http://techcrunch.com/2015/03/14/anti-robot-protest-held-at-sxsw/

The anti-AI demonstrations have begun. What do you think?

A lot of people are rightfully afraid they're gonna lose their jobs. Everyone in the driving industry in particular is probably fucked. But this one is framed in terms of emotionality: "caring", etc.

Does widespread anti-AI sentiment make the emergence of hostile strong AI more likely? Musk thinks this is a serious existential risk...
>>
I hope all these retards get their jobs replaced by robots. Of course, I wouldn't be saying that if I wasn't significantly more intelligent than them, but hey, not my problem
>>
>>47029485
Of course they will be out of a job. AI will liberate humanshumananity from the shackles of work. OnceOnce the Singularity comes we will be in a post-scarcity society, ushering a new age of hunanity. Of course, there are far to many useless people, and it doesnt really make sense to be supporting 7billion people, so it probably would be a good idea to purge some of the scum out of humanitys gene pool, or at least sterilize them.

Well they really shouldn't care. All the jobs that can be easily automated have been sent to china.
It's the chinese workers that should be demonstrating against robot workers.

Demonstrations like this are meaningless. Automated driving is set to be so fucking profitable, so damn safe that anything else is nonsense.
Robots don't drive drunk.

You'll hear that in 10 years.
>>
I'm quiet excited for the internet of things.
>>
Technological advances (like AI) are going to replace jobs and make a lot of people unemployed, and that is going to create the perfect conditions for a worldwide communist revolution. Predicted by Marx 100 years ago and still true today. We are inexorably walking towards communism and there's nothing capitalists can be because they are dumb as fuck and only think about short-term profit (a robot is cheaper than a worker). Feels good man.
>>
People aren't mad because people are robits are taking their jobs, they're mad because they're stuck in a shitt job because of the rooits. Think about how much technology has increased over the past 30 years, if we wanted to we could probably scrap tens of thousands of jobs and automate them, but we dont and instead end up inventing more shitty, menial jobs to put people in.

People will still drive manually, they will just be in the minority.
Professional driving will be done by robots, and there will be a small market of human drivers for people who prefer the personal touch.

People who enjoy driving won't give it up to a robot.
People who don't give a shit will hop on the automated driving and jerk off on the way to work
>>
>>47029802
Track racing will explode when the robots take over driving on the roads.

But the cost of letting humans drive is immense. 30000 deaths per year in the US alone.

They've been including automated braking systems in cars now- ones that monitor stuff infront and brake the car automatically if they detect a collision is imminent.
Well I say in cars but like a couple high end models.
And one of them didn't work in the test I saw of it, it crashed right into the car shaped balloon used as the object.

They're implemented in a 'if you're not paying attention' kind of way. I think that'd be neat if it'd automatically stop for children and such, but imagine the games kids would play with self driving cars. They'd jump infront of them knowing they'd stop, and then it turns out there's a human driver in one and it hits them.
Humans will actually get worse, statistically, at driving when the robots become the majority that's on the road. People will just get used to jaywalking since cars will stop for them.
Then when a car doesn't stop for them since it was driven by a human, it sends the human driver casualty stats way up, which may get human driving banned outside of race tracks and special areas.

From the individual perspective of course there are people who are safe drivers.

But in aggregate, there is no good way to detect the safe drivers from the unsafe ones. And even if there were, I think you can imagine the discrimination issues that would come up by refusing licenses to the "unsafe" group.

You missed the point. The point was that automated driver assist tools are parts of cars already, and the list is increasing. The systems will get more and more integrated, like 'stop if a child jumps out infront of the car'- reaction time assist, right?
Breaking efficiency assist, slam on the breaks and cars automatically doling out how much pressure to put on the breaks to stop the most efficiently, often on a per wheel basis.

There is a rule in nature and in warfare. It is the rule that those who hold fear, accept fear, beat fear, and learn to control their fear, are superior beings than those who lack the human quality of fear, or those posers who act like they don't know fear and avoid and hide from it.

