Why yes I have a question.
I'm in college right now and was thinking of getting a Red Hat Certified Sys Admin so I can get a first job, but on the recommendations page, it says it's recommended for sysadmins who have 1-3 years of experience, is this one not entry level enough for me? Is there a better option? Also, are the classes required or can I study for this on my own? Is there any way of knowing if I'm good enough?

I look at the recommended skills and it's mostly shit I can do like:

>>51656324
>>51656335
When I completed 4 years of vocational education I earned like 15 of them in a year using just the dumps. I'm holding several MCITP, MSCA, MCSE, CCNA, CCNP and LPIC-2 titles just by memorising some stupid questions. I got really sick of it and did a bachelors, a real degree. Then the same thing happened. Earned 5 more, got sick of and now finishing my masters. No more useless certs for me.

They're just a stupid tool for companies to get money, and HR monkeys to select people who are good at memorising stuff. Being good in IT is not measured by the amount of certifications, not by a long shot.

>Degrees/Certs

My career plan:
- Get promoted during next promo cycle (end of next quarter)
- Switch teams and ladders, moving to the SF office and switching to "SWE" (Software Engineering). The ops side of SRE is interesting, but not what I really want to do, and oncall can be quite stressful when a serious issue comes up.
- Continue working and saving while also making progress on the company I'm starting with a friend of mine.
- If it takes off, quit and dedicate my full time to the new company, then eventually step back and work on other projects.
- If it doesn't take off, leave Google for a higher-impact position at another company, potentially returning to Google later for more money and/or a more interesting position.
- Continue working while trying to launch a different idea.

>There is not an international association
This is but one piece of the puzzle that's missing. Companies providing tech certs should incorporate more hands on labs during exams, drop multiple choice questions, replace them with open ones, preferably written exams, and graded by a real trainer/teacher, who needs to send the exams to an independent body or association that checks for fraud and such.

So yes, much like a school. In fact, nothing beats a degree from a good university. But to actually do all this, that's waaaay too expensive for companies to keep pushing for certs, both to provide them, as well as to require them for a job.

>it's your fault for choosing joke certs. Now saying certs are useless because you've done a few joke ones is just spreading desinfo.
The way certs are handled now, exam question open for everyone to see, and the companies not doing anything about, is nothing short of a joke.

>Also:
>>is doing a masters
>>thinks he can say what is and isn't a joke
Cheating is wrong, but nobody's stopping anyone so everyone does. That's hilarious. Doesn't take a masters degree to figure that out.

Also, does MS do 401k matching, and how is the stock plan? I sold about $30k from my Google stock a few days ago, which was pretty fun.
>>
>>51656850
yeah that's why once I have to give up my office I may as well give in. bummer this is the work place of the future...

as of jan 1st MSFT matches 50% of IRA max contribution, so next year they'll match up to $9k. that is a change from the previous "50% of 6% of your salary". I believe it's now the same as Google?

ESPP is 10% discount from market rate up to 15% of salary. It's decent. I am a pussy and sell all of mine immediately and invest in index funds. At my level most bonuses are made up of cash so I don't futz a ton with MSFT stock, I think that changes in the higher bands.

Most people don't realize a home in Seattle/Redmond area is expensive because they're developing cities. Which means major companies like Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks, and Expedia are based in this area which drives real estate prices way the fuck up.

Definitely. Which is sad, but it's true nonetheless. Take it from an LPIC-2 holder. RHCSA is easy peasy judging from the course material, but at least it's hands on labs, so you need to know what you're doing. LPIC is just studying a brain dump.

>They do, all of them. Every fucking time. It's a sick joke, the whole system.

true but only the entry levels certs. Good luck getting CCIE for example.

There are some very, very few exceptions. They're far outnumber by the vast majority however. Certs like the CCIE are the exception because they're not just multiple choice questions you memorise. Yet you can still easily earn all the certs below studying just brain dumps and some helpful tips online.

Also, ever wondered why there are so few CCIE holders?
>>
>>51658479
that is my point.

>>51658444
yep thats why CCIE is very valuable. there are so many people who sits only for the written CCIE exam and they say they are CCIE.

The CCIE cert is not cheap/affordable by most run of the mill network engineers and admins by any means and on top of that, you can only take it in very specific datacenters (where they lock you for six hours)

Should I try to learn again or just give up?

I'm also in TX. Did you start at a data center? How'd you get the initial experience?
