Welp, I'm now the proud owner of a chink Denzel Washington. Should be interesting
Is it a scumbag move to gift these to people for the holidays?
There's a $10 that comes with a replica box too. Hilarious.
>>
Todays chink roundup (11/11 sale)
2 usd Timex knockoff
dozens of PRC200 faux chrono knockoffs starting around 2.5
Even more DW knockoffs around the same price, both branded DW and "Geneva"
3.2 usd really hideous IWC (faux quartz) chrono
3.2 / 3.4 usd VC / PP seemingly sterile quartz homages
3.7 usd DIESEL knockoffs
Bagels ranging between 34 and and 50 usd.

I'm guessing you're using them for gifts?
Spending 18 bucks on these shitty watches is a bit of a waste imo. 1 or 2 is more than enough dogshit in any collection
>>
>>51296087
Yes, obviously.
I keep 2 or 3 for myself (different straps) and the other 3 I will just hand over to friends whenever I'm in the mood.

This might sound spoiled but it costed me about €18 to get them shipped here.

Fucking €18. That's less than going to a pub with some classmates costed me yesterday.
>>
>>51296129
where are you from? Costed is not english. The right form in your case is COST

Have you had a look at Anonimo or Precista watches? They've got the same look but a nicer price. While Precista is an "homage", Anonimo is made up of workers that Panerai left behind when they moved from Florence to Switzerland.

>>
What do you guys think of Bulova? Any good?
>>
>>51300425

Best thing would be to go into a shop and get an estimate. My local place offers free estimates. Even if they did need to lubricate the watch and make sure it's running fine, it would cost more than the watch to do. You're better off just buying a new watch.

Huh.
I find it more interesting than a SubC so if I had the (exceptionally large) wrist needed, money and desire for a sports watch so expensive it doesn't make sense to ues it for sports or anything that might damage it and so heavy it's uncomfortable I guess I'd rather have that.

If I just wanted the style though the homages are excellent and rarely above 200usd.
Also reps of the pam318 have significantly better finished movement than the gen. Literally.

Never underestimate the autism of a watch nerd. You should check out the HAQ forum on WUS sometime, they have all kinds of crazy graphs and shit where they plot their watches every single day for months. They cry about daylight savings time because it means they have to stop their watch and change the time every 6 months and it ruins their data.
>>
>>51305818
You'd think with a +/-10s per year spec that'd let you stop giving a shit about accuracy altogether.

Took me a lot of fiddling to get it to work properly. The documentation is pretty hard to read as well but the author of the app said it was for signal analysis first then he turned it into being able to check watch timings, so that makes sense. I used the video he posted to make sense of it.

So I bought it for 200 euroshekels. Anyway it was my fault for purchasing it last Thursday while being drunk. But I'm actually quite happy with it, it looks nice even a few of my friends told me it looks pretty good.

It apparently is a model from the 90s, and after some research and replays from some /wt/ fellas. It probably isn't a franken, but a model made for the European market. They obviously flooded the market with many different models.

What do you guys think, I know it's not the 70s-80s models, and I also thing they look nicer but it's not too bad. Even though I probably spent too much on it.

The German market was big for Poljots in the 90s I heard, so it's likely to be from there. Looks good especially the casing.

Guess it being the dogshit version was the reason there was still NOS of it. You're not the only one who likes the nicer versions of things, this is something /wt/ keeps forgetting a lot.

Lug to lug only really fitting for fatties and Arnie, two crowns sticking out to the left so wherever on you wear it on your wrist, if you bend it you'll stab yourself with it.
Solid gold / platinum is heavy and doesn't add anything to a sport watch, which is so fragile it doesn't work as a sport watch anyway.
Or should it rather be called a pilots watch since it shares so much in common with the 5524G and any pilot ever will wear one at work?

Even Pateks sizes has grown out of reach to look proportional on the average persons wrist.
What's next, a 44mm Aquanaut Offshore?

I love how old tritium lume on the hands darkens at the edges, it really gives it a nice character. Too bad non-radioactive lume doesn't seem to do that, not even the vintage-colored ones.
>>
Why aren't there eco-drive precisionists? Citizen owns Bulova and the main problem with the sweeping second is it eats batteries, so why not combine the best of both worlds?
>>
>>51313401
Wait a sec just for clarification. This watch has tritium tubes?
Tritium is a gas that's why it's put into tubes with a special coat, Tritium then reacts with it and produces a faint glow.

The watch he posted seems to have glowing color hands, I'm pretty sure old watches used another radiating material mixed with the color to produce the glow.
I might be wrong though that's why I post this.

Fun fact, Tritium has a half-life period of ~12 years. Which means it will only glow half the strength it did when first filled into the tubes.
>>
File: speedmaster_tritium.jpg (2 MB, 3504x2336) Image search: [Google]
speedmaster_tritium.jpg
2 MB, 3504x2336
>>51314869
Before tubes there was tritium paint. Don't ask how the gas is mixed into the paint, I'm not a chemist. These will be marked on the dial with either a big T, two small T-s around the "swiss made" or whatever texts or a simple radiation trefoil symbol.

