It's just another plot to make pictures completely unviewable for privacy conscious individuals who use NoScript. Oh you don't want to be spied on and tracked on every site you go to? Then you can't see our pictures, fucker! It's absolutely terrible and disgusting how the modern web has been perverted.

How does this compare to h.265 or the like? I know its not video compression, but frame to frame video compression is 4th dimensional picture compression.

What's the problem with using pictures for pictures demo? Would an arrangement of pixels on the screen in any other way not be just as effective for the demoing? Then it doesn't matter if it stays with the same picture.

Are you serious? Using a pornographic photograph of a naked women is not an acceptable standard demo picture. How would you feel if computer science was dominated by women, and the standard image was some stud's dick?

It is a subset of h265 (the single key frame part, I assume)

It is actually smaller than HEVC because it doesn't need as much headers.

And apparently hardware decoders are in their way, so javascript decoders won't be needed in the future. Browsers already support h.264 so h.265 won't be a problem, and with it, this codec.

It's too flat.

I propose gay furry porn.

Neat image format by the way. Wish I'd stick. Seems all the formats that are better than Jpeg (Jpeg2000, Jpeg XR, possibly this as well) can't penetrate the marked enough.

By the way, what does it use, besides DCT and arithmetic coding?
>>
BPG may be the technically superior format, but it's patent encumbered.

I'd rather use webp or wait for Daala still images to get popular.

I think I'm gonna spam the guys at mozilla to ask them to give more money to Daala.
>>
>>45495865
You could just, like, not base your business in a country with software patents.
>>
>>45495921

say you're a woman in science, and this is discouraging to you... then there's no place for you in science in the first place

if you want more women in science, you start with a good elementary school education, really, really good!

percentage of women in science highly positively correlates with elementary school knowledge of STEM basic subjects
>>
>>45495960
Because software patents dying any time soon is only wishful thinking.

Patent encumbered technologies dying is practically the norm. I certainly haven't used a MP3 in a long time. FLAC or Opus, ogg maybe.

I'll just try to stay practical. If a superior technology dies, the idea will stay and people will reinvent it differently until the patent expires.
>>
>>45494975
Trolling aside, why does a naked woman invariably indicate oppression and sexism? Why are women unable to appreciate the female form? Isn't that internalized misogyny? Lol
>>
>>45495340
The intra-frame compression of HEVC is the "god tier" algorithm for compression. Any other (until now) have best compression ratio of this. But, any browser have support for this yet...
>>
>>45495998
>Because software patents dying any time soon is only wishful thinking.
Same with patented technology. As long as the law will permit a way to screw another human being, people will be screwing each other in said way.
>I certainly haven't used a MP3 in a long time. FLAC or Opus, ogg maybe.
Well the situation is quite different with video codecs. VP8 is much inferior to H.264 and theora is inferior to both. I haven't seen a comparison of VP9, H.265 and Daala, but I won't be surprised it'll be the same history again.

Also, wasn't there a case that VP8 actually uses some patented technology?
>I'll just try to stay practical.
The practical thing to me is to use H.264 and similar and laugh at MPEG-LA, the US government and their silly games.
>>
to those talking about patents, jpeg is patent encumbered as well, isn't it?

it's not like we'd be going backwards replacing jpeg with this
>>
>>45496054
>Also, wasn't there a case that VP8 actually uses some patented technology?
True, but it's more of a theoretical issue.

>The practical thing to me is to use H.264 and similar and laugh at MPEG-LA, the US government and their silly games.
That's pretty much what I do. I use H.264 as long as it doesn't help keep H.264 alive. Everywhere else I use VPX and wait for Daala.

The Daala work is very promising, they are trying to port the revolutionary ideas of constrained energy from Opus (Audio) to Video. They are very innovative and already achieve comparable efficiency with modern codecs.
>>
>>45496093
Software patents are a theoretical issue. Has anyone been harassed by MPEG-LA for using MPEG codecs?
>The Daala work is very promising, they are trying to port the revolutionary ideas of constrained energy from Opus (Audio) to Video. They are very innovative and already achieve comparable efficiency with modern codecs.

Do you know a that a .gif loaded with javascript can be used to do XSS attacks?

I experimented a few months ago and I developed a javascript gif spyware. The trick is using gif headers as function values.

Women need go get the hell back into the kitchen. They need to serve their purpose in society and raise children correctly.

The entire feminist movement has just about single handedly caused this degradation of western society that we all see every day. While women are out being "independent" with their "careers", the children they are irresponsibly conceiving are being raised by a television playing Jersey Shore re-runs.

And we wonder why NASA doesent have a fucking space program anymore. Goddamn women being allowed to wear shoes.

maybe if i ran a popular website serving large amounts of images to end-users. maybe, but it'd have to be natively supported by web browsers.

You seem familiar with those fags at The Verge. Your reasoning is in line
>>
>>45496481
It doesn't have to be natively supported by browsers. You can send the data to the client as .bpg, decode it with javascript and render it as a an image with inline data.
>>
>>45496964
Actually that's exactly how it's done at:
http://bellard.org/bpg/lena.html
>>
>>45496996
But the .bpg data is not cached and is redownloaded every time a user visits/refreshes the page which makes this an inferior option since even though the .bpg format makes images 10 times smaller, the user will likely visit the page more than 10 times.
Thus browser support IS required.
>>
>>45497042
Wait, can't you cache arbitrary data via local store?
I see a bigger problem with low power devices.
>>
>>45497060
Looks like you can. I stand corrected.
.bpg might already be a viable option but further testing with a large amount of images on various devices would be required.
