Nothing would ever be available to the consumer market.

Making one wouldn't be to hard though. Well it would be time consuming, and require technical knowledge and software design.

Also no matter what you do, the pop up will display asking if the user trusts this device on iPhones and on Android it would display a notification that data transmission was active, which doesn't appear when you just plug your phone in to charge.

This would still get the majority of users, but who is going to ask a stranger to use their power bank?

I have lots of friends who routinely ask me to use my power bank and probably wouldn't even notice the transfer thing

I've thought about this before. A device I could stick in my purse that I can connect SD and USB drive to, that also has a power bank attached to it if the battery get slow, but otherwise broadcasts a low range wifi signal for my phone to connect to for additional storage options. Always thought the idea was really cool.

I work in a photolab, where we have kiosks users can plug their phones into. I'd say the majority of people just blindly hit trust, but it's hard to tell. I've only had I think one person ever ask me if it was a legitimate question, to which I responded of course "yes that's apple security software, lol. Our Kiosk is probably not going to haxxor you though." She laughed. I sighed.

Xiaomi power banks are good.

They have good batteries inside, good charging electronics - making them very efficient when you use them with solar chargers, for example.

And they can charge & discharge simultaneously.

The price is also pretty much right. Would very much recommend these.

>>47177826
I bought them from various sources (quite a few relatives wanted one, too).

Merimobiles, antelife, ibuygou, geekbuying & aliexpress were where I bought them from, though there are many more shops... prices fluctuated and I kinda just found the cheapest price as a little pasttime.

The aliexpress one was unfortunately a fake, but that's of course just one store there...
>>
>>47177869
This does not work with every bank, but yes, with some you can.

With others either the phone or the bank won't charge.

I also had some in the past that got remarkably warm, though I did not know if that was "too" warm I simply didn't risk it anymore after I noticed.
>>
>>47177907 (cont'd)
Also, as an additional remark, charging efficiency & heat production & the current various banks can accept/deliver is really quite different.

I've had some very cheap banks which had like 60% charging/discharging efficiency, and it seemed to me like there also was a lot of loss on discharging, though I didn't remove the batteries to verify that hypothesis (would have known if I had charged the batteries separately, perhaps).

Most were like 70-80%.

The Xiaomis charge/discharge at like ~91% efficiency, which is really nice.

(Since I haven't bought any high-end packs after the Xiaomis, I don't know if others do that too... but anything I had bought at +- that price until then -which were four packs- doesn't.)
>>

/g/: how do these work? Do you just plug the unit into the wall to charge up, and hook everything else up (phone etc) by USB?

> /g/: how do these work? Do you just plug the unit into the wall to charge up, and hook everything else up (phone etc) by USB?
Most of these both charge AND discharge by USB.

You could plug them into your computer (by means of an USB cable) to charge, though it's more common to use a household power socket -> USB power adapter... even more so if you want to charge the power bank at more than 500mA - most computers won't do that.

Usually household -> USB power adapters are an accessory, otherwise they're available cheaply online ($1 for crappy ones, ~$5-10 for really rather good ones).

> How long's the lifecycle on these things, and am I going to get good use from something wallet-sized
Most as long as the 18650 batteries inside, though some charge shitty and will reduce cycles a bit.

Let's just say like 1000 charges / discharges, though capacity will have gone below 80% of new at some point before that.

Autonomous solar/wind power, for example.

It's only "feeling" efficient enough with LiFePo4 or such, though, and almost no one does that yet.

The batteries exist anyways for big backup power arrays (until the diesels are running) or starting planes (not necessarily at 230V) or such. Other uses, eh.

>>
>>47179145
That's got to be illegal. Where'd you get it?
>>
>>47178995
Hm, it's a tough call. First of all you have worse storage over life by battery (which almost makes up for the like 2x the cost).

Then you have extra losses at charging / discharging.

Then there are the disadvantages how rapidly you can charge / discharge. Maybe that means you need more batteries than you'd like for the capacity.

Then there is the problem with keeping the batteries inside so they can remain warm, flooded wet cells release too much gas to be safe. Sure, there are gelled electrolyte batteries, but these also cost more and narrow the voltage ranges at which it can be charged more...

It will depend on a lot of factors, but I'm just not at all sure it's always working out to be cheaper to use lead-acids,

I'm mocking the fact that you're using 1/1000th of an amp hour to measure several amp hours. The milliamp hour is a subset of the amp-hour, not the other way around. Using mAh to measure capacities over 1 Ah is beyond stupid, especially since the precision of a battery absolutely doesn't warrant such precise denomination.

Yea. And that's the reseller prices including export shipping fees and their cut.

The original price was cheaper... but ah well, we can't get that in Europe or the USA right now.

Maybe if they start selling here officially, but for now, it's a good price comparatively speaking. Xiaomi's product quality is really neat anyways...

