Does a worthy alternative to the Apple Retina Macbook Pro exist?

PROTIP: It doesn't.

Nah, the top laptops from Lenovo and Dell cost the same. Will buy my first macbook this month.
>>
Pretty much anything, considering you're only getting 1.8ghz out of that overheating piece of shit.

Just get a XPS 13 or M8300 and install the new Kubuntu if you want a better experience.

Yes, any laptop which doesn't heat up to 90-100 degrees Celsius and that doesn't get keyboard uncomfortably hot to touch.

Which model? There isn't any viable alternative to the 15'', but practically every 13.3'' ultrabook on the market is comparable to or surpasses the rMBP.

The 13'' rMBP wasn't even cutting edge when it finally got released. Still powered by integrated Intel graphics, and 2560x1600 isn't top of the line anymore.

Most ultrabooks for the same price have a 3200x1800 display and also operate as a tablet.

Almost any *big* brand have something better than the rMBP toaster. Just depende on what kind of thing you want. Dells and Lenovos are really good, but a lenovo tends last more.
In my case acer is also a good brand, mine still working pretty well, but isn't as recommended as dell and lenovo.
I think that the retina isn't a good choice for the great majority.

That's why there are 2560x1600 and 2844x1600 displays right?
And 1920x1200 and 2133x1200.

>this is entirely subjective
No it isn't. Text is horizontal. On a Tablet or Convertible in vertical mode 16:10 is more like the aspect ratio of paper than 16:9 which is too narrow.
>>
>>46624482
>$800

At that price point none of the Envy models can compare to rMBP. The issue with you idiots is that you guys bitch about Mac pricing and cite base level laptops from other manufacturers that absolutely cannot compete in any catagory that the Macbooks do.

An $800 HP laptop will get you 2 hours of battery life with 4 GB of RAM, not exactly mind blowing.
>>
>>46625488
The only comparable laptop is the XPS 13, good luck with that trackpad though.

Macs are shit until they do something about the OS.

OSX Snow Leopard was the perfect OS. Apple have no gone full retard by introducing a bunch of random shit that is just pure shit. I would not have upgraded if I wasn't starting to run into trouble with programs that no longer ran on Snow Leopard.

Case in point: I am securely deleting trash at the moment. I used to do this on Snow Leopard and it would take minutes to hours. I have had it running for 4 days now and I still have 174 items to go. My HDD is only 140GB so I can't be deleting anything that is terribly large.
>>
>>46625464
1440x900 vs 1600x900
2880x1800 (MBPr) vs 3200x1800 (Dell Precisions, Razer Blade)

It is entirely relative to the application and whatever the panel manufacturer's decided to put together. There is no argument for any aspect ratio beyond personal preference (ignoring the golden ratio retards)

>>46625535
For a PC monitor at the same PPI the 16:9 resolution in that case would be better. But we are talking about laptops so at the same PPI a laptop would have to be wider. So on laptops 16:9 almost always means less work-space unless you are actually willing to work at 1:1 scale which I can assume is very enjoyable with high ppi displays.

I've used some and was forced to use its OS during college.
Really, that's nothing all that great about it and it really takes away a person's freedom when it comes to customization.

I will buy a MBP with student discount and 3 year extended warranty, I think at that price it's unbeatable. Plus from what I've seen from others, ironically is that the MBP retina is just about the best machine you can run Windows on too.

Daily reminder that Linux is salty he couldn't work at Apple (unless he dropped his hobby kernel), and got extra salty when the architecture he was fighting against (micro/hybrid kernels) became 5x more popular than his "superior" solution.

I.e., admitting that Apple won, would mean Tanenbaum was right all along calling the Linus kernel a quick and dirty hack, obsolete by design.

And thus he goes on and makes all those inane comments about Apple's architecture choices (hybrid kernel, HFS+ filesystem, etc.).
