So I just bought a thinkpad, my first one. Apparently it is not as powerful as I thought it would be and also I didn't get as good of a deal as I thought I was.

>t510
>second gen i7
>8gb ram
>500 gb hdd
$260

Could someone post the /g/ guide?
Also where is a good place to order parts?
Should I replace factory hdd with a ssd, or just add a caddy with one. I have so many questions.

Thinkpad regrets:
>2007
>I want my first "own" computer instead of using the shitty family Gateway tower
>scrounge up $100
>look on eBay
>find a promising entry, 366mhz Pentium 2, 13GB HD, 128MB RAM, will boot to BIOS but seller has no idea what's wrong with it, no pictures, seller has good feedback
>buy it since the other laptops in that time and price range were 233mhz, 64MB RAM, etc.

>it's a Thinkpad 770Z in terrific physical condition
>the problem with it was just that the HD was formatted and empty, installing Windows 98 was a breeze
>it worked great for a while, absolutely beautifully as a simple web browsing/SNES emulator/Half Life/Age of Empires 2 machine

>get greedy
>look into upgrading
>get an old 256MB stick of RAM for 10 bucks, it drops right in and system boots right up with 320MB
>Oh, look, these things can take a CPU upgrade too
>buy an MMX Pentium 3 600mhz online for like another 10 bucks
>disassemble laptop
>get more and more nervous as I realize how many layers I have to delve into this machine to get to the CPU socket, it's nowhere near as simple as the RAM
>suddenly screws start getting stripped instead of coming out cleanly
>use too much force, feel a creak inside the case, get more nervous
>keyboard cable won't go back in
>finally get computer back in one piece
>press power button
>nothing, no BIOS, no lights, no beeps, he's dead Jim

>throw the computer in the trash

How bad did I fuck up? All I can say to defend myself is it was a 1024x768 machine and not one of the 1280x1024 units.

I also remember that it was absurdly heavy. Like, it wasn't even a physically *large* machine, but the damn thing was so heavy and dense I had a hard time putting it in it's carrying case with one hand. When I disassembled it, I never was able to find the cinderblock or hunk of lead that IBM hid in there...

Anyone else have something like that slip through their fingers when they were too young or careless to realize it?

Better battery life
Better screen resolution, aspect ratio and color quality

Much better build quality, they gladly dropped it on stage when demonstrating in the Microsoft keynote, lenovo isn't even this confident in their product's durability.

X201 is 1280x800 resolution while X220 is 1366x768, which means the X220 is really skinny in portrait mode. Also the X201 can take up to an 8-cell battery while the biggest for the X220 is 6-cell.

I think the X201 uses low-voltage CPU's though.

I haven't purchased a second pen yet, but reading through reviews there seems to be good aftermarket ones, yes.

> Years ago have 8.9" eeePC 900 with 1.6GHz Atom, 1GB of RAM, GMA 900
> Best portable machine I have ever owned
> Tiny as fuck at 8.9", but still has a screen big enough to browse the web and type fairly comfortably
> Fucking 9 hour battery life if I underclock
> Runs Windows FLP like a champ

I never thought I would find another machine that would make me as happy as that one did until the day I stumbled upon an X60s in a pawnshop complete with ultrabase for $90 a couple years ago

> Max out the RAM at 3GB
> Throw in cheap 60GB SSD
> Replace dying battery with $30 ching chong replacement from Amazon

Now I have a 12" 4:3 ultraportable that will get 4 hours of battery life with wifi on, is extremely light, and the 1.6GHz Core Duo is fast enough to browse the web, do productivity shit, watch 720p video, and play the occasional game of Quake III.

The only downsides are the screen, 1024x768 is pretty weak, but the only websites that I have had h-scroll issues on have been shitty webforums. I wish it was brighter, though. Even at max it's still pretty dim.

I still need to flash my bios so I can remove the whitelist and replace my wifi card though, the stock one runs stupid hot for some reason.

Also I wish I could have found one with a 3G antenna, but for the price I paid it was certainly worth what I got.