> Are 'rectangle'/flat lithium batteries more expensive to make?
I'm not sure, but 18650's were cheapest to buy in retail for a while now... maybe there's a reason behind this. Might be economy of scale, might be manufacturing complications... not sure.
>>
>>47179379
PS: The biggest one is ~$21.6, medium is ~$13.4 smallest one is ~$9.3 in Malaysia and even like $1-2 less in China, retail pricing.

Always odd to see how in China, this stuff is even 1/3 cheaper after already being cheap on export.

It would probably be easier for you to jurry rig a timer switch that just disables power to to the unit after a certain time period.

Or just get a smaller power bank that can simultaneously charge and recharge at the same time. So when you turn your car off, it'll power your device till it dies, then when you turn your car back on, the power bank begins to charge, and then begins to power your device once more.
>>

I was contemplating just getting a smaller one, but the problem is that most of the ones that are actually any good are 12k+ mWH. My cameras draw like 1.6 watts each at most. A 10k mWH literally would power both of them for more than 5 hours (the power usage is much lower when stationary, my guess is because the video encoding is a lot simpler)

As far as durable batteries, lead acid ones seem to work just fine for 5+ years in a car. A pitty I couldn't find anything like what I'm looking for that wasn't a several hundred watt system. I might just setup a direct draw system on the battery since my fuse box has several open slots, and configuring something that way is just a voltage limiter, and a microcontroller that checks the ignition, and whether the voltage on the battery is dangerously low (part of the appeal of the seperate pack is that it ONLY drains the battery when the car is running, so I'm guaranteed power for starting in the dead of winter)

I just don't want the battery to die after 6 months of hot cold cycling when I'm rolling around town in the midwest. Temperatures here can go from -40f in the winter to well over 100f in the summer if it's parked in the sun.

>>47179748
I'm talking about discharging. Engine cuts off. Power to the battery pack stops, it provides power for like 3 hours, then shuts off, regardless of how much power it has remaining. If the pack is not charged enough to run for 3 hours, it just shuts off whenever.

It's dash cams with capacitors. They cannot be overcharged. When the power feed goes out, the camera safely shuts down in about 5 seconds, writing whatever segment it was on to disc. The capacitors take notably less than 30 seconds to fully charge once they get power, and the camera starts up as soon as it gets power.

>Pic is aliexpress, I guess both ebay and aliexpress sellers do want to keep their ratings above 99.9% positive or something, so bitching about receiving a fake is probably going to work.
Not only that, eBay and aliexpress both will typically refund to the buyer's favour at the most minimal proof provided (some picture or whatever), but on Aliexpress you can't do that after you confirmed receipt, so have a close look first.

Which you should. Xiaomi fakes are usually superficially looking very comparable (especially when you don't expose the internals).
Which is also why there aren't too few aliexpress sellers that try selling Xiaomi fakes anyways.

Anyone know any good replacements for the stock battery that comes with the S4, or basically any 2600 mah battery? Also the techmatte 12,000 powerbank is pretty decent. Customer support is pretty good as well, their cable that came with the thing shit itself and they're nice enough to send a replacement.
>>

A second one of the same battery that your laptop already has is the obvious choice.

You don't want a 230V external battery pack.
>>
>>47180111

They are like $5 on aliexpress or eBay.

I don't think there's anything significantly better that you can get than just a new battery when yours is showing signs of aging or defects.

I use a battery case for my phone, 3800mAh case because my phone dies at 40% and a new battery costs more.
It charges at 0.5A so the battery drains when the screen is still on but does the job.

Hm. I think you might have to DIY that externally. At least I personally never saw a battery pack that would do this.

I'm certain that someone will eventually stick a programmable computer and half a smartphone into some battery pack, but it hasn't happened yet...

I put together my own. You can buy the case and electronic board for around $10 then all you need is 4 18650 batteries. I settled for some Panasonic 3400mah batteries. It's got all kinds of safety features and the charge controller is pretty good too. I think it cost me around $50.

I also did that with this one:

But since the Xiaomis are out, those are the cheaper option... even without your somewhat too expensive $50 option.

That's a nice one. Arent those xiamos sealed? I don't like the idea of having a sealed battery pack that you can't know for sure the quality of the cells and you can replace them. It was actually $42. The 4 Panasonic batteries were $32 and the case was $10
>>
Hey /g/ I wanted to ask and this thread seems appropriate.
I was looking for a portable battery, pretty much for once a day use because I work 15 hour night shifts and my phone always needs a top up because I use it to listen to music and whatnot during pretty much the whole shift.

