/g/, i'm putting my faith in you
I have a spending limit of $600 for a laptop. I know that's cheap as hell but I can't do anything about it. I need a laptop that'll last 4+ years through college and can handle basic tasks (browsing, typing papers, streaming, torrenting, but not gaming). I've looked into Thinkpads post 2012, but from what I've heard they're shit. Refurbished/used laptops also probably wouldn't be a good idea because that's taking a chance that the laptop won't break on me halfway through college.
It should also be noted that I do have a desktop I'm taking with me to do all the heavylifting, but it's practically a necessity to have a laptop for the major I'm pursuing.

>>

>>
>>43017944
$600 is plenty, I just spent $160 on an e4300 Latitude. Its doing really well, 4GB RAM, 160GB on the HDD and should work for the basic tasks you need. With $600 you could get a bitchin laptop
>>
>>43015813
I like that my t60 and x31 falll into God tier even though they are ancient.
>>
No need for any mobile devices. I live in what is practically an efficiency apartment, so my desktop is literally just a few feet away from me at all times.

I'm not very fond of mobile technology. It's often too difficult to service due to everything being soldered onto the motherboard or requiring very proprietary parts that aren't interchangeable with other brands / types. If one major component fails, all you're left with is a very expensive paperweight.
>>
>>43015813
But I do own a PowerBook G4, OP.
>>
>>43018044
Acer is the closest you can get to buying a steaming pile of shit in a box.

>Refurbished/used laptops also probably wouldn't be a good idea because that's taking a chance that the laptop won't break on me halfway through college.

In the ThinkPad threads, nearly every poster there bought their ThinkPads used/secondhand. They are very sturdy and well-built machines, which is why they're recommended.

At most the corners will look a bit worn down from being carried in a bag or something, might be a scuff on the lid, the keys and trackpad might look used.

I bought two used ThinkPads and they were both in perfect condition, except for one has a small crack in the corner of the palm rest, which I could replace for $20. Not to mention replacing it is extremely easy, only a few screws and it slides right off.

I bought them for $250 and $350. You won't find a better deal than that.

>>
>>43019668
Except how long have you had them?
And where can I buy these used laptops without having to worry about getting something totally fucked up? The appeal of buying a new laptop is knowing what you're going to get. Buying something used online is always a toss up - you could get lucky and find something that is in great condition, or you could find something on its deathbed.
>>
>>43019755
wait for a clearance or an amazing back-to-school sale.

or suck it up and buy a manufacturer-refurbished (i.e. Lenovo Outlet) but those are still usually pricey and at your budget, you'll have a shitty 1366x766 screen (those are not considered customer replacaelbe otiether)

I recommend the 13"-14" latitudes. The optical drive is removable and you can put an extra battery or hdd in the slot. I bought an e6220 2 years ago and it didn't have that feature. The 14" latitudes are huge at 5+ lbs. My dad has an e6430. I now have an e7440 and it's great. It came with an mSATA ssd so I can put an extra ssd/hdd in the other slot. Wish it could hold another battery, though.

I like it. All the latitude keyboards within the past 5 years are the same. Minor flex, though. I can only compare to a 10 year old Inspiron (shit), 5 year old studio (shit), xps from last year (poor button placement, chiclet - didn't like)

Because I have an ASUS that I bought 2 years ago for HARDCORE GAMING like WoW and LoL. Now that I'm a little more knowledgable, I haven't really seen a need to get a new laptop. It can play every game I've wanted to try with decent graphics and w/o lagging. Why change what works? In 2 years when I commission I'll probably get myself a graduation present, then I'll research some more

I currently have a boner for the Dell XPS 13-9333

>Intel® Core™ i7-4650U
>8GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600Mhz
>Intel® HD Graphics 5000
>256GB Solid State Drive
>Wireless & Bluetooth
>34cm (13.3”) LED Backlit Touch Display with Truelife and FHD resolution (1920 x 1080)

I want a machine which is small, light, reasonably powerful, power-efficient, and which is *very* FOSS-friendly (i.e. not nVidia graphics, and preferably not a dual-GPU solution). They even sell this model with Ubuntu pre-installed, which suggests that it is at least GNU/Linux friendly. I probably won't get it for a couple of months, but my PhD stipend at the moment is *ridiculously* good, so I can easily afford the £999.