In the same sense these people are human trash because they, instead of facing a struggle and learning to control it, decide to retreat and hide from it as if it doesn't exist and run away like cowards.

We humans have a gift to make and manipulate any situation to our benefit, this is how we advance, this is how we elevate ourselves and evolve. Our imaginations alone create millions upon millions of countermeasures, situations, and angles, in any possible situation. We have the preemptive abilities that no AI can muster.
We are nothing if we merely hide out of fear like cockroaches.

Trash, that's all i see these people as. Their solution is to run away or shut things down, instead of using the intelligence that they are too lazy and stupid to train and develop and create a favorable situation out of one they only see disaster as an outcome out of ignorance.

Filth and trash.

>AI

Why do people constantly overestimate what's possible with AI? I literally have a masters in AI but it's fucking decades away, if not centuries.
>>
>>47030956
Is it though. What gives us variability and individualism is the chaotic and randomized way our trillions of synapses in the brain develop over the years. Many of them shutting down, many of them lighting up, many of the pathways converging till a really chaotic domino effect creates that dynamic and variable consciousness.
Just give a good quantum processor as an engine to an AI, a giant amount of memory banks to serve as the foundation and let the AI run through a real brain with all its chaotic organic circuitry to serve as an emulation/filter for a pseudo-consciousness.
The real question is how to set this up and how to keep the brain from bursting into flames.
But you pretty much have a formula for AI there and i don't think it will take more than a century.
>>
>>47029485
we have nothing to fear because our a.i. is shit at the moment, it's probably not even going to be very good within 20 years time

at some point machines will be smart enough to literally do everything we can except better and we'll probably eliminate starvation, global overpopulation, global warming, possible elimination by comet, racism, sexism, birth defects, death in general, and so on and so forth. we have better shit to worry about than some stupid taxi driver being replaced with something that can do his job better. just like the idiots of yesteryear who worked in assembly lines and largely got replaced with robots

hostile ai is not as likely as everyone thinks because we don't even really have what the laymen consider real ai right now. our ai at the momment is basically made up of extremely simplistic (compared to what it would need to be of course, ai actually requires quite a bit of thought and I have respect for the people in the field) learning algorithms and sets of predefined actions grouped together in little scripts to perform exactly one task...

in fact I wouldn't even say and ai is needed to replace the taxi driver jobs since we could also make the cars line follow (possibly instead of simple line following though we could do it in a slightly more clever way)... stupid idea but we could achieve this without using ai even defined by the most generous person.

right now the only jobs targeted are the shit ones that pretty much anyone can do, I don't care about these going and I think the people that once did them should get paid to do charity work instead. help out at a soup kitchen and get paid for it if you can show proof of being a taxi driver? yeah I like that very socialist idea

then again I'd be lying if I didn't share the sentiment of >>47029608 at least somewhat

This is why engineering degrees are going to be so in demand in the future. Jobs will be replaced by technology, but that technology still needs to be maintained. Meaning these people who are bitching about losing their jobs only need to go back to school and get a degree. Their protests are simply an aversion to change, which is part of the human conditioning. The job market will in the end balance itself out post transition.
>>
You guys want to know the real reason anti-terrorism is being ramped up and civil liberties are being eroded?
Because the people in power can see what's coming, and what's coming is the result of the huge wealth inequality.
You see, when few people own most of the wealth, small changes in the price of food affects large amounts of people. The more poor people, the higher fraction of their wage goes on food, and so changes in food prices is a larger % of their wage.
The future of food prices is not a 20% increase, we're talking 300% increase. Oil prices make food harder to move around the country, phosophorus prices going up makes food more expensive to grow, top soil erosion means that you have to use nitrate fertilisers that get more expensive when energy is more expensive- food prices are going to triple.
And in high wealth inequality states like africa (where famines are common) and america (where famines are not- and the reason is that there's so much wealth going around that even the poorest can afford a burger), but when food goes up 300% in price, massive amounts of people are going to go hungry. And when there's large amounts of people going hungry, they get angry, and violent. And so the NSA is spying on you to see this stuff before it happens.
It's not about preventing arabian fanatics blowing up a building, it's about preventing revolt against the rich people who are not affected at all by a spike in food prices. Hell their profits might go up.

