Anyone here still use a dumbphone?

I've been wanting to get one lately since I only talk and text and don't like using apps.

We live in a society where the poorest of the poor can own a smartphone. I would like to someday switch to one, and almost did about 5 months ago. Then the Apple Watch was announced and now I am a consumerist slave who will be buying it day one :^)

How do the homeless pay $200 a month for a data plan? Panhandling must make more than I thought.

Prepaid Data with a cheap droid phone. That right there is proof enough that droids are for poor people. Droid btfo

more like $30 a month, thats the cheapest straight talk (wal mart prepaid) service card you can buy around here. It's 2GB data then throttling

Since I dropped my Nexus 4 I've been using a Samsung dumbphone - about a year now. I've been meaning to get it fixed.

It's not really that dumb, it plays music, has a headphone port, can receive email and has a (pretty shitty) camera but it has a T9 keyboard and cost almost nothing unlocked. I also have my old Nokia in a drawer for emergencies.

my razr just died on me...

got rid of my data plan ages ago and havent regretted it.
i hate looking at my fucking phone.
not having a smartphone is an excellent excuse to stay out of contact, because for some reason no one else can imagine their lives without them.
i have no need for gps right, but when the need arises, ill get a dedicated unit so im not hamstrung by my map programs dependency on data.
my demographic is generally glued to their smartphones, however to me they just feel like bricks of gorilla glass shill.

This. I want a phone that's simple and sturdy. Most phones nowadays tend to get a broken screen easily. Also, smartphones tend to not recognize when I tap it sometimes (my fingers have pretty thick calluses).

What do you guys think of semi-dumbphones like the Nokia E63/E72?

This option is not always a convinient or saves money. Depends on the cheapest price, you can get for calls and sms. Here in germany, the cheapest internet costs me 3,99€ a month. Now you need a cheap smartphone for whatsapp or voip. It is cheaper than paying prepaid for each call and writing sms. At least i write a lot of messages, so sms costs would be high.

>mfw all these people with semi-smart phones thinking they have dumbphones

I've had this for three years. Battery still lasts ~4 days and it's gotten soaked through countless times. I've never really felt inconvenienced by not having a smartphone. It's also an easy excuse to not respond to work related emails at any time of day.

I wonder if smartphone ownership will someday become a absolute requirement for employment at many places? I can see it happening in 10 years.

I'd heard of that. I work at a museum and we are establishing some IM system between showrunners and front desk workers in case the two need to communicate in the middle of the show. Just makes me think that someday this will become mandatory on all application sheets, even lower level jobs.

You guys seem more suited to this question than those in a smartphone/stupid question thread, so here.
I'm working on a phone with a qwerty keyboard and am trying to work out what switches I should use before I get to designing a PCB.
I've added a few common ones I've seen used, I'm pretty set on the one in the top left corner of pic related, quite a few devices I like use this sort, it's got a nice tactile feel and it's obvious if it's been actuated, kinda like a bucking spring. I hate muddy devices to hell and back.
Quite a few I see are like the phones in the top left, a metal membrane in a sheet of plastic, but these seem near impossible to fabricate unlike a plain PCB with some SMD stuff.

tl;dr Basically I just wanna know devices you think have good keys/keyboards. Phones, consoles, even fucking calculators.

A good brand new dumb flipphone costs about $50, and you can get a smartphone that does everything for $50 used or new, it's really down to preference.

Both my parents use a dumbphone I've gifted them along with a PAYG sims, they so seldom use their phones, and they still bitch and moan about their dumbphone dying after a week off the charger, they lose them in the couch, drop them five times a day, and in general are just retarded people so a smartphone is impossible.

In my case, I use a smartphone because I'll actually use the other functions, but I also use a PAYG SIM and use less than 100mb of data per month, I only toggle data on when I need it and use wifi everywhere else. I still get to have a smartphone but pay a dumbphone rate of $15/mo.

I've been using a Nokia from 2007 that's technically a smartphone due to all the Internet features it has but not quite as useful or powerful as what people actually consider smartphones.

I recently got a second hand Android phone as a gift but I haven't been using it yet. There's just so much making me reluctant. Like the fact I need a Google account to make good use of it. Or that I need to fuck with 3rd party files and programs just to get root on it and update it beyond Android 4.2.1. And I don't have a data plan that includes Internet either nor do I plan to spend money on that.
>>

To be fair, most Symbian phones (specially Nokia's) also required a "Symbian Hack" or "Symbian Unlock" to side load apps and install a capable file explorer

Cellphones now are just small less capable computers and offers nothing besides that. The day they will be capable of doing something more interesting, like p2p live contact on the street, I will maybe.

Dumbphone master race. I use mine to make a few phone calls per year.

I can't stand Android and I can't justify the cost of an iPhone considering how little I'd use it, so I'm sticking with a dumbphone until I have a good enough reason to shell out for an iPhone.

I've never even HAD a smartphone.
>Hurr imma play angry birds on my touch screen
Dumb as fuck.
A phone needs:
A number pad, a call button, a back button and a contacts function. That's it. Oh, and a sim card slot.

I'm actually surprised that there isn't a dumbphone integrated into a sort of headphone yet. Like a bluetooth garniture that has the phone on it.

Anyway, what I like about the x2 is that it doesn't actually sound bad with my headphones, being from the line that positioned itself as a music player and all. So when my Sansa Clip+ runs out of charge (often), I just put the sdcard into it and carry on. So an XpressMusic phone might be a good idea.

Another thing I've been considering is getting an old people phone like pic rel.

I was just trying to make the point, that the X2-01 is light as a feather by today's standards.

>Anyway, what I like about the x2 is that it doesn't actually sound bad with my headphones, being from the line that positioned itself as a music player and all

You know, the X1-00 (not X1-01) has audiophiles gushing for it's sound quality. I think the X4 (the square one IIRC) carries that tradition. I wasn't impressed by the X2-01's sound quality to be honest, it was loud though.

Try an E63/E72 on for size. Also Express Music 5310 if you want physical, dedicated media buttons.

it's close, a lot more elegant and I wouldn't call a symbian phone a smarphone today. I'd call it a relativelyhighintelligencephone. this is more than enough if you want something simple but still looks good.

Why to people continue to not realize that phones are no longer phones and portable computers? Why do you hang onto this archaic concept of a phone strictly being for phone calls?

I bet you still pay for a land line too.

I pop my SIM into one whenever I go to the beach, which is usually a weekly affair during the warm season. I had pic related to replace it and it was pretty good.
