is it worth buying used network switches(1U 48 port 100mbit/gbit), servers(dual quad core xeons or opterons, 64gb ram, caddies included, etc...), etc... refurbished from places like ebay?

what do you think /g/?

pic unrelated

refurbished server equipment is okay, just make sure the seller is legit

it's fine, but what would you buy it for apart from a server?

Especially since rack servers are crazy loud.

And for value you only end up with outdated chips you can't OC anyway.

Only if I was super poor I would get a rack server, put it somewhere where it's least annoying and run USB and HDMI over ethernet to it or something.

As a home server, it's obviously a good choice since you get ECC RAM and all the good stuff. I'm using a low power L5640 (32nm, 6 cores, 12 threads) myself. It can even transcode multiple HEVC files in Plex while running 8 VMs with all kinds of servers. It would still be quite the crappy desktop computer.

I wouldn't buy 10/100 switches anymore.

if you actually serve applicantions that can utilize the multiple threads the xeons can be a good buy.

If not, you'd probably be better off with a faster, modern dual core w/HT or quad core.

The amount of money you will spend on power and cooling makes buying old server equipment not worth it if you plan on running the hardware 24/7.

>you
>knowing shit about servers

are you implying here that Windows Server 2012 R2 DS isn't the industry standard?

Why do you talk shit about an OS that you obviously haven't even tried and heard very little about apparently?

>inb4 it's only for AD when actually you only need one DC plus replication servers

Yea you want to atleast go for E3 series xeon if buying used because way less power usage.

Actually that's complete bullshit. Assuming you don't need the extra processing power you are better off with a low power Xeon on literally ANY architecture. The per core TDP didn't change much at all, it even went up and down a little through the ages.

Have a look:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Xeon_microprocessors

A low power Xeon of any generation will still use less power than even Skylake Xeons.
That being said, you obviously won't be happy with an Allendale Xeon, since the new chips are obviously more efficient. The question is just whether you need the extra processing power as well?

And yes the ultra low power Skylake CPUs like the E3-1235L V5 are amazing but they are also like a 1000$, probably.
Anyhow your statement to get any E3 to safe power is still bullshit, as earlier low power chips like the Xeon L5630 at just 40W with decent performance will still be better for your wallet than a Xeon E3-1280 v3 at 80W in the long run obviously.

TDP doesn't mean watt usage

E3 series have low power cpus aswell v1-2.
No one forces you to buy skylake series of xeon 1st-2nd gen E3- are fine too.
