So with intel moving to a tic-toc-toc cycle do you think we'll be able to use the cannonlake 1151 socket 200series chipset processors with the current z170 motherboards like the rog hero VIII or gigabyte gaming 7 with a firmware update?

Trying to decide between getting a 6600k i5 and upgrading at end of life to cannonlake or getting the 6700k i7 and keeping it through another one or two socket changes like my last(current) setup

Currently running
Xeon e5450 with 771-775 conversion mod @4ghz
4gb ddr2 1600 ram
R9 290 oc sapphire tri-x

I know the upgrade will be worth it as my current setup is 2008 tech, literally, but will i be able to upgrade to cannonlake on a z170 board? If not i'll just go i7 now and keep it till its as irrelevant as my e5450 (that can still do bf4 multiplayer at 35fps, playable but not stellar, but damn impressive considering the system)

>tic toc toc
New chips are a tock, m8. A shrinkage is a tick. Broadwell is the tick to Skylake's tock. Kaby is just a refresh, not a tick.

1600 ddr2?

My bad, ddr2 1000 not sure where i got 1600 from

Regardless of the nomenclature, there will be three generations of chips on 1151, skylake, kaby lake, and cannonlake(dieshrink to 10nm)

What i'm wondering is if cannonlake will be useable on z170boards on the market now, or if it will REQUIRE a new chipset to be used. I know my 771 board worked for both the original die size and the companion die shrink, would a z170 board bought today only be good for skylake amd kaby lake or would cannonlake work on it too accordig to past precedence?

I, too, am upgrading to a i76700k from a 2010 era rig. I don't think anyone knows the answer to your question though, dude. Probably too early to tell
>>

but is it safe to say every time there has been a die shrink the old motherboards were able to use the new chips?

I have the same pc (x5470@4
2, r9 290, 8gb) as you, and I've decided to wait for 8 core zen Cpu while skylake will be quite an upgrade id like to go up in both ipc and moar coars also AMD sticks longer to their sockets

nice build, not a huge fan of lit fans, but that's just personal preference.

i already have the 450d case,
g2 1000w psu for infinite future-proofing,
840 evo 250gb ssd (will eventually get a m.2 pcie4x ssd when prices fall and use the 840 for games, downloads etc (i was bottle-necking my download speeds on google fiber due to the hard drive when downloading to a standard drive).
already have pwm fans and a hyper 212 for cooling

i've been waiting for skylake to drop, and with the zen cpu who knows what the specs and performance will be, and when it will be released, they just barely said they even got 14nm to even work so...

>>51272064
If previous Intel releases are any indication, all Skylake, Kaby Lake and Cannonlake will be usable on Z170 motherboards, but will require a BIOS update to run the latter (maybe Kaby as well).
Although, with Zen around the corner, I'm not sure this is the best time to upgrade. Even if you don't want AMD, Zen could make Kaby CPUs cheaper next year.

A socket tic -toc change a year keeps the goyim in fear.

thanks, the reassurance that i needed to hear, i'm sure zen could affect pricing and competition but i've had enough of sata 2, pcie (not two, not three, just pcie x16) usb 2.0, etc
i only get half the throughput on my ssd thanks to sata2, can't use over 2tb hard drives thanks to the motherboard/chipset limitations, etc...

i held out last december to get skylake so that i could reup the processor down the line, maybe add another 16gb ram to the 16gb i'd start with (2x8)

i don't think the max 100 savings would be worth the wait at this point.

cannonlake will be a new architecture.
you can bet your ass it will require new chipsets and new sockets, just because.

>upgrading cpus
Its fine to upgrade from your xeon but it doesnt even matter what to upgrade to anymore. Get a 4ghz i7 and that will be it for about 10 years unless some unexpected technology breakthrough happens.

Also wait at least for zen if you're interested in their 8 core solution. Regardless of that, any 4ghz core i7 will it be haswell, skylake, cannonlake or whatever, will never get old or slow.

Going by Haswell & Broadwell

Broadwell only compatible with Z97 chipset mobos, not Z87

Expect the same, current Z170 chipset mobos will not be forward compatible with Cannonlake while Z270 chipset mobos(Z170 replacement) will be
