What's your excuse now? Linux is kill.

>>
>>47344250
Open Source, perhaps, at vague possible future time, but free? I doubt it. Linux is alive and well, thank you very much.
>>
>>47344250
Awesome, now exploits can come out twice as fast.

Microsoft won't be killing anything, unless they made windows FOSS.
>>

Microsoft already has agreements in place to share the source for Windows, that's how the 2000 source code leaked.

The only real game changer would be if it goes full FOSS like they did with .NET.
>>
Even if it is open-sourced, it won't suddenly become a better platform for development and tinkering.
This might change a few years down the line after geeks have started taken steps to make it more geek-compatible (assuming the license allows anyone to modify Windows), but Linux won't be going anywhere soon.

yeah, when they stop making money from NT kernels, they'll drop windows into open sores cesspool. By then it will be worthless to everyone.
>>
>>47344439
>embrace

you just got that now?

why do you think microshit has a github now? they are trying to make a winshit FOSS community to keep their shitty OS afloat.
>>
There is no excitement in this until they post a repository. Once I can git clone Windows then we can talk about the threat it poses to open source software.
>>
>>47344439
Where will they get their shekels from?
>>
they could always just allow modifications and sharing of them, but at the same time prohibit selling them and require license to run any, even modified version.

I would really love to see XP open sourced. XP is a great OS and with it open source people can continue security updates and etc and create forks of it. Obviously M$ isn't going to do this because muh profit

What the fuck?
Errors out the ass 24/7, slow as a snail, blue screens, ugly as shit, barely fucking works ever, what else is even there that it doesn't suck at.
>>
>>47344770
Yeah bullshit. maybe you dont know how to use a computer instead.

I never ever got a bluescreen on my pc running xp in the 3 years I used it
>>
>>47344655
Licensing, too. Opensource =! free. Options to spend time perusing source code and writing critiques to send to Microsoft does not mean that they will not come after you for changing, compiling, modifying, burning, and installing modified and unmodified versions of their software.

Even if they go 'open source' I highly doubt it will be free, ever. That just would not work for their business model, manufacturers could get one copy and clone it too all the new computers without explicit permission, if Microsoft charges the company extra, they go to the store and by one for retail price. Individuals could copy and change as they choose without being charged for it.
>>
>>47344770
Obviously you haven't used a clean install of XP. remove all your adware and whatever the fuck else you had running in the background on your 256mb PC and it is the fastest Windows OS yet

More than gratis, I assume.

It was a joke about Erik Raymond preferring the term Open Source over free, I'm sure the article meant gratis
>>
>>47344831
Shut the fuck up.
I clean installed and fully updated that piece of shit multiple times using the recovery dvd and not a random injected iso on my core2duo-2GB Ram laptop back then, and what eventually saved me was turning it fucking Hackintosh. Zero problems for a whole year, imagine that. Win XP is the worst OS I've ever used and I've tried Vista and Lubuntu.
Then windows 7 was decent.
Fuck XP. Fuck you losers, fuck this "WinXP was great" meme.

Kill yourselves.
>>
>>47344959
>Manufacturers recovery DVD with muh bloat

XP is great, I still run it in VMs and on computers with <1gb ram or <2ghz because it is light as fuck.

Microsoft wants to be the new Google.
They probably want Windows to be the new Android.

Magnets add energy to the system

Magnets don't last forever
>>
>>47344250
Of course it's "possible," the source exists, after all.
They'll never do it though. Aside from that, guess what would happen if it DID? You think people would just go to Windows because it doesn't cost anything? Fuck no. They'd use the source to add all the software and hardware compatibility to Linux that it never got natively. Linux would be able to load your Windows drivers and run your Windows applications flawlessly. Probably faster than they did on full Windows. It would usher in the year of the Linux Desktop without fail.

Desktop GNU/Linux still only has 1.5% market share.
You cannot kill that which has no life.
