To upgrade or not to upgrade is the question.
I've been rocking a 2500k since 2011 and was pretty content with it (had it paired up with a 6870) until recently. I am now getting stuttering in games and just not very satisfactory frame rates. I put in a 970, and while boosting the over frames, I still had stuttering, and really bad coil whine (I RMA'd) it.
I'm now at a loss at what to do. Could my frame rate problems be related to the CPU? Mine was manufactured in Costa Rica and I never got it stable 4.0+ on a 212+. Under load, underload it goes up to 60C. This is still well within thermal limits, right?
What to do /g/?
>>51267470
get a proper cooler and oc it to 4.8
also >>>/g/sqt
so you went from 6870 to 970, do you realise how retarded that was?
I haven't been up to date the past few years over hardware but I can't believe the i5 2500k is still a beast of a cpu and that the price hasn't changed at all
>mfw I bought a 2500k and a gigabyte z68 mobo for 200 bones during Black Friday in 2012
>>51267903
what do you mean the price hasn't changed? I bought mine for like $230 and the used eBay price is now ~100. It definitely went down.
so how are you liking your 2500k in current day gaming? do you feel the itch to upgrade?
>>51267953
>eBay
Cmon senpai
It performs quite nice desu and I haven't done any overclocking. I'm notice of a gamer - the only game I play is Smite which is moderately intensive and I'm able to run it on the highest settings without any lag/jitters
I bought a Samsung SSD which came with the assassins creed game. It hasn't been released and I've never played AC before so I'll see how my rig will preform
Also funny I also have a 2500k and a 6870 card like op
>>51267953
should mention I do kind of want to upgrade my video card but I don't know what to
as long as it has two dvi that can enable 120hz on both monitors I'll be alright
>>51268091
I am op. yeah, the 6870 was a great value back in the day, gave you like 90% performance of the 6950 for $100 less or something.
Well anyway folks, there's a i5 4590 on sale right now for 150. should i upgrade? i need someone to do the thinking for me. im not good at this.. pls
welp.. last try.
there's a sale going on right now for a locked i5 4590 for $150.
4590 from 2500k: worth it:? it's gonna amount to 300 once u factor in the mobo. might be able to recover 100 by selling the 2500 on eBay.
>>51268614
definitely not
>>51268915
okay! thank you!
Don't do it. I just upgraded everything except my 2500k and mobo. Got a new cpu cooler, overclocked it for the first time, and shit is cash with a 390
>>51267470
>I put in a 970
>>51269337
wat is so funny? i had to RMA the thing because of coil whine. are you suggesting that buying it in the first place was a mistake?
>>51267470
I recommend trying the 970 again; you shouldn't be getting any stuttering with that.
A new CPU won't help much these days. If you did upgrade though, you won't see that stuttering anymore but I don't think it would be because of the upgrade. Check your process list and see if there is anything running in the background that taking up resources. Do a tune up and clean the registry while you are at it.
A CPU upgrade nowadays will give you a 10-20% boost, but nothing to write home about. It won't be like how it was for me when I went from a Q6700 to a 3770K. Even if it don't cost that much, I honestly don't think it's worth the time to upgrade at this point. I would personally wait 'till m.2 SSDs and DDR4 ram becomes cheap before I would upgrade. Then you'll see across the board improvements.
>>51269359
Oh boy, you must be new here.
>>51269388
>you shouldn't be getting any stuttering with that.
if he forevermore plays at 1366x768
>>51269392
i come from /pol/, so yes, i don't know /g/ stuff. can someone enlighten me?
>>51269388
>you shouldn't be getting any stuttering with that
On a 970, yes he should.
Op, get any nvidia card but the 970, or go with amd.
>>51269410
The 970 is 3.5gb normal speed vram and 0.5gb running at 1/8 speed.
This makes it stutter when drivers don't force the game to use less than 3.5gb.
>>51269397
Quit trying to troll the newfag here, the 970 is fine for 1080p and a little above. I got a friend of mine the Gigabyte 970 and it's kicking enough ass to make him happy. 0.5gb of slower VRAM really doesn't fucking matter.
>>51267470
First shitpost on my new pc.
Upgraded from a core2duo 2ghz to a Haskwell Xeon 3.2ghz E31225v3. Never looking back
>>51269447
>>51269460
Okays. I'm going with another radeon again. I'll look for a 390 deal. if shit starts stuttering again then im gonna be very angry. i just want to play vidya at a stable frame rate.
>>51269467
>1080p and a little above
only hipsters WUXGA anon
>>51267470
4ghz at 60c?
That is some bad cpu lottery mate
>>51269460
Also, false advertising about the l2 cache and rops iirc.
>>51269467
It's not a card that will last long.
Gta v runs on 4gb vram
Dying light: 4gb
Shadows of mordor: 6gb
The evil within: 4gb
The simple fact is that games will keep using more vram, and the gtx 970 will be obsolete by the end of 2016. A 390 or gtx 980 at least, would last longer.
>>51269524
i dusted the fuck out of my PC and installed a 212 with thermal paste. shit is 40s idle and 60 under load when overclocked. now im running back at stock. it's not fair.
>>51269561
hmm thank you for providing that info for me. im going with either the 380 or 390. im honestly not that much of a graphics whore. the 380 seems good enough for me. im concerned about the 390 heat output shit reminds me of the Fermi cards. im scared.
>>51269626
380 is a pretty good budget card, but make sure you get the 4gb version. 2gb just isn't enough anymore.
>>51269655
gotcha. will get the 4gb. thank you, friendo.
>>51269673
Could wait up a week or two for 380x tho
>>51269711
Isn't the 380x $250?
4gb 380 can be had for $170 when I checked a few weeks ago.
>>51269803
It should be around 220-250 , but yeah I didn't really know that 4gb models can be had for 170$ , just go with 380 than.