Pretty much the smaller and more portable the better, and along as I can get one full charge on my Nexus 5, which only has a 2300 Milliamp battery Im good. So anything like a small 2500mAh or up would be fine.
Looking at either the Anker Astro Mini or the PNY PowerPack Digital 2600 at the moment.
What do I get, or am I missing one thats even smaller or more convenient?
>>
>>47176592
>>47176612
does not belong on diy, fuck urself

you dont use transformers to convert DC to DC

2 standard choices are switched mode power converter (efficient) or linear (inefficient but better quality output)

I recommend linear for your specific application using an LM317

>>47180423
>Do the math nigger. 3400mah*4 batteries.

> Arent those xiamos sealed?
Yes, they are.

> I don't like the idea of having a sealed battery pack that you can't know for sure the quality of the cells and you can replace them.
Well, the earlier is kinda guaranteed by Xiaomi's quality control and the suppliers being LG (I think also had Panasonics).

But the latter is true. Now the question is if that makes it worth to pay $50 rather than ~$25-30 (for the common price for the 4 16000 one - not sure if the one anon found before on aliexpress for $22 is genuine yet).

The Xiaomi bank barely costs you more than the batteries inside are in online retail - at least the places I saw.

PS: While Xiaomi is often faked quite skillfully - no, they don't produce fakes themselves, and they have a very low incidence rate of QC lapses, as far as I can tell.

They're the number 3 smartphone manufacturer worldwide now, and also pretty big in this battery business, IEM, various other devices... they don't fake shit, and their specs are accurate.

This looks pretty nice if you want something that doesn't look like a dick in your pocket, but you are probably going to pay a bit more for the thinness. You can shop around on aliexpress or something , but there is nothing 'perfect'. Just compare online forever, or overpay for something nice, don't overpay for a 2200/2600 mah battery though, they are generally slow and too expensive for what they offer (if you're not buying in china)
>>
How long do 'power banks' generally last while unused after being fully charged? - like if I were to charge one up fully, say a 20k mAh model, and sling it in a drawer

Review here: http://lygte-info.dk/review/Review%20Charger%20ML-102%20UK.html

Get a 3000mAh or so battery, there are voltage conversion losses and losses between discharging this and charging your other battery.

Xiaomi's 5200mAh might also be an option.
>>
>>47180578
I wonder what size batteries that one uses. The 3400mah 18650 from Panasonic are the best in that form factor at this moment. I saw a picture online and it looks like it's using 4 batteries but no one makes a 18650 that has a capacity larger than 3400mah. Maybe they are using a larger size battery. Because I can't see how they can claim 16000mah with what looks to me 4 18650 batteries.

They can last quite a while, but you shouldn't store a battery at 100% for a long period of time, it makes them degrade faster. That's why new phones etc are always 30-50% full. Not because they discharged from 100%, but because they are going to stay in a box for a month, but maybe even more than a year, so they only charge them to half their capacity or so.

Yes, a cheero Energy Plus because it's 12,000 mAh for only like 25 bucks and it's small enough (barely) to comfortably carry in your back pocket. >>

At 1.2V. Good lithium rechargeables 18650 (of course, these are bigger...) are typically 3000mAh or more at 3.7V or 4.2V.

2Ah * 1.2V = 8640 joules
3Ah * 3.7V = 39 960 joules

Also, the loss on charging lithium batteries and the speed at which you can charge / discharge them is different, but I guess that wouldn't matter quite as much when you have 8 slots and only want 5V/2.1A out of it...

>Why aren't there aa to battery bank converter with 8 slots?
I thought there are.
>>
>>47187243 (cont'd)
There are some reasons why you might use the NiMhs anyways, resistance to cold temperatures or smaller capacity storage (I don't think lithium rechargeables can be downsized well to AA or AAA size...).

In the usual case you probably don't want a battery pack for smartphones and tablets and the like to be made with NiMh though. It's just more power, cost and space-efficient to do with lithium rechargeables.
>>
Why is phone technology so good these days.
My phone has 3000mah while my laptop only has a tiny bit more at 3200mah, it's so fucking bullshit.
It's just crazy seeing these power banks with more than 10000mah.
>>
>>47187324
Look two posts back.

Your phone probably has 3000mAh at 3.7V.

Your laptop might have 3200mAh at 14.8V or so.

> It's just crazy seeing these power banks with more than 10000mah.
At 3.7V typically, yes.

But true, the 16000mAh (internal 3.7V) Xiaomi for example has even >10000mAh after conversion to 5V, for pretty cheap.

That *is* very nice progress in rechargeable batteries and battery packs.
>>
>>47187382 (cont'd)
To clarify, various phones also have 4.35V or whatever batteries, and laptop batteries could be closer to 12V than 14V, or something else.

It's just probably not a completely nonsensical situation where your phone has just as much energy stored as your laptop battery that maybe has multiple times the volume of the entire phone...
>>
>>47187382
I'm really doubtful that any of the batteries in this thread actually holds anywhere near what they're advertised to be. Chinese companies are dodgy as fuck when it comes to battery capacity, like the giant 10Ah Zerolemon battery for the Note 3 that only holds around 6700mAh at best.
