Hi /g/, long time lurker, first time OP here
I'm a third year computer science student. I've had C, C++, Java and Visual Basic, and now I want to learn Python. I have a few basic questions:
How hard would Python be to learn for someone with my (almost entirely OOP) background?
What compiler would /g/ recommend?
I'm *leaning* towards a bachelor specialty/masters in cybersecurity. Is it true that Python would be a very valuable language to learn for that field?
Is it a useful language to become proficient in, from a career/job skills perspective?
Does Python have a "preferred operating system", i.e. an OS that most of its programming is done for?
Thanks
Python can be learned in 2 hours.

CS students ladies and gentlemen

Makes me doubt your claimed knowledge of C, C++ and Java.
Do it.
I can recommend codecadamy.com.

Either you are pursuing your degree at the University of Phoenix or you are lying.

Fucking hell. Is education really just a scam these days?
>cybersecurity
/g/oogle it ffs

You should use le Cython compiler. It compiles your code to basically machine code, which is a language that machines understand but no one really programs in called C.
To do le epin hackz you must know Python. Everything is written in python with the exception of old tools no one has bothered to rewrite which are still C or anything to do with gooeys, which are still written in Visual Basic
If you want a job learn le Ruby On Rails though.
I question that you're a long time lurker if you're asking what OS python is for, like everything it is for Gentoo.
If you have not already, I highly recommend you switch to it. Don't use a VM, just install it.

I'll take your word for it.

Nope.

I'm not sure why I wrote that since I meant to say IDE. Too late since this thread is fucked now.
I'll try again tomorrow

You're not helping yourself out here.

/g/ falls for trolls so easily. No, this guy is not really a 3rd year cs student.

Better just make a 360 degree turn and walk away from here

it just gets better and better

Eclipse.
>>45166977
no, netbeans, pleb
>>45166977

For python? Seems like overkill. Eclipse is probably bigger than whole python distribution.
>>45167107
i was joking
>why are you even answering
>>45167186
Because in my uni eclipse is used even for python... feels stupid
Use visual studio with Python tools.

i recommend Kate
IDEs really suck

thanks for clearing that up, I had no idea what you meant by operating system

What's wrong with that question?
>>45167342
i was also wondering about this
>>45167441
even notepad can handle python
syntax highlighting is the only thing that won't make you an code illiterate
all other features all pure overkill

Question: What's an IDE?
Answer: Something Java developers need to make their language tolerable.
