So /g/ I just got my first batch of Macaroni & Cheese from my brand spakin' new Amazon Dash button, which button should I buy next?
http://www.amazon.com/b?node=10667898011
>>
I just got the Gatoraid button. You must get that one.
>>
Just hack your amazon dash button so it buys dragon dildos.
>>
>>51238501
are the low calorie ones normally available with prime? it costs more to ship them right now than it does for the product itself

>$4.99

you'd think they'd give these out for free in hopes of actually getting people to adopt this.
>>
>>51241398
you get $4.99 off first order
>>
why not just walk down the block to the local store when you need laundry detergent?
>>
>>51241398
Give it out for free and all the hardware hackers will "buy" a hundred to cannibalize for parts. Price is to deter freeloaders.

Plus you're credited for the price of it with your first purchase, so it is effectively free for people who actually use it.
>>
what's a dash button?
>>
>>51241467

Literally "Push button receive bacon"
>>
>>51241467
In ten words: Button set to order one thing and one thing only.

In more words, and to answer all the common questions:
it's a button to order things you frequently use, but infrequently buy, toilet paper, laundry detergent, big ass box of granola bars, etc. So you're doing laundry, and notice you're running low on Tide. you're not going to stop to run to the computer and place the order, and not everyone carries their phone all over the house ... and even then they're not going to pull out the phone just to place an order. Everyone just makes a mental note to order more detergent, then forgets.

You stick this thing on the washer, and when you notice you're running low, hit the button, and Tide is added to your Amazon cart. You still have to complete the checkout process, and the button is disabled until delivery is complete, so if your friend has one, you can't be a dick and push it fifty times.

The fuck happened to just buying more when you go to the grocery store? Are Americans really so fat and lazy that they can't go to a freaking superstore anymore? Like fuck! I'm in freaking Canada, it gets to -20°C here often, and yet I still go to the store to do weekly shopping. The fuck is wrong is with you faggots?!?!

You know the movie "Wall-E"? Yeah, at this rate, that's what the states will look like in 10 years, minus the cool robots.

Fucking Christ.

I eat kebabs and burgers on the daily and still keep myself under 90 kg / 180 lbs? just by walking to stores and around the city, americans are lazy gluttonous pieces of shit desu
>>
>>51241791
this, and Idiocray

if they'd let me make the button order whatever I told it to though. Or even make it choose an item from my wishlist under a set dollar amount, so I'd get magical presents
>>
>>51241441
i got the mac and cheese button (to be honest it was just a meme purchase) but I could see how it'd be useful for busy housewives. amazon delivers at ridiculous speeds (in my city at least) so it's pretty much push button, get mac and cheese -tier future shit>

>51241598
>You still have to complete the checkout process
there's an option to disable that I think. i'm in an single apartment so no issues of other people messing with MY mac and cheese button

>>51241658
>Amazon ads you place around your house.
nah, I'm 100% the ad is for the company. that's how they're able to make them so cheap - subsidization from ad revenue

>>51241806
like I said I did it for the meme, but there are ones for like baby diapers and pet food that would be really convenient for moms

>>51241791
>on technology
>mad at technology
come on dude I ordered a button I could press for mac and cheese and I got mac and cheese
>>
>>51241842
What on a Amazon can a person buy that's $2.00 or less, free shipping and useful? I don't see them letting anything more than $2.00 if they ever do that.
>>
>>51241880
Great, I hope you enjoy your Mac and cheese. I really do. But would it not be faster to just walk/drive over to a store and buy some? I'm sure it'd be quicker than Amazon.

Also, I use a car/transit to go to shopping. That's technology. I'm not mad at technology. I just think k people are getting far to lazy. You'd have gone at least neutral on your calories if you'd gone and walked in the store to pick some up yourself. Shit you can even drive and gain only like 50 calories after eating a bowl.
>>
>>51241842
I have prime, and was thinking more like a $30 limit for and it just plucks something and sends it to me
>>
>>51241937
If you want to eat mac & cheese now, you go to the store. If you notice your shelf that's usually full of mac & cheese is down to 4 boxes, you hit the button and by the time you're down to that last box, you get a new shipment.

Does everyone need this? Not at all.
>>
>>51242051
Sounds like the worst case of western decadency.
>>
>>51242062
Deal with it.
>>
>>51238302
>there's one for ziploc bags
i thought people reused those
>>
>>51238302
I fail to see the reason why these exist instead of just having a way to add things to a quick buy page on the website/app.
>>
>>51242308
Because normal people don't carry their phones all over the house or drop what they're doing to run to the computer to order razors.
>>
What the fuck? What a useless thing. What happens if some little shit runs up and pushes the button 50 times when you aren't looking? What happens if you hit it by accident? There's a reason shopping online has a bunch of prompts asking if you're sure you want to buy the item. One click buying stuff is dangerous.
>>
>>51242340
>Because normal people don't carry their phones all over the house
By some strange turn of events I've apparently found myself in an alternate dimension where people aren't glued to their phones 24/7.
>>
>>51242213

By default, you receive a push notification/email to confirm the order. You can change the settings to allow directly ordering with a press. I assume there's a cooldown on the button too.

>>
>>51242391
Seriously has anyone tried? Would be great to have those little suckers all over the house but not order shit at evil amazon, instead just add items to your electronic shopping list for the next time you head to your local store.

tl;dr Are they hackable?
>>
>>51242308
the idea is that you can hide it in your cupboard behind all of your mac and cheese. When you use the last box, the button then becomes visible. You can then hit the button. Amazon will deliver more mac and cheese to your doorstep. Never a miscommunication.

It allows you to instantly* stock up on common items without having to add them to a list and go to the store. Honestly, I'd have one for toilet paper. When I'm on the last roll, then I hit the button and I'm good to go.
>>
>>51241598
>>51241658

wait, how does this work, does your pc need an external device that scans the house for pressed buttons? has it got wi-fi? how does your shopping chart registers the item when you press a button?
>>
too bad there is no "press button receive beer" dash available, that would be the best shit ever
>>
>>51242935
NO. They are not hackable.
Don't bother trying or even searching.
You won't find anything on the web. There's nothing out there.
Amazon Dash is not hackable, you can't get it to do anything Amazon didn't intend.
You can't repurpose its micro controller.
You can't repurpose its microphone.
Don't think about trying.

I've been to several, with friends from University, and yes there are people there who know a lot about security and how to break it, there are a lot of people who know how to repurpose hardware in order to get things working in a different way. not every hacker is a 1337 >maymey kiddo who LOICS a bank every friday after school. But I met a few guys who, with a simple card-hack, added £90 to my London Oyster card

>>
>>51243805
not sure if it's possible anymore, since the Oyster card is encrypted nowadays, but back in '07 I believe it was, these guys had a card reader that could read the entries of the card and as they told me they altered the stored balance number. however the card got blocked pretty soon after it was altered, but still had a day of free travel in london.

I know it's possible to do this for other transportation cards, like the Dutch OV card or Swedish SL Access cards
