For the mathematical part, except for academic research, I don't do it myself : for my personal use, I took someone else's idea (like the sorting algorithms, digital filters for when I deal with real data in arduino DIY shitty stuff and the like) but I do implement these mathematical idea to solve problems.
Also, I script a lot for my personal use : download the images of a 4chan thread, rippoff some porn pictures on internet galleries, crontab and other productivity shit. In these case, I don't give a shit about math and being optimal. I code like an indian spaghetti code and it does the job.
