So, I'm considering in getting I3 or FX.
Not sure which i3 should get, but I'm thinking about i3-4150
Not sure about FX too, but I'm thinking about FX-6300
Price limit is up to 120 euros for CPU.
So I ask your advice.
I don't want after buying it be like "FUCK, x CPU sucks, I wish I could change that to other one."
imo i3 has nice upgrade path, and AMD is kinda outdated.
AMD has very nice overclocking.

I would use it for gaming, Arma 2, War Thunder, Project Zomboid, Total war and etc.
Maybe playing around with Unreal Engine 4, but not sure if requirements would be good enough.
i3 is dual core, but has 2 threads in each core. Does that make it kinda quad-core?

So if there is kind based anon, and has nothing to do, would appreciate help. Thanks in advance!
>>
>>52136076
For games, the i3 is a clear winner.
You're paying a premium though, but that's mainly because there's no competition

I have a binary value in C, like 23, or 10111

In an 8bit unsigned integer that would be 00010111

What I'd like to figure out, using C, is how can I count the number of bits that are significant? In this instance, it is 5, as removing the unimportant left-bits leaves 10111, 5 bits with a significant value.

I'd like to be able to do this with any arbitrary integer. Any suggestions towards and approach? I was thinking bitmask towards the LSB, stop when I hit a 1, and count the remaining bits.

Help appreciated.

Go and check what H97/Z97 mobos are on sale in your area. Z97 is for overclocking which you can't do but there might be one with a great value anyways.

I've never been bitten by cheap motherboards. I've ended up with boxes that couldn't be upgraded, because of a lack of slots, or unusable slots due to cable placement, but never a box that was unstable or died suddenly.

Is asrock really that bad?

im trying to get star wars the old republic running on linux mint. i tried to download wine but it fucking wont let me. someone on here told me to get playonlinux. i got it downloaded the game and it's on my harddrive. so this is what happens. i open the game with leads to a small login window, enter my shit, then it goes to the event announcement screen with a PLAY button at the bottom. problem is i click and nothing happens. a

}
>>
>>52137444
You could also try dividing and checking for the integer part of division for 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1.
The first one that returns a 1 corresponds to the significant bit.
i.e. you got 129 //128 = 1
that means all bits are significant
if you got 126 // 128 = 0
but 126 // 64 = 1, that means that one bit is not significant, the others are.

Yes.
>Do you know what you should be looking for?
I have some knowledge, but not too much. Wasn't getting deeper in tech news, because had problems with SAD and depression, so yeah.
Because I don't have shitload of money, I want to build budget.
I have GPU already, not the best but would be good. GTX 650ti 2GB.
I have 600w 80 plus bronze PSU.
So what's left is RAM, CPU and Mobo
If I take i3-4150, it will cost me 120 eur.
H97 Anniversary here costs 75 Eur
it's already 195 eur

But.. roughly trying to fit in 200 eur for MB+CPU+RAM
I know sounds cheap, butare H81 chips bad? I mean it has everything I need, and well, it's cheap(Pic related). It costs 40 Eur. Will not overclock anyways(not sure if you even can on not-K cpu). Or it's just waste MB, and will be like "tried to spend less, but got nothing"
Thanks in advance.

I've had no problems with intel's lowest chipsets. I've got two computers running the cheapest B75 motherboards I could find.

Only thing to watch out for in the older ones, is to make sure they have SATA 6Gb/s. Some of them don't have it and you'll need it if you ever want to use an SSD in the future.
>>
>>52138485
H81 is pretty outdated and will lack ports for future upgrades so you'll have to buy a new mobo pretty soon in the future instead of just using whatever news things you buy.

Basically, the password is used as-written when it's passed around in memory by the application.

If someone sniffed that segment of your RAM, they could discern the password just by converting bits to ASCII.

>>52140019
Well, at some point, any application has to read in the plaintext of your password.

If your machine is compromised to the point where you're worried about someone sniffing your RAM, then they might as well just be using a keylogger instead.

The only time this is really an issue is if your password is stored plaintext on disk or passed over any network in plaintext.

Consensus on silverstone SFX and Psu overall? How reliable are they? Any problems with coil whine and/or fan grinding/failing?

I'm looking to get one to power my mitx build. Pentium G3260, 2x2gb ddr3, 1 ssd and 1 hdd.

I am installing a new boot drive (Evo 850) for the first time in nearly a decade and want to make sure it is assigned as C: instead of my old OS HDD.