Is it possible to purchase the 3G antenna and card and install it myself?
>>
>>43139477
The part with the trackpad and fingerprint reader can be swapped out. You can get a replacement piece without the fingerprint reader if you want. My T60p doesn't have a fingerprint reader but it's possible for the T60p to have a fingerprint reader. My T420 does have a fingerprint reader.
>>
>>43139654
I've heard good things about either Xubuntu or Lubuntu having digitizer support out of the box.

My personal favorite distro is CrunchBang, but I'm not sure how it does with drivers. My hardware is pretty normal.
>>
>>43140109
The Eee PC 900 didn't come with a 1.6GHz Atom. You may have had the 901. The 900 came with a 900MHz Celeron.
>>
>>43140214

Why do people talk about "out of the box" support like it actually matters? Are there really people out there that are too lazy to spend 10 seconds editing a config file?

On gentoo all I needed to do to get the digitizer working was install xf86-input-wacom and add the devices to my xorg.conf
>>
>>43140249
I've honestly never manually installed any drivers aside from the GPU driver. If I didn't get great out of the box support I would probably have a really bad time. That's one of the reasons I haven't moved to something like Arch yet.

Sorry, but I don't into cars. Technology analogies should be related to technology if possible. And, no. It's more like you had an improved version. The most simple model number is clearly the original. It's like you had the 900 v2 but they didn't know they'd end up making it so they didn't call the 900 v1. That's why you had the 900A not the 900B.

I helped a fellow seller advertise his A31p as the UXGA model by adding the type number and me giving him the specs of it, he sold it for $120

>>43140886
Hmmm no, because the T420s has a different chassis than the T420, some parts are not interchangable. It would make sense if you were comparing a T61 and T61p.

The T420 and S model differences would be along the lines of the Cadillac CTS-V coupe and Wagon versions.
T420 being the Wagon and the T420s being the coupe, though engine, most of the interior, engine and other components are interchangable, but the whole wagon part sets it much different.

So earlier today I took a shower, and just as I came out, I typed out a Skype message on my X220 while I was still dripping wet. After all, the keyboard is spill-proof, right?

Just over an hour ago I noticed my fingerprint reader stopped working - I couldn't log in to Windows using it. Instead, the yellow LED comes on for about 10 seconds, then the orange LED flashes indicating a 'login failure'. This keeps happening on its own, I didn't have my hands anywhere near the fingerprint reader, but it still kept doing that, as if there was some invisible finger swiping it. The reader itself also feels warm for some reason.

It was still working fine about 4 hours after I typed that Skype message.

What do? I've disabled the reader in Device Manager, just to prevent further damage to it (since it was getting warm, I'm hoping it's not some kind of water damage).

I still have about 150 days of warranty left on this machine.
>>
>>43144216
Keyboard and palmrest are CRUs - call Lenovo, just tell them that your keyboard intermittently doesn't work and fingerprint reader stopped working, and you'd like to replace them.

You can also use the same excuse for worn out/shiny keycaps.

You might of had some moisture from your palm that clocked up the reader, so the water must be shorting it out...
I'd remove the palmrest and let it dry out, there may be some dirt or grime that mixed with the moisture that is interfering with the connection which is making the fingerprint reader unsucessful.

Clean it with a Q-tip of rubbing alcohol, let it dry and it should be fine.

Do you have it as an auction or as a buy it now?
Auction will sell better, seriously, I had two W500's and no one wanted to buy them at $180, but I let one go to auction and it sold for $240 the next week.

I'd recommend it as an auction, I will be selling pic related soon.
I hope to sell them for $220 each.
>>
>>43154586
buy it now for $850 or best offer
I would put it as an auction but I don't want to wake up and see it only sold for $500 or something, and putting a reserve is always a big repellent for potential buyers
>>
>>43152863
they need to bring back the old keyboard. how hard would it be to offer it as an option?
>>
>>43154674
I think the old keyboard accounted for at least 50% of the Thinkpad's sexiness.
>>
>>43154613
Hmmm...

Checking the sold listings on eBay, there are a few that sold for $500, but others have been going $700 and up, a few up to $1200.

