; incorrectly measured time interval and frame queuing or uneven workload between CPU & GPU requires buffering, but which can also raise timing issues, this is probably the cause 99% of the cases where frame rate is below 60, while the GPU and CPU not even reaching 99% usage.

This is causes by the game itself and there is not much we can do but you can try the next;

Go to the Nvidia Control Panel - Manage 3D Settings and mess around with the "Maximum pre-rendered frames" setting.
>>
>>51304396
Windows 10?
>>
>>51306352
Also I forgot to include it could also be you got a faulty card or your PSU, GPU "%" is tied to the TDP number in the BIOS file.
>>
>>51306352
>>51306408
Oh wow thank you very much. That really makes sense and thank you for explaining that! I will try this out. If worse comes to worse i have come to terms with buying a i7 4790. Also i am playing Squad right now and my memory is being used to the full meme 3.5gb on the 970gtx. Is this bad, or is it caused by the cpu?
>>
>>51306671
Memory shouldn't have any major impact in performance because the driver would usually stop filling the card after it fills around 3770mb, after that everything will be going into the pagefile, 256mb shouldn't make a big difference in performance, the 780Ti has only 3GB and it can still keep up with the 970 in games that use more than 3GB, same with AMD cards with only 3GB, they still offer the expected performance in those games.

The problem with the 970 is when the last segmented memory gets written AND read at the same time, which the drive already tries to prevent at any cost, the only way to force the card to go above that it's by using 4K resolution(which already is taxing enough with modern games) and crazy amounts of Anti Aliasing, which would already put any card on their knees just by the lack of raw power.

If you have a 970 I recommend you to modify the BIOS file to get rid of BOOST 2.0 and replace it with your max stable clock and voltage, that way the card won't be having to guess what voltage and clock and such while still can down clock down when it don't needs higher clocks to push 60FPS, like in old games, it also fix the problem where clocks drop by 13Mhz once the cards hits like 65ºC or 72ºC depending on the card model.
>>
>>51306810
Hmmm. Ok so getting rid of the boost 2.0 ill check that out. So do you think i would be better off getting an i7 ontop of that as well?
>>
You can get a 980 for around the price of a 970 on ebay. I got an evga 980 ftw edition for about 50 dollars more than a 970 ftw and have overclocked it so I get a solid 60fps on witcher 3 at 1440p. I get a 3 year extended warranty through evga's second hand program.

On a more serious note, The 390 will last you longer. Games keep consuming more vram, amd drivers are getting a lot better, async support, nvidia gimping (see 970 vs 780 ti)

But then again, the 390 is a big and power hungry beast, if your case or psu aren't enough you would be better off with the 970.

390 should run fine off a 500w psu with a bit of headroom. But I'd say 550w if overclocking.