Current set up:
C:/ (Old windows install - WD Black) - I will be formatting this drive
E/ (Data - WD Blue) - I will be keeping the data on this drive

The process goes like this, right?

Unplug everything except for DVD / SSD
Enable AHCI in BIOS
Change boot order to removable media
Install windows to SSD
Change boot order to SSD
Plug back in old HDDs
Format old OS drive

My question is now... if I plug in my old data/os HDD's will they still be assigned C: and E:?

Also does anyone have a list of windows updates to hide (nags, antipiracy)?

Alright, here we go.

I'm upgrading my rig soon; i've got a 650W EVGA psu on the way and i'll be ordering an XFX R9 380X gpu when payday hits (I just want that security of having the extra funds).

My question is: I have a Phenom II X4 820 cpu and 16GB of DDR3 RAM. Obviously the RAM won't hinder anything at that point (especially when the card has 4GB), but how bad of a performance hit will I take from the CPU? Will the GPU make up for it? It only has an ~3500 rating on cpubenchmark as opposed to the ~6000 from an i5. I don't expect to do super ultra settings, but i'd like to play various things at high settings with good FPS. Sonic Generations, Assassin's Creed IV, Skyrim, etc.

tl;dr will a Phenom II X4 820 hold back my R9 380X significantly

Hi anon, I have found your problem!
>Im running OpenSuse 13.2
This is your main mistake. You see, OpenSUSE is a version of Linux. Linux is good for servers, and modified versions of it are used on phones and tablets- but it is no good for desktop or laptop computers. People have been trying to do so for decades now but there are just too many problems.

You need to back up your data, and install an Operating System (OS) designed for desktop/laptop use. Windows is popular, and OSX is also good if you're prepared to fiddle a bit to get it working on non-Apple hardware.

I hope this helps.

I bought this on eBay thinking it was a Source 210, however I wasn't paying attention and realized that a Source 210 looks nothing like this until after I ordered it.
I don't really mind if it's wrong anyways, it's fine with me, just curious what it is.

Bought a hard drive for my first build and it wasn't detected at all in Windows or BIOS, and I read you should feel the HDD hum when the computer is on with it hooked up and I didn't. Had a smaller spare around and it worked fine and I did feel it hum. Sent the dud back for a replacement and had the same problem with the new one. After sending the replacement back and saying I wanted a refund they said they tested it and it works fine but hadn't been initialized. So I looked into that and read the drives should've still been detected before being initialized.

So am I retarded or is there something wrong with my pc? Or are they trying to screw me out of the restocking fee, assuming I'll still want a refund instead of having them send the drive back?

This. 4160 here, runs everything perfectly. A Haswell i3 won't be the limiting factor in games until you hit around GTX980-level with the GPU (and not even then in 90% of titles).

If you're okay with cutting back the number of RAM slots and USB ports, I suggest going with a Gigabyte H81 or B85 board instead of an ASRock 9 series. I went with a GA-H81M-H and am happy with it; you'll probably want one with a header for front USB3, though.

Suggestion: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JnhBMp

PCPP gives a warning about Haswell Refresh chips, but not to worry- I checked their site for you: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=5174 and it's good to go for all Haswell chips, no update required.

And your case is more than large enough.

Put simply, it's going to take the same amount of energy to boil a given volume of water no matter the power, so you might as well apply lots in order to heat it quickly.

3000 watt kettles are standard here in the UK, because as a Brit I am culturally mandated to drink eight thousand gallons of tea every 45 seconds. Computers are low wattage devices unless you have a cryptocoin mining rig/similar.

1.1kW seems frankly embarrassingly weak. I assume your mains is 120V?

>Will it bottleneck my CPU
No offence but the way you phrased this makes me suspect you don't 100% follow what bottlenecking is.

Essentially:
* To be "bottlenecked by your CPU" means that the graphics card could go faster, but the CPU is too weak to drive it at its full potential (I.E. can't keep up with the game logic at a high enough rate)
* To be "bottlenecked by your GPU" means that the CPU could simulate the game faster, but the graphics card is too weak to render the results any faster and is running at capacity

You are always limited by one or the other. As long as the game looks good and is running smoothly enough for you, it doesn't matter. Most people prefer gaming rigs to be GPU-limited, since they feel that the potential of their expensive GPU is somewhat wasted if it isn't running at capacity. When selecting parts, one generally makes sure to select "balanced" parts- for example, there is no point going with an ultra high end i7 with a budget GPU.

