I knew it: young adults who spend all their time with tech generally have no idea how to use tech.

http://time.com/3844483/millennials-secrets/

>millenials overwhelmingly don't know how to compose emails, use Excel, or even Google search correctly
>they have a hard time understanding anything that isn't tapping a button in an app
>>
WOW
People have a hard time doing things they're not familar with!

STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES!
>>
Who the fuck had to use spreadshits extensively while growing up ?
And the whole email part is confusing me.
Is it saying that the new generation can't write a letter ?
Or click "send email" instead of the "send email" equivalent icon ?

Nothing has changed.
Most people have never needed a computer for all of recorded history.
Even today, most people still don't need a computer when all they ever do with their phone is consume media and facebook.

Tech literates and tinkerers were always, and always will be a minority.

This. Young people only acquired a reputation for being natural computer whizzes because computer savvy young people were the first to adopt personal computing.

Kids nowadays are consumers, not producers. They wait for things to happen to them, instead of being the one doing those things.

There isn't a whole lot to google searches other than looking for "specific phrases" NEAR keywords at site:whatever.com

I sometimes do that because the "corpus" of human-made questions in forums is huge.

Taking technology and making it palatable for the average consumer is perhaps the most cash-cow scheme ever devised. It's shekel paradise dear goyim.
>>

Probably a set of keywords rather than a sentence

"Find a restaurant that serves Italian food that isn't expensive" vs
"restaurant italian inexpensive"

The problem is that google switched their engine to fit what most people typed; natural language processing. Keyword search is either the same, or sometimes even worse than natural language.

most humans are not inclined toward problem-solving of the technical nature.

our brains are made mostly for socializing; we effectively have to repurpose and reengineer our connectome to be competent at problem solving in anything that isn't figuring out and responding to the emotions of others.

unless they're having their hand-held until they commit the fundamentals to rote, most people will not pick up technical skills on their own.

Wow no shit. If you want them to be proficient in Excel and Outlook then put that as a requirement and ask about it in the interview.

I am always on the Internet but am too lazy to learn even though I have a whole plethora of knowledge in front of me.

just quit looking at it as this huge insurmountable task.

teaching yourself calculus on khan academy sounds hard, but it's not hard to commit to looking at one video and doing one exercise a day. if you do that simple task every day for a year, you would literally go through khan academy's entire catalog of math exercises from counting to partial differential equations.

I worked in tech support for a MAJOR cell company for many years. I was shocked to learn how many 16 to 22 year olds had no hardware technical knowledge. They were very familiar with apps but were floored with doing something as unimaginable as removing a battery from an Android phone (99% of most technical fixes, frozen etc) It would turn into a ten minute fiasco just for them to comprehend what a battery is. I had a lot of them call completely baffled as to why their new cell phones were dead and then learn that they had to actually charge them. "What's a power cord? You mean I have to plug it into the wall?"

Wat. That analogy is poor.

>Memeposter doesn't know how to make an analogy despite typing WORDS in the English language!

The disparity in technical skill between consuming media and performing a google search is much smaller than driving a car and installing an engine.

A more appropriate analogy would be:
>Generation X doesn't know how to use the turn signal despite driving everywhere!

This is where I find computer usage analysis dumb.
People using the computer aren't "using the computer".
They are doing whatever people did 20 years ago, the computer has just taken it over as a technical medium.

>chatting on skype, etc
Talking on the phone.

>listening to music
Listening to CDs/gramophone discs.

>watching youtube
Watching shitty television.

They haven't changed what people are doing. People are just doing it on different devices.
Using a computer today doesn't make you super computer literate just like using the phone didn't make you a telecommunications engineer in the mid 80s.

I think it is great that computer savy now means being able to sign up for twitter with a fake name.
I also think it is great that we stopped parenting poor kids so middle class kids can get ahead.
Who cares if we leave the stupid behind?
If they can't figure out things on their own then they deserve to be left behind.
Since we can't legally kill the retards we can force them into poverty and stupidity and they won't even care since we have enough movies, video games and mongolian cave paintings to last a life time.
It might hinder scientific research as things that doesn't directly makes average people "feel better" is now seen as irrelevant and hard to get funding for.
So now we have engineers who graduate in game maker and office workers who cannot use excel. Is it really that much of a shock to you people?