How do you have it listed?
>Lenova X230 Thibkpad
>Lenovo X230T/ Tablet ThinkPad i7, SSD, Windows, LOADED
>Thinkpad laptup

eBay and Paypal will take 15% of your profits I think, plus the shipping price. Do not offer global shipping, the buyer may say some BS about not wanting to pay the GSP price, fuck them, because you'll have to deal with that shit for a week, then ask for a cancellation from eBay, risking a bad rating, AND have to deal with the 10% ebay will take for what its sold for and then refund you at a later date...
>>
>>43154702
>15% of your profits

no fucking way that's insane
>>
>>43154674
>>43154696

Seriously.

Chicklet keyboards are objectively shit, and it's fucking stupid that everyone is putting them in their laptops now.

How hard is it to make a solid, dependable, business-class laptop with the old Thinkpad build quality?

Lenovo can suck a bag of dicks.
>>
>>43154721
I think I am overexaggerating but it feels that it is that much.

5% from paypal, 10% from ebay I think as a new seller.
I sold a T4x screen for $20 with free shipping and it cost me about $15 to ship it lol
>>
>>43154702
here, just look at the listing for yourself
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261536134259
I'm fully aware of how much eBay takes. I never ship internationally after having a scare when sending an iPhone to Russia (it got held up in customs and the buyer made a claim which resulted in the money being automatically refunded to him)

>>43154721
I think eBay takes around 12% these days. Paypal takes a couple percent
>>
>>43154860
Hmmmmm, maybe it would help that you can post photos of the unit on with the what it shows on the BIOS.
Maybe an OS on there, Linux won't hurt, and maybe a photo of it with a nice background screen saver so that the display looks flawless, also note that the nick in the corner is not noticable under normal use.

Just say it has light wear and tear, no need to go into the details (edge on corner, keyboard shine) or tell them to look in the photos.

You gotta make the thing look badass!
Maybe people are turning away from it because it isn't "ready" with out an OS.

I install Windows 7 on all my machines, put photoshop, office 2010, mph-hc, Honeyview, cd ripper, plus other crap to make it look good.
I've only had one upset customer because I listed the wrong size on the HDD, refunded them a bit for a SSD, didn't get any feedback so thats a plus..

As far as shipping goes, I dunno how you will ship it but it might not fit in the flatrate box that goes for $14, but the one the gameboard box that goes for $18, that and you'll have to factor the cost of bubblewrap and peanuts.

Good luck.
>>
>>43155056
I'm thinking I'll send the listing to auction and add a reserve, even though when I personally see a reserve I don't even bother. A BIOS pic is a good idea and I'll add that. installing Windows 7 would be a good idea too but that's just soooo much work and I'm sooo lazy. I'll see about taking out the explicit details about the wear because it does make it sound in worse condition than it is. I'm fairly confident it'll fit in the flat-rate box.
>>
>>43155103
go for it, if you had bought it, I wouldn't put the starting price at 99 cents, screw that, too much of a risky gamble.

the reserve price is bad, yeah, but maybe list your price near the reserve u want.
Another thing is that I queue some of my auctions, I don't want one to end at 2AM, I want it to end around 5PM PST, I don't know when eBay users are most frequent but less people are least likely to stay up for an auction sometimes, or get up early.

I had a nice 15.4" Ti-Lid Z60m that sold as a buy it now for $140, I only put $50 into it (30 for laptop, battery and hdd from other parts laptops) and I expected it to sell for $70 but no, someone bought it outright with the buy it now option. The lid was very nice, hadn't flaked badly.

Yeah, I saw one for $75 also, but didn't include hard drive and hard drive caddy. I mean, these come with like 512MB-1GB ram, which can be upgrade, but the issue and bottleneck is the CPU; these Pentium Ms won't cut it.

W510 and above have some throttling issues that rival Precision and Elitebooks don't have
There was an anon who had a W520 or W530 which slid from their car's hood but didn't seem to be damaged that badly.
They are also kinda heavy, but it might not matter if you want MUH GAEMS.

W701 was a desktop replacement, I don't think it is worth it for gaming... But the digitizer on the touchpad is cool.
