I'm thinking about getting a SSD myself. My gaymin laptop is pretty fast, but sometimes it takes a while to get going after a cold boot and applications load a little more slowly than I'd like them to.

Would a SSD alleviate those problems? Would it have a noticeable impact on battery life?

>>

It will boost your boot times by quite a bit and tend to reduce lag upon program launch, though the boot time reduction is the only "for sure" effect of the SSD.

For a new build you might as well get one. Its nice that PS starts in 2 secs instead of 6 secs but thats almost all there is to it compared to a 7k rpm HDD

Daily reminder computer bus is bottleneck for your SSD, SSD have same speed as 7200/10000/10025/10500RPM and little lower than 15000RPM HDD (but HDD had lowed price 15k 146gb ~26$) than connect as SATA1/2/3.
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/internal-hard-drive/#t=0,10000,10025,10500,15000&sort=a6

Only connecting via PCI-E and SATA3.2(maybe?) make your SSD better than HDD.

the term 'retina' is cringy, but this is bullshit. A rMBP's screen is fucking gorgeous compared to the old 1400x900 displays. Same as comparing your old 600x480 monitor to a 1920x1080 monitor.

it does but not by a substantial amount most of the time. if you pay for your electricity overclocking is pointless.

It only actually helps on bloated Windows. GNU/Linux boots fast even on the slowest of hard drives.
>>
>>45234461
This pretty much, although there are certain variables.

Any SSD will pretty much rejuvenate any PC in the last 10 years, but to really reap the benefits it can't be running on a single core Celeron using fucking SATA I and expect a tremendous improvement, it'll be a big one, sure, but that's usually because the hard drive on those components was slow as shit and probably dying anyway, so anything would make it better.

It's always much better to just go with a medium-tier overclockable CPU and get an SSD (like the G3258), than going i7-3770k or whatever's the hottest new thing right now and still run a hard drive.

Also OCing helps tremendously.

Has anyone ever tried ocing a hard disk? What If I made it spin at more rpm? What would be the outcome?

Actually, no.
Having a nice pair of speakers and a good DAC (from a good sound card or external) makes a difference.

I am looking to get some decent hi-fi speakers and amp.

if I want to play from my PC you would recommend using a dac between the amp and PC?

I have a Xonar Sound card isnt that doing the same job already?

thanks
>>
>>45239283
I can't really help you, man.
My setup is a modified Logitech Z-2300, from which I replaced the speakers with a pair of Cabasse Antiguas, using custom-soldered RCA to bare wire copper cables.
I'm playing all my music from my PC through the jack output of the X-Fi Titanium sound card in there. That sound card has an amplified DAC, and combined with the power provided by the Z-2300 kit, I don't need any external amp.
Windows volume @ ~25% + Z-2300 at a quarter of available power is loud enough.

internal sound cards are the biggest placebo of all time unless you have a 10 year old mobo that doesn't into 5.1 channel surround sound. Most recent ones have 8 channel.

external recording interfaces are a bit different

I know this is massive b8 but none the less I will have to say moving a game from hdd to sdd doubled my fps at 1080p for many games meaning my mid-tier laptop plays 60fps in modern games beyond it's scope.
Difficult to believe that's the placebo effect.

>>

>>
>>45245536
More surface area to dissipate heat. Do you not understand the purpose of a heatsink in general? I'll admit that those are excessive, but it still serves the same purpose.
>>
>>45245536
larger surface area for better cooling
>>
>>45245590
>>45245645

But, are heatsinks actually neccesary? I have
DDR2
Ram on this shitrig, and it doesn't have any heatskins. It's just the RAM.
>>
>>45245675
next time your machine has been in use for awhile, shut it down and touch the heatsinks with your finger. They do get surprisingly warm.
>>
>>45245777
Sorry, I misread your post. Ram does get warm
>>
>>45232971

If you're using Windows 7, there's already a service called SuperFetch, that takes files you access frequently, and loads them into RAM for a more responsive experience. Assuming you already have this enabled, you shouldn't see much performance gains at all for general purpose things. Now, SSDs do still have faster read/write speeds, and a way faster access time, but Microsoft has already done a pretty good job with their modern OSs when it comes to improving performance for those with mechanical drives.
>>
>>45245391
you do realise that "ssd" is not a brand name, don't you? It literally stands for solid state drive. There's no brand affiliation, there
>>
>>45245590
>>45245645
To what end?
Generic heatsinkless RAM = best RAM
>>
>>45245675
No they're not. Yes it gets warm, but it doesn't affect anything like the lifespan or CPU overclocks. If anything, bigger heatsinks would make the heat spread more to other components, but that's pretty negligible anyway.