To directly answer your question: Your Ivy i3 and the 960 seem like a good match to me. I expect you will be GPU-limited in 99% of games, which is what you want.

Make sure your user account is added to the sudoers list. It may or may not be by default, I haven't used Debian in ages. Like, right now, try "sudo apt-get update" and enter your password when it prompts for it. If it works, you're golden and don't have to do shit, if it says the aforementioned "your name isn't in the sudoers list" then you have to use the "su" command for root privileges and go to /etc/sudo or some shit with "nano". I don't even remember the exact spot anymore.

You can use the package manager gui or use the command line to install whatever you want from the Debian repositories. sudo apt-get install iceweasel

Also, there is no "apt-get search." You have to use "aptitude search" to search for packages. Yes, it's retarded.

You simply open the sources.list file with your text editor of choice (as root). You find that line and add "contrib non-free". The actual url may be different, though (probably http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian).

Then you use sudo apt-get update so your apt-cache can reflect the change you made.

How much do you want to spend? The Dayton B652's are the typical go-to budget speakers and can be had for $40-50/pair.

Then you have to pair them with an amplifier, examples being the classic Lepai LP2020A for $20-30 or the SMSL SA50 for $60-70.

The Lepai + Dayton combo is a pretty barebones combo, but still a decent bang for buck.

Thinking of buying the Fractal Design Node 804 Mini Case for a NAS. Since it can fit like 10 drives/

But I would love something with front panels so that I could have some hotswappables.
Any suggestions?

Yup, everything on that partition is perfectly intact and I can browse it from Ubuntu.

I recently built a brand new computer but would like to add the HDD from my old one to my new rig as basic storage, however I want to wipe it down using Dban. Should I wipe it first from USB and then add it to my new rig or connect it to the new build and then delete it?

Once I've done that do I need to do anything else to be able to use it? I've never installed a second HDD, only used one and I know how to do that.

I have an i7 2600k and two GTX 680s (4gb). Which should I upgrade?

Which gpu should I choose if I want to use it for engineering work? AMD or NVIDIA?
I probably will use CAD for most of things.
Or it's not really different, if I choose either of those?

Try
sudo update-grub
in a terminal then reboot.

If not, try fully updating Ubuntu and then try that again.

My case came with a fan in the front that has three pin female plug plugged into a two pin male plug attached to a male and a female power plug. Do I separate it and hook it up to my mobo 4-pin chassis fan connector or the three pin power fan connector or just attach a power plug to it direct from the PSU?

For a NAS 2 ssds on raid 0
and 10 hdds on raid 50/56

>>52149780
yes
most GPU's output in both digital and analogue from the DVI ports
>>
>>52149780
1) yes
2) some of those prongs indicate that they're DVI-D, DVI-A, DVI-I, or whatever the variations on DVI are. without getting into it too much, certain variations support sending an analog signal which allows cables like the middle one to work.

So, my sources.list file is gone

A guide told me that
sudo apt-get update

would just re-download the file but it still isn't there.

the monitor doesn't offer it, the card doesn't seem to either. i figure he could throw everything away or make the best of a bad situation.

the 960 is a garbage card the 950 is a better 2gb card and use the extra money to get a quad core

Some times when I reload the page it'll look like this. How do I fix this?
>>
Hi /g/, so I made a rookie mistake. I was running out of space for my PC that I built last December, so I ordered a 3tb WD black. When I went to put it in I realized my mobo only had slots for 2 Sata data transfer cables. I already have a 1tb hdd and a SSD in there. I found a couple of SATA splitters on amazon, but they look like they're only for power and not for data transfer. Are there splitter cables for this type of thing?

Seems like CSS isn't loading. Have you testing your extensions? That's what usually causes the issue.
>>
I made my windows 7 a fat32,explain too me like im a fucking idiot, how do I fix this mess. or better then that do you have a windows 7 iso file, link I can read this on linux.
>>
>>52150297
There are no SATA splitters. You'll need another controller of some sort, such as a PCIe card.
>>
while we're being silly

if you use connect 2 outputs from a GPU (say, HDMI and DVI) to teh same monitor, will the computer recognise it as 2 screens?
Switching the input source on the monitor will switch between the 2?

I can't think of a good reason for doing it, I'd just like to know what happens
>>
>>52150227
Honestly man, it looks good. You only have an i5, so I doubt you would need a cpu cooler, especially if you don't plan to overclock, but I have one on mine. Don't pay $90 for it, look around on New Egg, I know they have refurbished ones for cheaper. Everything else looks like a pretty standard first PC build.
