About to do a clean install and have been out of the game for a few years.
Do people still use MPC-HC or have VLC/MPV gotten better by now?

mpc-hc is good, mpv is good. I use mpv now because I don't really see a difference between the two but both are fine choices.
vlc is as much of a garbage as always.

I'm using MPV and it's great as always.
VLC still absolutely rapes battery life on whichever OS its used on.

I use Potplayer with MadVR, its nice.
Will switch to MPV when it has a good GUI for playlists.

I still use MPC-HC + madVR + external LAV filters(they're even bundled with MPC now) + DirectVobSub. It works, what I do now that I couldn't do years ago is use NNEID chroma upscaling and image doubling with my cúck card.

For real though, I want a 1440p monitor with *sync and at least a 120Hz, but it would be wasted on a 970. I'd rather wait for prices to lower down and splurge everything on Greenland or Pascal. Besides, I'm going Zen or *-E next year with NVMe SSDs, my wallet is ready with anticipation.

I got used to using mpv but it requires a lot of configuration. Once that's done, you don't ever need to care about it anymore, except for updating youtube-dl or some shit.
I use both MPC-HC and VLC.
VLC has more features and better scaling (stretching the video to full screen).
And the best slow/fast-motion playback of any other player (great for porn).
But if the video is already in 1080p then MPC-HC seems to have slightly better image quality with better contrast...
But maybe I just need to change some setting in VLC to get the same?

I can share with you my config for mpc-hc that was bundled with K llite codec pack if you want.
It has proper settings for codecs, audio, cropping,controls and madvr.

I only use VLC for livestreamer, it seems to be the fastest video player to open streams with. mpv doesn't even work correctly and mpc-hc takes a while.

As I said, it's the best for slower/faster playback.
It also has a few other useful features.
I know it's a meme for the cool kids to hate on VLC, because it's mainstream and even normies use it.
But objectively it's a very good video player.

I just have this bias against it since I used to use it when it was horse shit. It still builds font cache every now and then which is hilarious. But yeah, it has gone a long way and is a very good player, but not the best.
I use VLC for videos and foobar 2k for audio. People love the VLC hating meme, but it supports everything and I've never had a single issue with it.

if you have menu on top then view -> hide menu
then right click -> view -> frame only

ctrl + 0 toggles between menu+ title bar, title bar no menu and frame only
