Why are PCs still stuck with DVDs ?
>>
Blu-ray players arent cheap enough and the standard in all PC's yet I guess
>>
Because downloads.
They could release it on Blu-Ray (even then it'd still require two discs), but only a handful of people have a BD-player on their computers, while everyone who has a disc drive in their computer, has a DVD drive.
>>
>>47433922
I have 1 DVD reader,1 DVD burner and 1CD burner on old P4,and DVD burner on newish hardware.
I cant remember when i used them for the last time even for reading dvd.Seriously i think i stoped using physical media back in 2007
>>
>>47433922
>Why are PCs still stuck with DVDs ?

Because mechanical mediums long have no place in there.
Which a company that has to stream data from the drive for the game to run 'ala fucking PSX can't possibly know about.
>>
because the PC has moved beyond the need for primitive discs?
>>
>>47433922

>>
>>47434057
This. Why the fuck would anyone still use these?
>>
because everyone fell for the digital distribution meme and didn't buy a bluray drive
>>
>>47433922
wtf are you talking about I haven't used a dvd for the last 5 years or so and I'm still buying games like never before. In fact my computer doesn't even have an optical drive.

They're cheap now, but they'll never become ubiquitous on the PC because everything is going digital and most PC users have no use for a higher capacity optical media format.

It's only there for legacy support at this point.

>>
>>47435327
Not true. Just make sure not to follow any forum posts from 2008 suggesting unetbootin or other trash
>>
I got a USB external DVD drive along with a couple internal dvd drives, as I do computer repairs and often run into old shit that don't boot properly from thumb drives and shit but run fine on internal/external

I also prefer burning and DVDs when I give people things, so that I won't loose USB flash drives when fuckers don't return them or return them riddled with viruses.
>>

There was this service that allows you to buy digital copies of movies.

Wrong
A. Blue ray is cheap
B. Windows 8.1 doesnt have support for blue ray
C. Digital download killed everything before a new standard cpuld come around

What he should have said is Windows 8 does not come with a Blu-ray license to decode Blu-ray movies, it comes with a DVD decoding license. (or at least Windows 7 did, and it didn't have Blu-ray support either)
>>
>>47435780
There are still services that allow it, but they're mostly shitty. Sony lets you download digital copies of movies on the PS3 (and presumably PS4?) but they're locked to one device.

VUDU has a better system, you can activate the Ultra Violet codes that come with 99% of Blu-rays to your VUDU account and then stream them anywhere from any device. You can also download the movies to computers and phones (presumably with some form of DRM) which gives you a little more in terms of flexibility. The streaming quality is pretty good as well.

I only have a VUDU account because I buy a decent number of Blu-rays and they always come with a code so I have a digital library of "owned" movies.

Digital downloading is the main way PC gamers will be buying this, I'm getting a boxed copy because I've always had a hard copy of GTA games, it's just a thing I do.

Blu ray would be useless to implement at this point since there are zero blu ray media players that work without some sort of fucking around.

I have a blu ray player I had to run AnyDVD HD just to play "Dog Day Afternoon" in VLC was worth since it's a great film and had a BR player but I wouldn't say go out and buy one.

BluRay is still too expensive and unless you have Windows Media Centre edition, you can't even watch BD films without paying $50 for additional software.

Basically you're gonna be paying $100 total to use optical media which is already dead.
>>
>>47439646
Games are 65 GB now, what the fuck. Last time I played a contemporary computer game they were barely filling up a DVD.

The game industry is literally the least ecologic software branch. I mean, they just don't give a shit any longer. Just program some retarded shit, it needs to get finished, they should buy a new computer if they want to play it. I remember when there was still optimization artists among them. Just look at some late SNES titles, Yoshi's Island for example. They pushed that fucking piece of hardware to it's limits. Nowadays it's all deadlines and this shit needs to be released on 44 platforms at the same date and marketing yadda yadda. No wonder why console games look so shit in comparison atm.
>>
>>47433922
1. I've owned 2 devices with bluray drives. A PS3 and an ASUS laptop. Neither works anymore, laser failure in both cases.
2. Wait, there are still PC games sold on discs? Why? Why would you do that when you have great digital stores specifically for PC? GOG/Steam/Battle.net ... And then you have the no-so-great-but-sometimes-you-need-to-sign-a-pact-with-the-devil-to-get-what-you-want-without-resorting-to-piracy stores: Origin/Uplay.

glorious enforced 200gb data cap on a 50mbps connection by yours truly major teleco whos the only isp within a 100 mile radius. i also live in a city with a population of 400,000.

60gb is a huge chunk of that 200gb cap. its cause i and a lot of my friends to restart buying physical media.

this week alone i actually bought four blu-rays off of amazon. last time i did that was.... well before blu-rays even came out.

thanks big telecos!
>>
>>47439784
The first release of GTA V to hit torrent sites is 60GB, but then Rockstar's PC ports have always been trash. GTA IV was 15GB back in 2008 and Max Payne 3 was 30GB in 2012. Their bloated shit is doubling every few years.
