the early years were pretty terrabad

2002 is when shit was starting to hit the fan
>>
What you don't get through the nostalgia was how shit the technology was.

The reason it was the wild west and normies weren't on it is because it was pretty tricky to use, and there was nothing pretty on it.

dial-up was awful. A screechy slow mess that disconnected every 5 minutes when your mom picked up the phone.
But then it was made better, and easier to use, and normies started wanting a piece. Then smartphones came about and normies could get on it while also doing normie things.
>>
I remember when everyone was using Yahoo!. We gave our IT teacher a funny look one day when he said "use Google" - what a funny name for a search engine.

Have I misunderstood you here? PCs in the late 90s were tricky to use? If that's what you're saying you weren't there.
>>
>>51289421
be glad you missed 'em, trust me
>>
>>51295271
They were tricky to use. Just because you were one of the people who were smart enough to use them doesn't make them tricky to use.
They were still baby-mode easy but that still isn't easy enough for normies.
Normies want iphone level simple.

This

Maybe it's not the wild west days anymore, but it's definitely the cyberpunk days now. Everyone is being spied on, and the only way to hide is in the darknets,

It's just a shame they're only used for CP at the moment. They have so much potential

It's not completely civilized yet. I that suggest you enjoy what is still left and that's quite a lot. Why aren't you embracing the current cyberpunk era? There's never been a greater time than now for cyberpunk.

I honestly didn't know that!
>>
Yup. Trying to troubleshoot problems without the internet or resources was super fun. Or the couple hour drive to get to bookstores large enough to get the information you wanted to learn. Also fun. Or just having BBS that had time limits cause you know resources were scarce. Or writing the for loop in as many ways as you can think of cause libraires didn't exist yet, but it didn't matter anyways cause you needed massive funds to be a software producer anyways. Mailing those disks or finding storefronts wasn't cheap.

At least I held my dick less back then, usable porn was hard to come by

In the late 90's I would go on AOL dial-up and download these things called "pr0gz" which would allow you to spam aol chats with ascii pictures of Bart Simpson or a penis.

Most of them had viruses which fucked my parents computer up multiple times and then aol suspended our account for chat abuse and I just played dumb and parents believed me.

I never got into computer stuff like most of you but for those two years I truly considered myself the major thorn in AOLs side who was bringing them to their knees with my ruthless spamming of ninja turtles in political discussion chats.

I legitimately believed that aol board meetings probably dedicated 60% of their time to identifying and stopping this absolute madman clogging their chats.

My screen name was "L33t3st" and one time I went in some bullshit room called "h4k ch4t - place to chill with other rogues" or something similarly gay, and I spammed something stupid, asked if anyone had a virus I could use to shut down my middle school, spammed some more, got made fun of, held the button down to spam constantly and send blank private messages to everyone in chat. Got immediately kicked and somebody sent me a message with my dad's email used for setting up the account with some vague threat. I turned the computer off, disconnected the modem cord, TOOK THE COMPUTER INTO ANOTHER ROOM, plugged it back in, deleted aol, reinstalled with another of the millions of aol cds in our garage and chuckled to myself thinking "nice try amateur".

I dunno guys, the absolute shit that were forums in late 90s early 00's were what made 4chan appealing in the first place. It wasn't wild west at all but a bunch of power tripping "we take ourselves very seriously" mods. If you wanted shit flinging you were stuck hiding from the high functioning autists in IRC.
Sites were either amateur to the point of uselessness, stick up their ass self serious, early boring corporate endeavors, or just straight porn with no discussion at all.
>>
>>51297252

this, outside of a few communities like NG a lot of the web was normalfagville.
>>
The internet has ben integrated too much with our daily lives.
>>
>>51297664

By 2000 IRC was mostly file sharing; the channels were huge and the OPs were Nazis.
>>
>>51289421
No I did not. I sold PHP scripts and made a decent money for my own expenses as a kiddo. I remember forums falling ,ircs being shut down, people leaving communities.
I was also a scriptkiddie, now that I got older I wonder how in the hell did they not catch me. I guess the wild west protected me.

>>
>>51298944

No CCV numbers needed back then.

You could download a Dos credit card number generator (think it was called "Cardmaster"), I recall it was dated 1994. Never used it, personally, but others said it worked.
