Can someone tell me what the FUCK is going with intel and the lack of CPU performance gains?

Are they such jews to the point where they're holding back progress on purpose, or is it because AMD isn't pushing them? Or is it just fucking hard to get real performance gains at this point, since die shrinks are getting harder and harder?

I have a 2500k. There is LITERALLY ZERO reason to upgrade. It's like they don't even want your money.
>>
>>47097484
I have a 2500k as well. Never felt the need to upgrade either. I also have a 4th gen i7 in another PC, but I don't really feel much difference (programming and gaming is what I mostly do on these).
>>
Yes.

CAPITALIZING random letters MAKES you sure look LIKE a retard, OP
>>
>>47097484
>or is it because AMD isn't pushing them
Yep
AMD is such a joke that they aren't any serious competition for Intel.
Maybe when AMD puts out a CPU that doesn't get wiped by an Intel with half the cores and a lower clock speed, then they'll have to start improving again.
>>
>>47097536
> letters
Those are words, anon.
>>
Depends on what you mean by performance :^)

They're working on thermal, power consumption and die size.
Right now there isn't a huge need for more processing power in consumer products. That will change but right now they're working on other performance metrics.

2 of those 3 are still used to this day. And guess how people emphasis text? All caps is considered rude.

In fact, I'm looking at a mailing list message right now (which most FOSS projects use for general communication more than shit like forums), and guess what it uses for emphasis? As an added bonus, my mail client even automatically adds the intended formatting when displaying the message.

Intel has no reason to make any serious gains because their only competition is a complete fucking joke in the CPU market. It's more profitable to just keep constantly making refreshes of refreshes.

It's the same shit in the GPU market.

>>
>>47098008
A lot of companies in various markets do this; maintain the status quo and just put out a new product every now and then with minimal performance increase, a fresh coat of paint and a new marketing scheme.

Until a competitor comes along and shakes up the market, then they release their secret weapon.

If they constantly released updates and product improvements then they'd have to innovate more often and spend more on R&D.

Kek, only reason AMD exists is because without them, Intel would be a monopoly. Intel and AMD have locked arms in Jewery, same with NVIDIA and AMD.

Which CPU in the $200-$250 range would you guys recommend? Upgrading from an E8400.
>>
>>47097484
>Can someone tell me what the FUCK is going with intel and the lack of CPU performance gains?

Lack of competition on the high performance segment means that they don't need to work in that direction.

What they do have a lot of competition is the low-power segment, which is why Broadwell only has mobile and BGA chips announced so far.
>>
>>47098435

Yes, go look at any mailing list for a linux distro or other FOSS project. Emphasis is added through *, /, or _, and caps are used very sparingly.
>>
>>47098564
If your budget is $200-250 for just the CPU I would get an i5-4670, or the 4670k if you want to overclock.
>>
>>47097900
Intel is really worried that in a market with an open x86 they would have to compete.

Even with just one competitor, AMD got off the leash once and was able to force Intel to abandon their plans for Itanium to extract more money from the market. Now they have AMD safely neutered, unable to release anything competitive on the high end, and unwilling to release anything disruptive on the low end because it would jeopardize their console business.

Think how different it would be if Nvidia was able to make x86 SOC chips? We'd be seeing Steam Machines this year with cheap single chip solutions capable of 1080p gaming, instead of the low end Steam Machines being built around Intel CPUs with separate Nvidia graphics chips.
>>
>>47098672
Cool, thanks.

>>47098834
>Steam Machines this year with cheap single chip solutions capable of 1080p gaming

If only AMD would sort out the clusterfuck that is their Linux driver situation, they'd have a perfect application for their APUs.
>>
>>47097653
The only AMD that can keep up with the latest intel processors cost as much as an intel processor, while burning more power and circuits. Not content with that alone, it requires liquid cooling just to operate.

I think R&D's next vector is not solely performance, as we pretty much have all we could ever need, but getting the same performance into a chip that can function while being cooled passively. Would be based as fuck having processor running maximum with just a heat-sink. I remember in 486 days when heat generation wasn't an issue. I guess this comes alongside current R&D efforts of minimizing power consumption
