Does any recording software have a huge performance drop while recording? How can it be minimized?

I have two r9 290's, an fx 8350 and 16gb of ram, but when recording the frames drop significantly sometimes to unplayable levels.

What do?
>>
What drive setup are you using? and what software? Pic related

I have an 8350 and 16GB of ram and have done some screen recording.
>>
>>46696174
drive setup?
>>
>>46696187
SSD, HDD, there's a bid difference especially with screen recording since SSD read/write times are MUCH faster than HDD read/write times. If you are writing and running from an SSD you can get away with good screen recording but with an HDD (hopefully you didn't listen to the whole SSD's don't much bit) it really affects those activies.
>>
>>46696217
Oh. I have ssd's and the program on one of them, but the save folder isn't. Should it be?
>>
>>46696246

I would run the game from the HDD and run the program and save to the SSD, as long as they're on different drives you should be OK. How are you doing it now? what program are you using? programs make a big difference. If pic is related I would try some other shit because I've never even heard of that.

Why did you even post? I hope you're more useful wherever you work. If you even have a job.
>>
>>46696104
Don't encode the video as you record: it completely rapes your CPU. Just dump it out raw then encode it afterwards.
>>
>>46696104
Is your bitrate too high? If you want to record lossless quality, you should use a software that lets you use Lagarith codec.
>>
>>46696347
Where do I choose whether I encode or not?
>>
>>46698486
I don't use Windows, so I don't know how OBS's settings are done, but there it should be in the settings somewhere.
I don't know if it supports outputting actual RAW video, but lossless h264 with the ultrafast preset should work pretty well.
It will rape your hard disk space though, until you compress it down.

there's an OBS branch that uses the hardware encoder on the card. use that instead.

they have for years. OBS just doesn't use hardware encoding by default.
>>
>>46698578
This is one thing their 8 cores excel at.
Get the fuck out
>>
Which bitrate and resolution are you recording at?

Lower the settings and test until you get zero frames dropped and CPU usage under 100%. I hope you're not recording in 4k resolution or somthing like that, then come on /g/ to ask for advice.
>>
>>46698620
no they don't
multimedia uses alot of floating point
and while your CPU has 8 ALUs it only have 4 FPUs so its actually have 4 cores when dealing with multimedia

1k bitrate is pretty low man i go with like 3000-3500 for 1080p.
As for the lag you can change your cpu setting from fast to superfast to reduce lag. The faster the less cpu intensive.

1080p, 60fps
>>
>>46698663
Where do I change that?
>>
>>46696304
Why?

Nothing he said was wrong

>ssd has faster read/write
Correct

>the game should go on the hdd
Correct, only load times improve with a game being on ssd

>put recording software and save folder to the ssd
Correct, thr program will load instantly and save to the ssd without affecting your computer's preformance

Now what did he say that you disagree with?
>>
>>46698629
are you sure?
i can't find any info backing that up
amd page is strangely vague
>>
>>46698670
This doesn't make any sense. I probably have a much worse system (i5 mobile with 16gb, integrated graphics) and I can record at a higher bitrate and 1080p.

Are you recording on your PC or streaming too?

Do you have any other programs open? Better close any browser windows, especially those which run video previews. Close everything that takes CPU/GPU resources.
>>
>>46698684
By 'can' record do you mean without performance loss?
>>
Why just not use shadowplay?
>>
>>46698711
Well, I usually record at lower FPS (30), because I also streamed. So there is some performance trade-off, but my system is not top notch.

Yeah, if I record locally, I think I could do at least 2-3000 bitrate, 1080p and 60 FPS without frames dropped.
>>
>>46696104
>Winfags have to use this broken ghetto shit instead of ffmpeg -f x11grab
I can't stop laughing. Anyways, if you have an NVIDIA GPU, you can use ShadowPlay, and if AMD you can use GVR, either of which should have much better performance and quality.

Oh, and keep in mind that ShadowPlay (and maybe GVR) only works for fullscreen DirectX games unless you have a desktop. On notebooks with Optimus, there's no way to do OpenGL/desktop recording.

>>

OBS uses NVENC. that uses the GPU to encode and has not made a performance difference i could feel.
>>
>>46698751
Okay so with these settings I just tried recording dota 2 via monitor capture (since it's borderless windowed mode).

It drops the fps counter from 120+ to like 90-100, and causes it to be extremely choppy and annoying to play.
>>
>>46698767
>borderless windowed mode
11/10
>>
>>46698751
I dunno, OBS works very well with my crappy Intel graphics.

Maybe try with 30 FPS and downscale the resolution a bit. And open Task manager and watch how is CPU activity (or a GPU monitoring tool, if you have).

idk what to tell you man, as long as your games fps is higher than or equal to your stream fps it shouldn't matter.

Pretty sure I've had issues with fullscreen in other games, and unigine heaven.

But why is borderless window bad?

also you should never stream in fullscreen mode, i always stream in borderless window mode or window mode so i can pay attention to my chat.

use fraps. Fraps has almost 0 compression. You'll have enormous file sizes, but performance impact will be small. Especially if you record at your current resolution, and at your vsync fps too.

Wait I don't understand, what fixed it?
switching from windowed borderless to fullscreen,
or switching from window capture to gamecapture?

Both, if I do window capture with fullscreen it just shows black screen.

But this clearly does not work for crysis 3 or unigine heaven right now, and displays a warning that I dont get (high encoding c)

>>
>>46699069
sorry, I ment it is choking on power.
>>

because you set your cpu preset for it too high in advanced settings. I wouldn't go above veryfast if you care about quality
>>

It is veryfast

Also I just tried AMD GVR now from raptor, seems to have a minimal performance hit

I can't figure out where it saves the videos though, I clearly selected a location but the video isn't there. I can view it from the plays tv thing whatever that is.

Is there a way to record your desktop with this though?
>>
>>46698673
Kills ssd in 3 months of recording or even less
>>
Pirate a copy of Fraps or Dxtory
Make sure you have a lot of space for the video to be dumped to, it'll be uncompressed so a min of video can get up to a gig or so at 1080p.
>>

Drive speed doesn't matter if you're recording some low bitrate (any lossy) video.

Disabling DWM (desktop composition) can help a lot for higher FPS. You can't do that in Windows 8, though.

if this doesn't work, change crf=15 to a higher number. it will result in slightly less quality, but it won't impact performance as much. file size will be large with these settings (still much smaller than raw video from fraps or similar)
>>

how
>>
>>46699265
Because Kepler has an on-board H.264 encoding chip that is dedicated to that task and only that task (it doesn't borrow any processing power from anywhere else), so the only thing that impacts performance is the physical writing to the disk.

I can already tell you have no fucking clue what I'm talking about.

Reading this thread is making me fucking angry because I helped a friend setup his OBS specifically for league as well and we nailed it on the first attempt.

Assuming you are playing a game using fullscreen, borderless windowed or a game that uses a launcher client like LoL:

Do not EVER use
>Add -> Monitor Capture
because it runs like ass unless Aero is turned off.

Instead, use
>Add -> Game Capture -> [DWM] Monitor Capture
because it is monitor capture except it is GPU accelerated

Using this will solve all your fucking problems especially with League
