I build custom desktops and servers for small businesses and set up their networks. Also websites and "IT".
The amount of SMBs that are wanting to upgrade from Windows XP Pentium D/4 machines to Windows 7 and decent specs are pretty active and my main business clients. Put in an inexpensive 120gig SSD and store all their files to a network server, it stays speedy and they're super happy because they know these desktops will last as long as their XP machines.

I'm a contractor so technically i work for someone else, but the retailer buys my services (three of us actually) from my employer. My employer provides and maintains an internal system to control the briefing, review and upload of art to the coders as well as the appropriate staff (such as myself) to fulfill the artwork/code orders the coordinators require.
Not that bad really. There's a big reality show on right now that the retailer sponsors so requested artwork has shot up recently to keep up with developments in the show, so there's plenty of work to be done and the day passes quickly.

Search technology engineering for a SaaS provider in this field. It's a small company, but it's been around for more than 5 years and it's profitable, so I wouldn't call it a startup any more. It still has the relaxed, friendly, free atmosphere, which is one of the things I appreciate most in a job.
I spend my days mostly with Java. Before you start hating, this is the ecosystem with the best enterprise-grade libraries to get search going in a well-performing way.

The SSD's are only like $60 for a 120gig SSD with Sandforce controllers from Sandisk or PNY or a decent Kingston.
The usage is typically turns on at 8am, turns off at 5pm, uses the browser, just about all documents and files used are used by the Server network drives. Defragment schedule and indexing is disabled. Only files typically written to it are for the setup installation files for browsers, plugins, AV, quickbooks, office, and reader.

Also WIndows 7 won't be supported very long. They will upgrade and typically upgrade their machines with them.
Some HDDs don't last that many years in a work environment anyways and replacing a SSD in 5-7 years for $30-40 isn't a bad trade for their constant speed in usage.
There is a lot of time wasted in waiting for the computer to do stuff. That's fully paid off for itself with a SSD in the time they save over several years.
There is also less risk due to mechanical issue from the HDD failing due to factory issue or by someone knocking over the tower while on.
All in all, it's not as bad as you make it. It works well for those 5-6 years with a minor cost to replace the SSD drive, that they will not need cause they will replace the whole tower to upgrade to new CPU and ram speeds. Every SMB I come across does a major upgrade every 5-6 years or so to their desktops.

I live in Florida. Even if the computers aren't more than 7 years old, the hardware speed is. Dell towers with Pentium 4s and Windows XP everywhere. Most of them is because they are or were stuck on XP because of custom made programs written for XP written for some fox programming environment made for Windows XP that isn't used anymore. I see it everywhere. Forgot it's name. Many of them are moving to different solutions, some times "cloud" applications for their business while still using quickbooks, office, and file shares.
As for servicing them more often, we'll see about that. I'll be keeping statistics of what parts were in each computer and when they were given to the company. Willing to bet they last to their expected year usage with little service.
Even as a business owner, I want more business, but more new ones, and less returning ones for issues with things I give them. I like the promise of set and forget with background hidden automatic maintenance settings to avoid issues.
Does it give me less work to do? Yes, but I get a glowing response from business owners and they refer me to other business owners. I don't try to have purposely dirty business tactics to get returning customers.

Neither of those are your higher end options, but honestly some of the better gear isn't suited for the average person. If you want to get into building coils and having some real fun look into a Nemesis clone or Chi-You or any DNA30 device.

I live in my parent's basement and go to community college. I start real college in the Spring semester where I will major in accounting. After that, probably get a masters in financial analysis. I plan on working with large datasets, do math and statistics type stuff, computer simulations, visualizations, business intelligence, etc. in the business world. Or maybe that'll turn out to be much harder to break into than I thought and I'll still have my accounting degree and a lot of mostly useless knowledge about computers, programming, and statistics.