Pic related, an old Speedmaster marked for tritium.
>>
>>51314869
Current watches typically use tritium gas in a tube coated in phosphor or they use superluminova type photoluminescent compounds which are not radioactive.

There are tritium paints, though. It was mostly used in older watches and I don't know if any manufacturers still use it or if it's even legal anymore. They'll usually have a T at the bottom of the dial or they'll say T-Swiss Made-T or something like that. The paint ages and turns yellow over time.

Even older than that is radium-based paint which has a much longer half life but is very toxic and was mostly banned a long time ago.
>>
>>51300033
that is a beautiful fucking watch god DAMN
>>
>>51314972
>>51314979
That's why I posted thank you guys.
When I'm home I will read it up, I'm actually quiet interested now how they mixed it with paint.
>>
>>51315153
Apart from radium and tritium promethium MIGHT have been used, but probably not since the isotope used has like a two-and-a-half year half-life.
>>
>>51315153
Tritium is just an isotope of hydrogen. The glow is off of a phosphor which gets excited by the beta particles. The tritium itself has nothing to do with glowing, it's just a source of beta particles that make the phosphor glow. So you don't need free pure tritium gas in a vial, it can probably be in any solid compound too and then you can mix it in with a phosphor and a binder and whatever other stuff you need to make a paint. I have no idea exactly what the compound is or anything like that, though.

Having the gas in a sealed tube is just safer because it keeps it all contained and the glass blocks the radiation from escaping whereas in paint form once you open up the watch there's nothing containing the tritium and if the paint flakes off or something you could inhale it.

I dont know if somebody has pointed out this yet,but isn't it funny (or sad) how they now made the "wrong" bond nato the "right" one?.
>>
>>51315940
I'm guessing because craig actually wears the grey/black nato in the newer films. Helps that it looks better than the red/green stripes on the old one.
>>
>>51316222
>Helps that it looks better than the red/green stripes on the old one.
yeah pretty sure that's the reason. the "real" bond looks like shit.
>>
>>51315393
Thanks for the good explanation. It does makes sense that it can be in any solid component, I haven't thought about that.
I knew that Tritium is emitting betaray, and that they can't even pass through weak materials. But still, if you would break a tube and inhale it. It would accumulate in your body, and therefore partly destroying DNA which could lead to disease like cancer.
Probably such small tubes used in watches wouldn't be enough, but who knows. It's still safer than Tritium used in paint.
>>
>>51315940
I like it, if I got to choose what strap Bond wore I'd totally have chosen the exact same strap, it's a nice nod to WIS. What did bother me though is that the film mentions Bond's watch having an alarm function when it clearly doesn't.

What I'd love to happen is for the films to drop the blatant product placement and to have some fun, show him wearing an F91W in a scene and see how much the price of the watch inflates, it'd be hilarious.
>>
>>51316362
Of course it does, they no doubt realised at short notice that they needed a strap big enough for the watch to be worn on the outside of a wetsuit, that was the best they could find, a fairly hideous colour combination and not even the right width for the watch.

I need it to stop so I can align the hands properly.

Check the small writing on the bottom and the font of "jubilee" to see if it's original or not. The repainted ones have a different font. Most if them have the sunburst effect painted over totally or partially. Also, the diamond markers are much closer to the center in the repainted ones, the curry painters apparently can't paint domed dials on the edges.

For any /wt/ers in Southern Ontario:

Shane Ede is a really great guy to deal with for watch repairs. My SKX Enhanced has started gaining time wildly since yesterday, he opened it up to take a look, determined it was probably magnetized, de-magnetized it, got the regulation to within +6 to +2 in all positions, buttoned it back up and asked for 10$ for the half hour he had spent with me.

desu, i have no clue about watches, it would be my first one... what do you suggest?

There are 3 types of watches.

1) Quartz; battery powered. Very common and usually on the cheap side. You can usually tell if something is a quartz watch by the seconds hand "gliding" around (no tick tocking). If you want a cheap, reliable, un-fancy day to day watch this is fine.

2) Mechanical; fuckton of gears. It's powered by you winding it every once in a while (anywhere from 1-8 days). Distinct "tick tock" movement of second hand.

3) Automatic; subset of mechanical. Has a fuckton of gears, and you can manually wind it if you want/need to start it, but it also has a rotor which swings around via the motion of your hand so it winds itself throughout the day.

Mechanical and Automatic are the more expensive, dressier, classier ones. They're really marvels of human engineering.

So I guess to put it simply- what do you want it for? Day to day wear with any clothes? Sports/outdoorsy shit? Classy one for formal dressing?