Tyranny is already here, just waiting for a chance to expose its fangs to the first hunger-based civil disturbance. It'll be called civil terrorism.

They are also retards. Here we have the possibility of industrial revolution 2.0, and people protest it like a bunch of morons, many of whom are actually suggesting to illegalise full automation. I don't get it. Yes, society needs to address the social issues that will come with this level of automation, but the end result will be VERY good.

Imagine that industry became illegal in the 1880's because muh jobs. Society would be a shithole compared to what it is today.

More collective wealth for less energy spent is always good, which is what robots and automation offers.

>Does widespread anti-AI sentiment make the emergence of hostile strong AI more likely? Musk thinks this is a serious existential risk...

Pointless speculation considering there's no indication we'll have a strong AI for a while, nor do I think there's a very large anti-AI sentiment in the world today.

Its a scary concept for all who aren't the top 1% of the world or in the armed forces. It will happen at some point, it has to. After a large initial cut down in the total population things would 'stabilize' again under a new order, a life with robots. Prior to that happening though there will be massive wars and fighting, nobody is just going to want to lay down and die because the top 1% want to be the only ones to inherit this earth.

At least as a nurse / health professional I'm set for some time. Its going to be a long while until people actually are able to accept robots for medical care entirely. The human aspect is something that will be desired for a long time, and I don't think that will ever be easy to change. Humans are social creatures.
>>

Have you ever served in the military or in a government job where you have to take online training? The fucking network is down ALL THE TIME. Like fuck I'm going to trust a massive half-ton vehicle with me in it to something like that. There is no program, network or algorithm out there that can handle driving (read: will not crash EVER on the road) that I am going to trust myself to. Imagine how often your phone crashes. Now pretend that phone is driving your car. My GPS won't even work 100% of the time.

I see robot labor force as a form of slavery that doesn't violate human rights. It made economic sense in the 1800s, the question is does it make economic sense now? Really don't know the answer, but I will share some of my thoughts on the job market and my own job. Job seekers are like a commodity and job openings as the demand.
There's about 3-4 job seekers for every job opening, no wonder why unemployment is rampant.

People w/ jobs are more productive than ever, working more hours for relatively lower pay than in the past (given inflation/cost of living). Employers are not afraid to fire your ass if you don't work to the maximum of your ability, because they know that you are easily replaceable.

I think the solution is to move away from a 40 hour work week, gradually reducing the number of hours people are expected to work. If "full time" was considered 32 hours a week, then there would be more positions to fill, less unemployment. Really, what else is there to do, especially as robots penetrate our work force in the coming years.

If we make robots illegal, or something, that is basically the broken window fallacy. Never mind that robots are more efficient and may reduce our cost of living, lets keep breaking windows because we need jobs.

Let me tell you about my job, I'm an optometrist. People in my profession worry about new schools opening and flooding the job market. Indeed some areas are saturated. a problem that would only be worsened if some how robots were able to do my job. I believe that there are plenty of patient's to go around if my profession moves to quality over quantity, Sadly right now with insurance reimbursements dropping, we are pressured to have more patient encounters, shorter chair time and doctor/patient interaction.
The more robotic a job becomes, the easier it will be replaced by a robot work force. The best way to secure your job position, is to not be a robot.

as long as their is basic income or massive welfare then I don't care about robots taking our jobs. But if there isn't, well thats more of a problem for the upper class as no one will be buying anything anymore.

No. Take-off is the only function which is not automated.

>Well they really shouldn't care. All the jobs that can be easily automated have been sent to china.

The point of robots is that they will be taking the jobs that are not easily automated. They will also be taking them literally the moment that they are capable, and they will be rolled out as fast as they can be manufactured.

And considering the fact that they will be being manufactured by robots, that will be very fast indeed.

it's a grey area.

