Screw your shitty desktop or headphones thread, let's talk about some ACTUAL technology.

HOW THE FUCK DOES PIC RELATED WORK

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_K10fX9DSY#t=68
>>
Magnets holding the two body pieces together and for moving the head around, some sort of spinning mass in the center of the sphere to propel it? Somewhat educated guess.
>>
you can build a lot of things with enough money
>>
>>47570508
How do those work?
>>
>>47570419
it has wheel inside the head that track on top of the main body "ball" as it rolls on the ball it shifts the mass and it starts to "fall" in that direction. Gyroscopes help adjust the speed of the wheels to keep the head in the same axial location and keep the movement of the ball underneath going.

Its just like a segways function.
>>
>>47570508
that could work but it is needlessly complex and power hungry i would think. My idea is much simpler, but also has the issue of the head not being firmly attached to the body

Magnets? How the fuck do they work?
>>
>>47570569
Look at the Sphero, it's a small spherical toy with the basics of what I'm talking about. ILM easily has the cash to improve the R&D on such tech, and BB-8 is considerably larger.
>>
>>47570858
yeah, but the actual movement of the device is rather jerky and imprecise to be handled inside the main ball : and the in the videos for the robot in motion in the movie there is a bouncing of the head that would not be possible on a levitated head platform its not smooth enough.

They don't have to be neodymium holding the head on, some bounce can be possible. Purely hoping for the head to not simply bounce off seems unlikely.

Someone else seems to share my hypothesis and actually drew up a diagram. Pic related.

shitty MSpaint rendition

I'm thinking magnets.

this

>wheel inside the head that track on top of the main body "ball"
plus magnets for bounce handling
>>
>>47570992
>>47571024

Confirmation they read XKCD ?
>>
>>47571045
I think in BB-8's case, going with this design leaves it too top heavy, the motors would likely be constantly adjusting and wasting power.

Yeah, thinking about it, The stage BB8 tilted its head and stayed put, so there must be some counter in the large body. Fuck knows, MAGNETS.
>>
>>47571102
on soft terrain/clean floor most probably. On those desert scenes I donĀ“t thik so because of traction.

its capable of spinning the ball on the spot though.
does the head have enough mass to spin the ball?
>>
>>47570526
electric motors controlled by a PIC.

nah it's too complex for you to get it. IT IS MAGIC IT IS FUTURE! WOOO!
>>
would there be any advantage at all to having a robot with this sort of design?
Also I'm seriously worried it will be the next Jar-jar.

But why does it stay in the same spot while tilting its head so far in a direction like pic related if its "like a segway"
>>
>>47570419

look at 1:05 there is a body rotation (yaw) which is not possible with a design like the xkcd sketch

although it is very probably the bulk of it

i would guess there is a reaction wheel in there too

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_wheel

like the cubli

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_6p-1J551Y

anyway i dont know why all theese people are pissing their pants .. there are much better / weirder/ cleverer robots out there ..

http://www.researchgate.net/profile/Annan_Mozeika/publication/224091191_The_first_steps_of_a_robot_based_on_jamming_skin_enabled_locomotion/links/02e7e52ea7f5b20c8b000000.pdf

fuck film sets and their shitty tech
>>
>>47571302

because its centre of mass is near the bottom like a weeble and its head is made of light plastic
>>
>>47571236
must have weight in the ball that shifts too
>>
>>47571311

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbqHERKdlK8

much more interesting.. and simple (sort of) ..but brilliant
>>
>>47570419
>pneumatic 16" solid titanium nigger cock inside the sphere
>head has a cock receiving socket on the bottom
>cock+socket combo acts as a neck during normal operation
>cock rapidly penetrates the head socket once per rotation of the sphere at the precise time its aligned with the socket
>retracts just before going out of alignment during spin and repeats this process to keep the head moving and in place
>sphere has a cock like this every two square inches allowing it to turn any which way and still keep the head in place
>it can also shoot these cocks at high velocities as a last resort in combat or extend them all at once like spikes and run over people
>>

i imagine there is a heavy mass inside the ball motors and maybe a gyro
the head might be magnetized with wheels, and all the sensores a robot needs...
the mass inside needs to be heaver than the head for stability
>>
>>47571462
>the mass in the ball is the battery
>the wheels on the head are conductive and carry the power and motor control signals
>>
For slow moving things like that yeah you can use a real one (however it works). But for that fast moving shot like OP's pic it is 100% cgi
>>
>>47570419
Gyroscope inside allows it to balance.
>>
>>47571311

Good night and god bless all you faggots. I do not understand the world around me.

Walking, jumping spinning cubes. GG
>>
>>47570508

Theyre using magentic servos.
>>
>>47570992
Why wouldn't you just use the webcam on the eeepc?
