The only two clamshell/flip phones I know of that boast any kind of modernity to them are the Wine and the Samsung G9198

As I live in the US, I don't have easy access to either of these. I'm strongly considering getting one of these as an early Christmas present for myself, though, because I really like the idea and I also miss my old Blackberry Pearl Flip, but it's so outdated I can't even use it for most things.

Does anyone here have any experience with these phones, buying them, importing them, getting them to work with
T-Mobile
or anything else that might be helpful for me should I choose to spring for one?

Also, discussion of modern flip phones or other anachronistic phones is encouraged, including phones with modified cases or aftermarket accessories.

Oh, and sorry for not using spoilers properly. I'm a filthy crossposter from infinitychan /g/.

Feel free to hate me, but also I sincerely would like some discussion of Android Flip Phones.

Now google your shitty ass Tmobile frequency in that trash country of yours and see if its compatible with this

GSM
>Quad Band (850/900/1800/1900MHz)
UMTS
>Dual Band (900/2100MHz)
4G
>Cat 4 (150/50Mbps) Penta-Band (800/900/1800/2600 MHz)

That actually might be a bit of a downgrade from the 4 year old phone I have now, at least in terms of RAM which is important for doing more than one thing on the phone EVER

>>51254131
>>51254238
I posted the Wine in the OP so I know of its existence, I just don't feel informed enough to spring for it right this very now.

I was hoping that someone would have personal experiences to share rather than just an amazon link.
>>
>>51251252
Someone needs to get a petition or something going to make these kinds of phones more available in the US, they're ore comfortable to use.

Failing that, I guess people will just have to use headsets.

Now to find a good price...
>>
>>51256699
$200 all over eBay.
>>
>>51256713
And that's before taxes and import duties.

It certainly doesn't seem like a $200 phone to me.
>>
>>51256761
~$230 total for me in the US.
>>
What are some other $200 phones on the market right now for comparison?
>>
>>51256954

This article pretty much covers all the ones worth mentioning:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/08/11/best-android-smartphones-under-200-2015/?gbmsl=5

They're all probably preferable to the Smart in one way or another, but if you really want a "modern" flip phone the Smart is your only good option.

Here they are. All 5 of them.

It seems I have a bit of a dilemma, then.

For the price, it doesn't seem to hold up to other phones in terms of specs.

But on the other hand, it's the only good flip phone out there right now, and it's still an upgrade from the current phone that I have (I bought it for $60 on ebay)

I'm sure I could get quite a few years out of it, and I don't see any new flip phones making it out here to the US any time soon.

This may end up coming down to a coin flip after I get my next paycheck.
>>
Looks like the G9198 just launched in China this past week, apparently sporting a Xiaolong 808 hexcore SoC, 2GB RAM, and Android 5.1.1

>>51257141
I'm definitely not looking for the latest and greatest, newest and bestest.

Functional and cost effective without being a huge downgrade from my Samsung Galaxy S2 is all I need.

Still, I hope that this trend starts to catch on and we get more phones that are in different shapes, sizes, and varieties than just that nasty iPhone slim-brick nonsense that we've had for the past decade.
>>
>>51257125
Yeah, it really comes down to how important the form factor is to you. I was comparing those phones to the Smart myself, but I really wanted a flip and specs are honestly irrelevant if you just need to call, text, browse, and use basic apps.
>>
>>51257172
Yeah just figured i'd toss it out here since it's the only flip-phone thread currently on /g/
>>
Seeing LG Wine Smarts online for cheap as fuck. $200 US. Seems like a no brainer if you really want a flip smartphone. Personally I'd just go for a lightweight bar-shape smartphone like the S4 mini or Xperia SX.

Like I said in the OP, this isn't all about me.

Let's talk about flip phones.

>>51257187
>specs are honestly irrelevant if you just need to call, text, browse, and use basic apps

image related is pretty much the extent of what I use my phone for in terms of processing power.
>>
>>51257294
>Let's talk about flip phones.

I can understand people missing a physical keyboard.

I cannot understand anyone who says they miss flipphones
>>
These look pretty dope; I always liked the flip-phone formfactor but even at 200 bucks, what's the point unless you reeeeaaally want a flip-phone. The specs are awful. 4gb ROM 1gb RAM? Those are the specs of my 2012 shitphone and 4gb ROM is a pain to deal with. I'd love to dick around with one, but not for 200.

Is it really just the form factor that people are drawn to?
>>
>>51257336
Yeah, something about the form factor appeals to people. Not sure what else there is to it. Who the hell dials numbers manually these days? It's all about huge contact lists imported from Google, Skype and Facebook.
>>
>>51257336
>Is it really just the form factor that people are drawn to?

Yes.
>>
>>51257336
thats what the new G9198 is for, 2GB RAM, he core SoC, 16GB ROM, 5.1.1 android, etc.

problem is that one will be a lot more than $200.
>>
>>51257336
Expandable by up to 32gb with microSD, at least.

>>51257294
I'm sure blackjack would run fine, but I honestly have no clue what the rest of those are.
>>
>>51257429
>but I honestly have no clue what the rest of those are

Two are to help me with learning Korean, which ironically is where this phone is from. Too bad I'm too impatient to keep to my studies.

The others are just... games.
>>
>>51257459
I doubt you'd have trouble running any of them. You can always return the phone if it doesn't work out.
>>
>>51257544
>You can always return the phone if it doesn't work out.

Yeah. To Taiwan. What a hassle.
>>
>>51257594
I really doubt you'd struggle to run any of those except maybe the weeb game, and even that might run ok because the smartphone's screen is tiny and barely has to push any pixels.
>>
As an app developer, I will laugh in the face of anyone who complains that apps don't work right on do phones. There's no way I'll put in extra time to support your bullshit form factor.

Seriously though, I can't even find a G9198 seller.

>>51257753
The LG Wine and the Samsung phone are both Korean, not Japanese.

And the other one mentioned in this thread is Chinese.

>>51257648
I don't think anyone asked for your smart-ass opinion you self-righteous kek.
>>
>>51258023
I've been following smart flip-phones for about two years. I know this; I mentioned Kyoex because Sharp Aquos K which is similar specced to the Wine.

except it costs twice as much!
