workspaces on OSX are fluid as fuck, you need never look at the fucking "launchpad" ever. it's the classic "bucket with almost all my shit in it so i can look at it all at the same time and poke at it a bit with folders." Stupid. There is another depreciated "feature" called dashboard (faggot applets) which is on it's way out. Won't be surprised if they both disappear soon.
"Spotlight search" pretty much ripped off everything that ever worked about launchers and between it and the sweet trackpad you can navigate through your entire OS at the speed of thought as if it was a map of your fucking neural network made digital. Glorious shit.

I use huge icons in my start menu because I have my mouse sensitivity set to very high and I move extremely rapidly about the screen. I have no time to be accurate. From clicking on the start menu to opening an application should take no longer than 1/4 second.

Windows: Just PuTTY and FileZilla, with taskbar containing Firefox, file explorer, control panel, Steam, fb2k and the default sticky notes app
Gentoo: KDE favorites menu only holds system settings while my panel has launchers for Firefox, Dolphin and Konsole (Steam gets a dedicated workspace, Guake is bound to the right-click menu button to summon ncmpcpp)

Apple always took stuff from gnome project also unity - 'new' titlebars and file manager for example and many more, but with unity they couldn't even steal their global menu as good as it is in unity so titlebar actually integrates with menubar and top panel and only when its needed which saves vertical space much better.