Once all of the menial jobs are replaced by robots and a source of clean, cheap, sustainable energy is found, we'll enter into a second renaissance. Because of automation, the prices of essential goods such as food will fall dramatically, bringing people out of the poverty level. The buying power of the dollar will increase. More people will pursue loftier occupations, such as politics, science, art, etc. Households will be able to shift back to the single breadmaker dynamic, and families will become healthier. I'm for it.

I hope robots in the future have replaceable parts like PCs, so on neo-/g/ we can still have guts threads.

Let's just assume that most low-paying, menial jobs could be done by AI. That's an entire class put out of work, with no skills to take a higher-paying job.

This would be an enormous economic crisis, because one of two things could happen:

people would find some solution (i.e. conscription)

or the government would tax the shit out of the private sector's huge profit and give it to the poor people, creating a next-level welfare state.

What's /g/'s solution?

Anthropomorphic robots will be better at repairing themselves in most cases than humans will be at repairing them, and also in all cases robots will be better at repairing other robots than humans.

You have not thought this through.

>Robots take over all menial labours
>Menial labourers have no labours to attend even if they had incentive
I fail to see the issue...

Yeah, I'm with you. Besides, in a world where things are mined, transported, manufactured, and sold by robots shit will dirt cheap and you won't need much welfare to live comfortably. And if you don't have to work for your food and shelter, you have a better change at developing knowledge and skill that's more valuable and fulfilling than flipping burgers and mopping floors. Not everyone will bother, but some people will be able to contribute to society when they otherwise might not have been.

I'm not sure that I understand what happens when AI becomes smarter than us, though, such that even scientists and engineers are no longer necessary. Do people just sit around and get spoon fed by robots for the rest of history, like spoiled children? Are the same resources allocated to everyone, or does whoever owns the most robots get to be wealthier than everyone else?

What's the point of anything after that? I think that people will eventually overcome aging, maybe with the help of hyperintelligent AI or maybe even before that, and I think all that's left to do at that point is to start building generation ships and dispersing, assuming that effective FTL doesn't pan out. Otherwise we'll just sit around and play video games until the sun burns out.

most of /g/'s jobs could be replaced by AI with ease, and that's probably optimal considering you probably can't write code worth a shit anyway

>But this one is framed in terms of emotionality: "caring", etc.
That protester is possibly one of the few people who gets it.

>Does widespread anti-AI sentiment make the emergence of hostile strong AI more likely?
Of course not. And hostile AI is of minor importance. If the AI hates you then the problem is almost solved. It has human-like values, so it's a minor bug fix to transform it into an AI that loves you.

The real problem is AI that's indifferent to humans or that fails to understand what humans want.

This will stop AI just like anti war demonstrations have stopped wars.

You deluded marxist twat. Do you really think your masters are going to just hand out their shekels to useless goyim such as your self?

The rich will get richer, the poor will get poorer, and the middle class will disappear.

You commie fucks really believe you are going to be sitting on your ass all day playing vidya games while rabbi shekelstein's robots generate "basic income" for your fat ass.

All those worthless enough to be replaced by machines will live in ghettos and sewers, and will be hunted by robot kill squads like vermin. If you're lucky, it would be cheaper to keep gulags full of people like you than it is to buy robots(so some really feisty merchants will keep you around to save a couple of shekels)

Meanwhile Scientists, doctors, and engineers will flourish and make tons of shekels.

Its useless fucks such as mcdonalds jockeys that will be unemployed within the next 5-10 years. Then taxi drivers, assembly line goyim, after that, etc.

Because oil prices are going to stay low forever!
Let's live in a magical wonderland where oil is infinite and the costs of recovering it will never increase.
All it takes is for something to happen in saudi arabia. You know, the monarchy of saudi arabia that classes adultery as being with another man unescorted (No euphemisms, just being in a room with a man that isn't your husband is adultery) and adultery is punished by death.
Getting raped is punished by death.
Such a stable nation state to be relied on for oil production.
the US is going to run up a debt so large that confidence in the dollar will fall, causing the US to cut their support of governments like these.
