>>

Not RAID, just creating a spanned disk.

If you are running windows open up disk management. Right click on one of the drives you want to span, click extend volume, it should then open up a wizard that lets you select other drives with free space that you can select and combine with the other drive to create a single spanned disk. So it assigns it a single drive path (in my case the I: drive).

I just keep adding in more HDDs to that spanned volume because I can't control my anime downloading habits.
>>
>>51247710

LTO3 tapes costs nothing and they hold 800GB of compressed data. LTO4 holds 1.6TB.

Here's some more deets on it. I'm using 7x WD Red 6TB drives in RAID 6.

And also have a RAID 1 cache array sitting on top with 2x 120GB Kingston SSDs in it.

The SSD cache works surprisingly well, reads hit the cache 60% of the time, despite the array being 25TB in size.

What a fine thread.

- At the moment I intend to just have any bigger storage in my PC with win8.1 installed on it where I could have more than >2TB space.
- My assumption is to have at least 3-4 HDDs and create RAID5 on them. Therefore any HDD failure will not destroy my storage.
- Mobo is ASRock extreme6 z97

I would like to ask couple of question regarding HDDs:
What kind of size has currently the best price per terabyte these days?
Is there any difference if I make RAID5 from OS site rather than from my motherboard configuration?
Any issues if I intend to encrypt such partition? Or would be better to keep encrypted containers inside?
It is said that if HDDs has less platters the better as there is less things that could get broke? Taking this on account what models should look into?
A brief check on newegg mentioned HDDs for CCTV. Is that some gimmick or does it serves its purpose? Could I use them?

To continue. Last time I've bought HDDs was couple of Seagate Barracuda 2TB. Despite the opinions I might say they are durable. The only got damaged was because it dropped from 1 meter on the floor.
Then I remember HDD prices going up, because of the flood in Taiwan(?) where WD created most of the disks.

Now today I am absolutely lost. There are 3,4,6 TB HDDs with variety of WD, HGST, Hitachi, Seagate.

Is there any guide explaining, because digging through the offers is surely confusing.
>>
>>51250592
Just buy Seagate, there's nothing wrong with these ;-)
>>
>>51250592
Any big brand is fine, but avoid Seagate like the plague. They are genuinely garbage drives.
>>

I have a shitty seagate on my laptop (wich is old too)- 256 gb

But then I store everything on my home server. It has some IDE disks I found, I think they are Maxtor and WD. In total, 400 GB

And a Toshiba external 1 TB in the same server.

Thats my penis network drive

D - personal stuff, multimedia (music, movies)
E - games, downloads, more multimedia, i don't even know what's in there anymore..
F - portable HDD, backup for personal stuff from D
G - portable HDD, used for temporary files, transfer between PCs, etc

I like that no one responds. It forces me to use search engines.

I've foound some particular site regarding the matter of price per terabyte:
https://edwardbetts.com/price_per_tb/internal_hdd/
And after skipping refurbs AND infamous Seagate.

It seems that there is a very little difference between 3,4,5 TB. So I guess if I intend to stack some of those I should go for 3TB then.
